There is no universal winner. Choose Blogger if you want a configurable, standalone blog with XML backup and import, plus the option to place ads subject to eligibility and policy rules. Choose Medium if you want to publish within its profile and publication ecosystem and may qualify for its engagement-based Partner Program. These recommendations follow the platforms’ documented features, not comparative hands-on testing.
How Blogger and Medium differ
Blogger is structured around a blog that you set up and configure. You name it, choose an available address, and can manage its design and who may read or edit it. Its settings also cover features such as search visibility, feeds, redirects, post labels, scheduling, and backup or import.
Medium is structured around stories on your profile, with the option to publish through publications. A story placed in a publication remains on your profile and credits you as its author. The story’s URL changes to include the publication name or domain, and Medium says it may appear in the feeds and digests of the author’s and publication’s followers. That is a distribution path, not a promise of a particular audience size.

Choose Blogger if you want to configure a blog
Blogger’s setup flow has you name a blog and select an available address. From there, its design and settings give you control over how the blog is presented and managed. You can, for example, set reader or author access, edit posts, use labels, schedule publication, and adjust search visibility or feeds.

For a custom domain, Blogger’s domain setup guide describes configuring CNAME records. It warns that redirects may take up to 24 hours. If your domain uses CAA records, the guide says they must allow Let’s Encrypt for Blogger to issue or renew an SSL certificate.
Blogger also supports exporting posts and comments in XML and importing XML content through its settings. That is a useful backup and portability option, but it does not mean a move to another platform will preserve formatting, links, or behavior exactly.

Choose Medium if you want its publication ecosystem
Medium’s publications provide a way to publish stories in a shared publication while retaining the story on your author profile and receiving credit. Medium documents distribution to the feeds and digests of the author’s followers and the publication’s followers. It does not establish how many readers a story will reach.

What to know about making money
Blogger: ads are possible, not automatic
Blogger documents displaying AdSense and other ads. AdSense approval and continued use depend on meeting its eligibility requirements and policies; having a Blogger site does not guarantee approval or earnings. Blogger also documents adding third-party ad code through layout tools and configuring ads.txt. See Blogger’s advertising guidance for the relevant options and requirements.
Medium: eligibility and earnings depend on current rules
Medium’s Partner Program eligibility page lists these requirements: an active Medium membership, at least one published story, a complete profile, being 18 or older, and residence and banking in a supported country. The supported-country list can change, so check Medium’s current eligibility requirements before planning around program income.
Eligible writers can choose to paywall individual stories. Earnings depend on member activity and other factors Medium describes, including reading or listening time, engagement, distribution, and discovery source. Medium’s Partner Program terms, effective June 1, 2026, say payment is based on performance factors and that Medium determines the portion of membership revenue. The model can change, so there is no fixed rate or guaranteed income to rely on.

Medium’s earnings calculation documentation says, “A read is counted when the reader has spent 30 seconds or more on your story.” That is a program metric, not a universal measure of readership or a promise of payment for every reader.
Can you move your blog later?
Blogger documents an XML route for backing up posts and comments and importing XML content. The documentation cited here does not establish that Medium offers an equivalent complete export of an entire account. Nor does Blogger’s XML feature guarantee a one-click transfer to Medium with identical layout, links, or functionality.
If long-term independence matters, consider both where your domain points and how you can retrieve your content. A custom domain can make an address less tied to a platform’s default URL, but it does not itself preserve your site or audience if you leave. Before committing, check the platform’s current export options and keep a separate copy of important content.
