A standard Blu-ray rip usually occupies about 25–50 GB, while a 4K UHD HDR rip commonly needs 50–100 GB when you keep the original video and audio streams. Those are planning ranges, not format limits: runtime, studio bitrate, selected playlist, audio tracks, subtitles and extras can move a file far below or above a midpoint.

UHD ripping also has a hardware requirement that ordinary Blu-ray ripping does not. You need a BDXL-capable optical drive with LibreDrive support for UHD discs. Once the disc is read, MakeMKV can create a fast, lossless remux; HandBrake can make a smaller, newly encoded file when storage or playback compatibility matters more than preserving the source bit-for-bit.

What changes between a Blu-ray rip and a 4K UHD rip?

The difference is not simply that one file has more pixels. A UHD disc is authored around a newer video, color and HDR chain, and the rip preserves whatever that disc actually contains. A standard Blu-ray generally carries 1080p video using older-generation codecs with SDR and BT.709 signaling. UHD Blu-ray uses 3840×2160 video, HEVC Main 10 compression, 10-bit precision, BT.2020 color signaling and HDR support. Supported releases can also carry Dolby Vision or HDR10+ metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That technical advantage does not guarantee that every UHD release looks better. A disc can use an upscale, an inferior master or an authoring choice that limits the benefit of the extra resolution. Conversely, a well-mastered 1080p Blu-ray can look excellent on a calibrated display. Compare the actual transfer, not only the label on the case.

Disc capacity versus the size of the file you keep

Physical disc capacity sets an upper bound, but it is not a prediction of the MKV you will create. A full-disc backup can approach the disc’s capacity because it retains menus, extras, multiple playlists and duplicate assets. Selecting only the feature playlist removes much of that material. Re-encoding that feature reduces it further, but introduces a new compression decision.

Standard Blu-ray, single-layer 25 GB Disc capacity documented by the Blu-ray Disc Association in 2015.
Standard Blu-ray, dual-layer 50 GB Disc capacity documented by the Blu-ray Disc Association in 2015.

UHD Blu-ray, triple-layer 100 GB UHD capacity explicitly documented by the Blu-ray Disc Association in 2015.
Typical standard Blu-ray main-feature rip About 25–50 GB Practical planning range; title length, bitrate, audio and playlist selection determine the result.
Typical 4K HDR main-feature rip About 50–100 GB Observed practical range reported by Spatacoli in 2025, not a guaranteed format value.

A useful storage rule is to budget roughly twice as much space for many UHD remuxes as for comparable Blu-ray remuxes, then add headroom for multiple audio tracks, subtitles, extras and backups. Do not apply that ratio to every title: a short film with one audio track may be smaller than a long standard Blu-ray with several lossless tracks, and authoring choices vary by studio.

Why two discs with the same label produce different files

  • Runtime: A three-hour feature has more encoded frames than a 90-minute feature.
  • Video bitrate: The studio may allocate more or less of the available disc bandwidth to the feature.
  • Audio: Lossless multichannel tracks consume substantially more space than a single compressed stereo track.
  • Extras: Commentaries, alternate cuts, trailers and deleted scenes remain if you select them.
  • Playlist selection: Some discs contain duplicate or branched playlists; choosing the correct feature playlist avoids retaining unnecessary material.
  • Disc structure: A complete backup preserves menus and navigation assets that a feature-only MKV does not.

Planning storage for a library

Use the observed ranges as a budgeting tool rather than a promise. At 50 GB per standard Blu-ray title, 20 titles would require about 1,000 GB before filesystem overhead, artwork, backups or failed encodes. At 100 GB per UHD title, 20 titles would require about 2,000 GB under the same assumptions. If you keep both a remux and an encoded copy, count both files; if you delete the remux after verifying the encode, your long-term requirement is lower but you lose the untouched source for future work.

Quality: what a remux preserves and an encode changes

Video resolution, color and HDR

A MakeMKV remux copies the selected streams into an MKV container without re-encoding the video. The UHD stream remains 3840×2160, HEVC Main 10, 10-bit and BT.2020-signaled, with HDR metadata where the release provides it. A standard Blu-ray remux retains its original 1080p stream and SDR/BT.709 signaling. The container change does not improve or degrade the encoded pixels; it mainly changes how they are packaged and what optional tracks you keep.

UHD authoring targets allow high bitrates. Dolby Laboratories’ 2018 authoring guidance describes total UHD Blu-ray bitrates of 50 Mbps or 100 Mbps depending on the target and explains allocation of Dolby Vision enhancement data. The Blu-ray Disc Association lists UHD stream maxima of 108 Mbps for 66 GB discs and 128 Mbps for 100 GB discs. These are limits or authoring targets, not the measured bitrate of every title, so they should not be used to predict a specific file size.

HDR formats and playback behavior

HDR10 is part of the normal UHD ecosystem, while Dolby Vision or HDR10+ appears only on releases authored with those systems and requires a compatible playback chain. Keeping the remux preserves the metadata present on the disc. An encode can preserve HDR if your encoder settings and playback device support it, but an incompatible encode may trigger tone mapping, fall back to SDR or lose dynamic metadata. Check the capabilities of the television, receiver, media server and playback application before choosing a target format.

Audio and subtitles

Remuxing lets you retain the disc’s lossless audio, commentary tracks and subtitle streams. You can omit languages or commentary tracks to save space without changing the selected video. Encoding software can copy some audio streams while compressing others, but every additional choice affects compatibility and size. Decide which tracks you will actually use before starting a batch so you do not create large files full of unused data.

Hardware: what drive do you need?

For standard Blu-ray discs

A normal Blu-ray optical drive supported by your ripping software is generally sufficient for ordinary Blu-ray media. The drive must still be able to read the disc’s physical layer and your operating system must recognize it. A drive marketed only as a DVD reader cannot read Blu-ray media, and a damaged or region-restricted disc can fail even when the hardware is otherwise suitable.

For UHD Blu-ray discs

UHD ripping requires a BDXL-compatible drive with LibreDrive support. MakeMKV’s UHD FAQ describes this as the requirement and distinguishes drives sold as “official” UHD models from “friendly” models that can work with the appropriate LibreDrive support. An ASUS BW-16D1HT was an early drive reported to work, but the retail name alone is not enough: revisions and firmware matter.

  • Confirm the exact model number and hardware revision, not just the family name.
  • Check current LibreDrive support for that revision before buying.
  • Verify that the drive can read BDXL media, because UHD discs may use 66 GB or 100 GB layers.
  • Use a direct USB connection or an enclosure known to pass optical-drive commands reliably; some inexpensive adapters cause intermittent read failures.
  • Allow free space for the output. A temporary remux can require tens of gigabytes even when the final encoded file will be smaller.

A retail label that says “Blu-ray” does not prove UHD ripping compatibility. Conversely, a drive that reads UHD discs in a standalone player may still lack the computer-side LibreDrive support required by your software.

Protection, decryption and rights

Commercial discs can use AACS, and some Blu-ray titles also use BD+. UHD releases may use AACS 2.0 or 2.1 and, on some titles, bus encryption. MakeMKV documents these protection systems as part of its disc-reading workflow. The technical ability to process a protected disc is separate from whether doing so is lawful where you live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copyright exceptions and anti-circumvention rules differ by country and can change over time. Before copying a commercial disc, check the law that applies to your location and use. Do not treat ownership of a disc as a universal permission to bypass every technical protection, and do not distribute copies.

Step-by-step: make a feature remux with MakeMKV

  1. Prepare the workspace. Install a current version of MakeMKV, connect the supported optical drive and create a destination folder on storage with more free space than the expected output. For UHD, confirm that the drive is BDXL-capable and recognized as LibreDrive-compatible.
  2. Insert and open the disc. Launch MakeMKV and choose the optical drive. Let the application read the disc structure. Protected discs may take longer to enumerate than unprotected media.
  3. Identify the main playlist. Sort the listed titles by duration and inspect chapter counts and stream composition. The longest title is often the feature, but branched or duplicated playlists mean you should compare them rather than select by duration blindly.
  4. Select only what you need. Expand the feature title and keep the desired video, audio, subtitle and chapter streams. Deselect duplicate languages, commentary tracks or extras if your goal is a smaller feature-only file.
  5. Choose the output folder. Use a local drive with sufficient capacity and a stable filesystem. Avoid storing the only copy on the optical drive or a nearly full system partition.
  6. Start the MKV conversion. MakeMKV decrypts and remuxes the selected streams without an intermediate re-encode. The time is primarily limited by how quickly the drive can read the data and by your storage path.
  7. Verify before deleting anything. Open the MKV, check the beginning, middle and end, confirm audio language and subtitle behavior, and inspect HDR output on a capable display. Keep the disc until the file has passed these checks and any backup process has completed.

Step-by-step: decide whether to keep the remux or encode it

Keep the remux when fidelity is the priority

  • You want the original video bitstream, HDR signaling and lossless audio.
  • You may re-encode later as hardware and playback software improve.
  • Your storage system can absorb roughly 50–100 GB for many UHD titles.
  • You want a reference copy for checking a smaller encode.

A remux is usually the simplest archival master because it avoids a second generation of compression. Its trade-off is storage and network bandwidth: a high-bitrate file can exceed what a remote connection or modest media client can sustain.

Use HandBrake when space or compatibility matters

  • You need smaller files for a laptop, travel drive, cloud sync or limited NAS capacity.
  • Your playback clients handle a common encoded profile more reliably than a disc-native stream.
  • You are willing to spend encoding time and accept that the output cannot contain detail discarded by compression.

HandBrake’s documented settings are a compromise among image quality, online playback and file size. Choose the codec, bit depth, frame-rate handling, audio mode and subtitle treatment to match the devices that will play the file. HEVC can reduce size efficiently, but encoding speed and playback support depend on your CPU or GPU, the selected settings and the client; there is no single speed or quality result that applies to every system.

  1. Open the verified MKV as the source. Do not encode a file you have not checked for the correct playlist and tracks.
  2. Set the output dimensions deliberately. Preserve 3840×2160 if you need UHD resolution and your clients can decode it; downscale only when a 1080p target is an intentional storage or compatibility choice.
  3. Choose a quality target rather than a blind size target. A fixed quality setting generally adapts bitrate to scene complexity better than forcing every title into the same number of gigabytes.
  4. Configure HDR and 10-bit handling. Keep a 10-bit-capable path for HDR sources and confirm that the resulting metadata is recognized by your playback chain.
  5. Choose audio and subtitles. Copy a lossless track when your receiver and network can handle it, or select a compatible compressed track for smaller files. Burn subtitles only when a client cannot display selectable subtitle streams.
  6. Run a short test encode. Check dark scenes, film grain, fast motion, subtitles and audio synchronization before committing to a multi-hour encode.
  7. Encode, inspect and document. Record the source disc, playlist, encoder settings and retained tracks so the file can be reproduced or replaced later.

Remux versus encode: decision table

Decision axis MakeMKV remux HandBrake encode
Storage per title Often near the practical 25–50 GB Blu-ray or 50–100 GB UHD planning ranges, depending on selection. Usually smaller, but the result depends on codec, quality target, runtime and tracks.
Resolution, HDR and color depth Preserves the selected disc streams and available metadata. Can preserve or change them according to settings and client support; mistakes can reduce fidelity or alter HDR behavior.
Optical-drive requirement Requires the supported Blu-ray drive; UHD requires BDXL plus LibreDrive. Uses the already-created file, so no optical drive is needed during encoding.
Playback bandwidth Higher, because source bitrates and lossless audio remain. Lower when encoded to a smaller bitrate, improving streaming over constrained links.
Encode time and quality loss No video re-encode; creation is primarily disc-read and remux time. Requires a new encode; time varies by hardware and settings, and discarded information cannot be recovered.
Protection and rights Disc decryption may involve AACS, BD+, AACS 2.0/2.1 or bus encryption. The same rights limits apply to the source copy; encoding does not create a separate legal exemption.

Troubleshooting common failures

The UHD disc is not recognized

Check the drive’s exact revision, BDXL capability and LibreDrive status first. A drive sold as a conventional Blu-ray reader may not expose the features required for UHD. Update only with firmware known to support your model and verify that the operating system sees the drive before blaming the disc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MakeMKV lists many similar titles

Compare duration, chapter structure, video dimensions and audio tracks. Branched playlists can make the longest entry a poor choice. Preview the beginning and end of a candidate title and retain the disc until the complete file has been checked.

The output is unexpectedly large

Look for selected extras, duplicate playlists, multiple lossless audio tracks and commentary streams. A full-disc backup is expected to approach the media capacity; a feature-only remux should omit material you did not intend to keep, but a long feature with several tracks can still be very large.

HDR looks wrong after encoding

Confirm that the source contains HDR metadata, that the encode retained a 10-bit HDR-capable path and that the playback device supports the resulting format. If the client cannot interpret the metadata, use a compatible encode or allow controlled tone mapping rather than assuming the UHD source itself is defective.

Playback stutters or loses audio

Test the original remux locally to separate source problems from network or client limits. If the remux plays locally but not over the network, reduce bitrate with an encode, use a wired connection or choose a client that supports the source codec and audio format. Check subtitles and audio track selection separately before re-encoding.

How to choose storage and a workflow

Archival library

Keep the remux, retain the original disc, and maintain a second copy on another drive or NAS when the title is difficult to replace. This approach maximizes future flexibility but demands the most capacity and backup discipline.

Streaming-first library

Keep one verified remux as a temporary source, create a HandBrake encode sized for your clients, then decide whether the source remains part of your backup policy. Measure available network throughput and client decoding support before encoding an entire collection.

Mixed library

Use remuxes for favorite UHD titles, films with difficult HDR or audio requirements, and material you may re-edit. Encode frequently watched or long titles when the network and storage savings justify the additional processing. Name files with resolution, HDR format, audio languages and cut information so clients do not select an unintended version.

Bottom line

Choose a standard Blu-ray rip when 1080p SDR quality and lower storage are sufficient; choose a UHD rip when the specific release offers a better master and your display and playback chain can use its 4K, 10-bit, BT.2020 and HDR features. For UHD, buy or reuse only a drive confirmed to be BDXL-compatible with LibreDrive. MakeMKV is the preservation path: it produces a quick remux with the disc’s original streams. HandBrake is the optimization path: it trades encoding time and some source fidelity for smaller files and easier streaming. Budget storage from the practical ranges, verify the exact playlist and tracks, and keep your copying within the copyright and anti-circumvention rules that apply in your country.
