If you need a player, buying one now can make sense—but “they’re never going to be cheap again” goes further than the evidence. Panasonic’s US store currently lists several 4K Blu-ray players from $209.99 to $649.99, and a September 2026 report says the company recently raised advertised prices for its North American 4K range. Neither establishes a permanent price floor or rules out future sales. The right move depends on which discs and features you need, not on assuming every player will keep getting more expensive.
What current prices actually show
Panasonic’s US manufacturer-store listings, captured on 7 October 2026, include these selected 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players:
| Model | Listed US price | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
| DP-UB150 | $209.99 | Listed as a 4K player in Panasonic’s collection. |
| DP-UB450P | $299.99 | Listed as a 4K player in Panasonic’s collection. |
| DP-UB420 | $369.99 | Listed as a 4K player in Panasonic’s collection. |
| DP-UB820 | $649.99 | Panasonic’s product page identifies Ultra HD Blu-ray and Dolby Vision playback. |
These are observed Panasonic US store prices, not a market-wide price floor or a promise of what a retailer will charge. The same collection lists standard Blu-ray/DVD players below $120, so “Blu-ray player” does not mean only a premium 4K model. Check the Panasonic US player collection for current listings; prices and availability can change.

Why waiting may not deliver the deal you remember
A 15 September 2026 report by Cord Cutters News says Panasonic raised advertised prices for its current North American 4K player range. That is evidence of a recent increase for this manufacturer’s 4K models, not proof that every brand or standard Blu-ray/DVD player has gone up, or that prices will keep rising.

There is no verified market-wide historical price series here to show how far prices have moved over time, and a current store listing cannot predict future retailer discounts, promotions, supply changes, or price cuts. A sale may still appear. If you can wait without losing access to a player you need, waiting for a price you consider worthwhile is a reasonable choice; if you need one now, buy based on today’s value rather than treating a future discount as guaranteed.
Do you need a 4K Blu-ray player?
Match the player to your discs
Start with your collection. If you watch DVDs and standard Blu-rays, verify support for those formats and do not pay extra for Ultra HD playback unless you expect to use it. If you own Ultra HD Blu-ray discs—or plan to buy them—choose a player that explicitly supports that format. Do not assume every device called a Blu-ray player reads every kind of Blu-ray disc.

- Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
Check HDR against your TV and discs
HDR support matters only when the player, television, and disc share a format you want to use. For example, Panasonic identifies Dolby Vision support on the DP-UB820 product page. Check the specification for the exact model you are considering; do not infer that all 4K players support Dolby Vision or HDR10+.
Account for the rest of your setup
Before choosing between a lower-cost and premium model, check the output and audio connections against your TV or receiver, and decide whether network or streaming features matter to you. Compare the features you will use, not just the model names or the fact that both players support 4K discs. A higher price does not make a premium player necessary for a setup that cannot use its additional capabilities.

How to make the buy-now-or-wait decision
- List the formats you need. Note whether you watch DVDs, standard Blu-rays, Ultra HD Blu-rays, or a mix. Confirm that the model supports each format.
- Check HDR and connections. Match supported HDR formats and the player’s output/audio connections to your television and receiver.
- Separate disc playback from streaming. Treat apps and online services as model-specific extras, not as a substitute for checking disc support. Sony’s UK notice concerns loss of streaming-service access on certain specified older players from 16 September 2025; it does not say those players stopped playing discs. See Sony’s UK support notice for the affected products and details. It should not be generalized to other models, regions, or brands.
- Compare the actual terms before paying. Check the current seller, stock, price, warranty, and return window immediately before purchase. A manufacturer listing is a useful reference point, not proof that it is the best available offer.
- Set a personal threshold. If today’s price is acceptable for the features you will use and you need the player, buying now avoids relying on a sale that may not happen on your schedule. If the price is too high and your current setup works, waiting is a sensible gamble—not a guarantee of a lower price.
The practical answer
Buy now if you need a player and can find a model that fits your disc collection, TV or receiver, and budget at a price you accept. Keep waiting if you do not need one yet and would rather take the chance that a retailer offers a discount. Panasonic’s recent advertised-price increase is a reason not to assume earlier deals will return unchanged, but it does not prove Blu-ray players can never be cheap again.
