Start with Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) if you want the clearest introduction to Bloober Team’s modern psychological horror. Its story-led structure, over-the-shoulder presentation, expanded exploration, revised combat and new cut-scenes make it the strongest all-around first game.
Choose Cronos: The New Dawn instead when your priority is survival-horror combat, resource pressure and an original science-fiction setting. The rest of Bloober’s catalog is worth approaching by mood and play style rather than by release order.
The short answer
For most newcomers, play Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) first. Konami identifies Bloober Team as the developer and lists the remake for PlayStation 5 and PC through Steam. The game modernizes the presentation without abandoning its psychological-horror focus: exploration is broader, the camera is over the shoulder, combat has been revised and new cut-scenes have been added.
Cronos: The New Dawn is the better first choice for a player who wants a game built around survival systems rather than primarily around atmosphere and investigation. Bloober describes it as an original survival-horror property that moves between a post-apocalyptic future and 1980s Poland. It launched globally on September 5, 2025, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2; early access began September 3.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There is no defensible one-to-six quality ranking for every Bloober horror game. The company’s official material does not provide a uniform review-score set across the catalog, so the useful question is which kind of horror you want to play.

Why Silent Hill 2 is the best first stop for most players
A focused psychological-horror identity
The remake is the easiest way to understand what Bloober does when it is working in a famous psychological-horror framework. The emphasis is on unease, interpretation and a story that rewards attention, rather than on constant enemy encounters. That makes it a strong introduction for someone who wants horror to be carried by place, character and uncertainty.
Modern presentation without a purely retro interface
The over-the-shoulder camera gives the remake a contemporary third-person feel. Expanded exploration lets the player examine more of the environment, while revised combat gives encounters a more active role than a purely observational horror game would. New cut-scenes add material for returning players and help newcomers follow the story.

Do not make it your first Bloober game if your main requirement is a new intellectual property, heavy resource management or a science-fiction setting. In that case, Cronos: The New Dawn is the more direct match. Likewise, players who strongly dislike combat may prefer Layers of Fear (2023), whose appeal is exploration and environmental storytelling.

When Cronos: The New Dawn is the better first game
It is built around survival pressure
Cronos is the choice for players who want horror to affect moment-to-moment decisions. Bloober’s description emphasizes survival-driven combat and grotesque enemies, so supplies, encounters and the cost of mistakes matter more than they do in an exploration-first title.
Its setting is original and deliberately split in time
The game combines a post-apocalyptic future with 1980s Poland. Locations named in the official material include Islands in the Mist and the Hospital. That combination gives it a different identity from the licensed or partner properties in Bloober’s portfolio. Bloober’s own positioning line is “Survive the nightmare of the future to save what remains of the past,” while its launch copy calls it “A new era of survival horror awaits.”
Availability and launch context
The global launch was September 5, 2025, with early access beginning September 3. Bloober Team’s investor-relations announcement reported 500,000 copies sold across PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Switch 2 by November 26, 2025. That is a dated sales milestone, not a review score or a guarantee of continuing availability.
A boxed PlayStation 5 and PC edition was announced for distribution by Bandai Namco Europe in designated regions. Physical stock and regional eligibility can change, so check the current retailer listing for the country in which you are buying.

The other Bloober games: what each one is for
Layers of Fear (2023): exploration and environmental unease
This is the consolidated modern Layers of Fear entry. Bloober’s homepage calls it the series’ “crowning work,” and the company lists the franchise among its core horror properties. Choose it when you want to move through disturbing environments, read the space for clues and absorb psychological storytelling without making combat the central reason to play.
It is a better fit than Silent Hill 2 for an exploration-first player, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding the remake. The games represent different properties and can be played independently.
The Medium: a third-person dual-world mystery
The Medium is a third-person psychological-horror game organized around a distinctive dual-world presentation. Its central appeal is seeing and interpreting two realities at once, which makes it the natural choice for a player who values supernatural investigation and visual contrast over a conventional survival-horror loop.
Pick it after Silent Hill 2 if you want to see another way Bloober uses third-person perspective. Pick it before the remake only when the parallel-world concept matters more to you than the remake’s combat and expanded exploration.

Observer: System Redux: cyberpunk investigation
Observer: System Redux is Bloober’s updated version of an award-winning dystopian thriller for next-generation hardware. Its identity is investigative and cyberpunk rather than rural, gothic or traditionally post-apocalyptic. The game belongs at the top of your list if you want a technologically saturated setting and psychological tension built around inquiry.
Blair Witch: licensed wilderness horror
Blair Witch applies Bloober’s horror approach to a licensed forest setting. The company presents its hook as “Evil hides in the woods.” It is the most direct choice for players who want found-footage atmosphere, wilderness isolation and the mythology associated with the Blair Witch license.
Because it is a licensed property rather than an original Bloober universe, it should be treated as a mood-specific selection, not as a required step toward the studio’s other games.
Layers of Fear 2: another standalone franchise chapter
Layers of Fear 2 is a separate chapter for players who already know they enjoy the franchise’s format. Start with the 2023 entry if you want the consolidated modern presentation; choose the second game when your priority is simply more Layers of Fear-style psychological exploration.

Which Bloober game should you play first by player type?
- Most newcomers: Begin with Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake). It gives you the broadest introduction to Bloober’s modern presentation and psychological-horror strengths.
- Survival-horror players: Begin with Cronos: The New Dawn. Its combat and resource pressure are the defining reasons to choose it.
- Exploration-first players: Begin with Layers of Fear (2023). Its environments and psychological storytelling carry more of the experience than fighting does.
- Players who want a supernatural mystery: Begin with The Medium. The dual-world structure is its distinctive feature.
- Cyberpunk fans: Begin with Observer: System Redux. It is the catalog’s clearest dystopian investigative option.
- Fans of licensed wilderness horror: Begin with Blair Witch. The forest setting and found-footage atmosphere are the point of entry.
Practical play-order options
A broad introduction to Bloober’s range
- Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake), to establish the studio’s modern psychological-horror approach.
- Cronos: The New Dawn, to move into original survival-horror combat and science fiction.
- Layers of Fear (2023), to experience exploration-led environmental horror.
- The Medium, to see the studio’s dual-world supernatural structure.
- Observer: System Redux, for its cyberpunk investigative tone.
- Blair Witch, for licensed wilderness horror.
- Layers of Fear 2, when you want a second trip through that franchise’s format.
A combat-first route
Play Cronos: The New Dawn first, then Silent Hill 2. This order moves from explicit survival pressure to a more interpretive psychological experience. Follow with The Medium if supernatural investigation appeals to you.
An atmosphere-first route
Start with Layers of Fear (2023), continue with Silent Hill 2, and then try Blair Witch for a wilderness variation. Add Layers of Fear 2 only if the first game’s exploration format worked for you.
What you do not need to play first
You do not need to complete Layers of Fear, The Medium, Observer: System Redux or Blair Witch before starting Silent Hill 2. They are separate Bloober properties or chapters with different settings and structures. Starting with one may help you recognize recurring interests—psychological tension, hostile environments and distorted realities—but none is presented as a required prequel.
The same applies in reverse: choosing Silent Hill 2 does not obligate you to follow a chronology before playing Cronos. The fit-based order is intentional because the catalog changes its horror mode, gameplay pressure, camera language and relationship to licensed material from game to game.
Final recommendation
Play Silent Hill 2 (2024 remake) first unless you already know that survival systems and original science fiction matter more to you than psychological storytelling. In that specific case, start with Cronos: The New Dawn. Treat Layers of Fear, The Medium, Observer: System Redux, Blair Witch and Layers of Fear 2 as targeted choices for exploration, supernatural mystery, cyberpunk investigation, licensed wilderness horror or another Layers chapter—not as homework before either modern starting point.
