A blog hosting service stores a blog’s pages, posts, images, and other files on servers and delivers them to visitors online. A domain name is the blog’s address; hosting is where its content lives and how it is served. They work together, but they are separate services—even when one provider bundles them.
What does blog hosting do?
When someone opens a blog, the hosting service provides the server-side storage and delivery that makes its content available. That content can include published posts, images, and other site files. Without hosting or another way to serve the site online, visitors cannot access those files at the blog’s address. WordPress.com explains the distinction between a domain and website hosting.
How is hosting different from a domain name?
A domain name is the memorable address visitors enter or follow. Hosting stores and serves the blog’s content. Think of the domain as the address and hosting as the place and service that make the site’s content available. You may get both from one provider, but they remain different parts of a blog’s setup.
What is included in a blog hosting service?
Some platforms bundle hosting with a website builder and blogging tools, so you can create and publish posts as part of one service. Other arrangements separate hosting from the software or builder used to manage the blog. What is included depends on the provider and plan; the term “blog hosting” does not guarantee a particular set of tools or features. For context on how blogs and websites can be arranged, see WordPress.com’s guide to choosing a website, a blog, or both.

Hosting providers offer different models, including shared, VPS, cloud, and dedicated hosting. They can differ in the setup and maintenance expected of the blogger, the control and customization available, scalability, reliability, support, and total plan cost. There is no universally best model for every blog, and the names alone do not establish how a specific provider’s plan performs. Compare the actual plan details and responsibilities before choosing; Wix’s web hosting guide describes these hosting models.
