Blog publishing software is a tool for creating, organizing, presenting, and publishing blog posts on the web. It is often a kind of content management system (CMS), though some products focus on blogging while others include blogging as one part of a broader website platform.

What does blog publishing software do?

It manages the work around online articles: an author drafts a post, adds a title and other content, organizes it, and publishes it so readers can access it. The software also determines how posts appear on the site.

A common blog layout presents a stream of posts, often with the newest first, and gives each post its own page. Categories and tags can help readers and authors organize posts; archives, feeds, and comments are also common, but they are not required features of every blog.

How is blogging software related to a CMS?

A content management system is a broader category of software for managing website content. Blogging software is commonly considered a specific type of CMS. WordPress.org puts it this way in its Introduction to Blogging documentation: “Many blogging software programs are considered a specific type of CMS.”

In practice, the terms can describe overlapping capabilities. A blog-focused tool centers on posts and their publishing workflow; a broader CMS or website platform may offer blogging alongside other kinds of pages and site features.

Which features are part of a blog publishing tool?

There is no single feature checklist that defines every product. Editing and publishing posts are central; other capabilities depend on the platform. For example, Squarespace documents blog landing pages and individual post pages, with categories, tags, social sharing, and optional paywalls. Wix documents composing posts with text and media, along with SEO settings, scheduling, categories, tags, and comment controls.

  • Writing and publishing: composing posts, managing drafts, and making posts public.
  • Organization and display: categories, tags, archives, feeds, and layouts for post collections and individual posts.
  • Additional publishing options: scheduling, SEO settings, social sharing, comments, memberships, or paid access, where offered.

These examples show possible features, not a universal standard or a claim that platforms provide equivalent tools. The current documentation is available from the Squarespace Help Center and the Wix Help Center.

How can blog publishing software be delivered?

It may be offered as a dedicated or self-managed system, or as a blogging feature within a hosted website service. Those are broad delivery patterns, not guarantees about how much control, maintenance, or technical work any particular product requires. Check the product’s own documentation to understand what it manages and what you would manage.

What should you look for in a blog publishing tool?

Start with your publishing workflow and the scope of site you need. Consider whether you need a particular editor, draft and scheduling controls, or mobile editing; how you want posts organized and displayed; and whether you need reader interaction, social sharing, memberships, or paid access. Then decide whether you want a blogging-focused system or blogging within a broader website platform, and verify the management responsibilities for the specific product.
