You can’t reliably confirm that someone has blocked your number from your side. Calls that go to voicemail and messages without delivery updates can raise the possibility, but the same signs can result from poor reception, a phone that is off, call filtering, or a messaging-service problem. Treat them as inconclusive—not as proof—and don’t use another number or hidden caller ID to test or bypass a possible block.
What the signs can—and cannot—tell you
Phones and messaging services generally do not give callers a dependable notice that a recipient has blocked them. Apple says that, in the Messages behavior it documents, a blocked sender is not told that their messages were blocked. Google’s Phone app documentation describes blocking as a control managed on the recipient’s device. Neither gives a caller access to someone else’s block list.
| What you notice | Other possible explanations | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Calls repeatedly go straight to voicemail | The recipient’s phone may be off or out of coverage, Do Not Disturb may be enabled, or call screening may silence unknown callers and send them to voicemail. Apple documents these call-screening options for iPhone. | It may be consistent with a block, but it does not prove one. There is no reliable universal rule that a particular ring count means you were blocked. |
| An iMessage has no “Delivered” status | The recipient may have connectivity issues or iMessage may be unavailable. Delivery indicators also vary across Android messaging apps and services. | A missing confirmation is inconclusive. |
| An iPhone message appears green rather than blue | Green means the message was sent as SMS rather than iMessage. The recipient may not use an iPhone, iMessage may be off, or there may be an iMessage issue. | Bubble color does not establish that you were blocked. |
| Texts fail when sent to one person | The number may be incorrect, the messaging route may be incompatible, or a service or device setting may be interfering. | A contact-specific failure does not reveal the recipient’s settings or intent. |
Call routing and message status depend on device settings, network conditions, carrier behavior, and the messaging service in use. Avoid treating any one clue—or a combination of clues—as a diagnostic test.

First check whether the problem is on your side
Separate a problem affecting one contact from a broader service issue. If calls or messages fail with multiple people, focus on your phone, messaging setup, or carrier before drawing conclusions about a particular recipient.

- Caller ID/Call Waiting
- 80-name/number Caller ID history
- 13-number memory
- Display dial
- Mute/flash.Last number redial.Ringer volume control.Desk/wall mountable.White
- Test your service with another willing contact. Try a normal call or text. Check your signal and data connection, and make sure Airplane Mode is off. If service fails broadly, the issue is less likely to be limited to one recipient.
- Check your own blocked list. You may have blocked the contact accidentally. On iPhone, Apple provides instructions for managing blocked contacts in Settings. In Google’s Phone app on Android, the phone owner can review the Blocked numbers list. Menu names and paths can vary by iOS version, Android manufacturer, and dialer app.
- Check the messaging route. If the conversation uses iMessage or RCS, verify that data works and the relevant service is enabled. A change between iPhone and Android can also affect which messaging service is trying to deliver the message.
- Consider other device or service issues. Storage limits, Wi-Fi or mobile-data problems, and messaging settings can affect delivery. Carrier troubleshooting guidance from Rogers and Verizon covers checks such as blocked lists, connectivity, and cross-platform messaging.
- Contact your carrier if the fault persists. If calls or texts fail for several contacts, or basic checks do not resolve the issue, ask your carrier to investigate possible account, network, or service problems.
Why platform behavior differs
iPhone calls and messages
Apple’s support information says blocked senders are not informed when their messages are blocked. Separately, iPhone call-screening features can silence unknown callers or send them to voicemail. A caller may therefore see behavior that resembles blocking even when call filtering is the explanation. Apple’s settings and menu labels can change between iOS releases.
Android calls
Google’s Phone app lets the phone owner manage blocked numbers; its documentation says calls from blocked numbers are declined. Android behavior is not identical on every device because manufacturers may use different dialer apps and menus. Google notes that some instructions require Android 6.0 or later.

SMS, iMessage, and RCS
These are different messaging routes, and their indicators are not interchangeable. On iPhone, blue bubbles indicate iMessage and green bubbles indicate SMS. SMS does not provide the same iMessage delivery status, and Android delivery indicators depend on the app and service. A status change or missing confirmation is not a way to inspect someone else’s block settings.

If you have a practical reason to contact the person, use an appropriate channel you already share and send one brief, non-pressuring message. Then give them space. Do not repeatedly call, conceal your caller ID, borrow another number, or create another account to get around a possible block. If the concern is instead that your own phone service is failing, troubleshoot your device or contact your carrier.
