Use your wallet app when you need to choose an account, connect to a decentralized application, sign a message, or authorize a transaction. Use a blockchain explorer when you need an independent view of what the network recorded: transaction status, confirmations, sender, recipient, value, fees, token transfers, contract calls, and block data. For dependable tracking, start in the wallet, copy the transaction hash, then verify it in the explorer for the network that carried the transaction.
The short answer: use both, for different jobs
A wallet app is the control panel for your crypto accounts. It presents balances, lets you switch accounts and networks, connects to decentralized applications, and uses your signing authority to approve transactions. It is where you normally decide what to do.
A blockchain explorer is a searchable window into a blockchain’s public record. It lets you look up a transaction hash, public address, block, token transfer, smart contract, gas details, and event logs without giving the explorer control of your funds. It is where you independently check what happened.
The distinction matters because the wallet interface is a convenience layer, not the ledger itself. Ethereum.org explains that “wallets are technically only an interface to show you your balance and to make transactions”; the account is recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the wallet application. Etherscan describes a block explorer as “a search engine for a blockchain.”

That leads to a practical rule:
- Need to act? Open the wallet app.
- Need to verify? Open the matching blockchain explorer.
- Need confidence after sending? Use the wallet for the initial transaction details and the explorer for independent confirmation.
What a wallet app actually does
It displays blockchain data in a usable interface
Your wallet retrieves balances and activity from the networks it supports, then presents them as accounts, tokens, collectibles, and transactions. The app may hide technical fields, group activity by token, or label an action in human terms such as “swap,” “approval,” or “send.” Those choices make routine use easier, but they also mean the screen is a filtered interpretation of the chain.
It provides access to signing authority
A wallet may hold encrypted key material locally, connect to an external signer, or coordinate with a hardware device. In every case, its important operational role is enabling you to sign a message or transaction for an account. A public address can be viewed by anyone; the private key or recovery phrase that authorizes spending must remain secret.
It is the normal place to initiate transactions
When you send tokens, approve a contract, bridge assets, mint an item, or interact with a decentralized application, the wallet presents the request and asks you to approve or reject it. A blockchain explorer generally does not need your wallet connection for browsing. Etherscan notes that a connection is needed only for certain actions, such as signing or sending a transaction through an integrated feature.

Wallet apps commonly offer filters for transaction type, token, and network. MetaMask, for example, documents searching its Activity view using those categories and opening an item for details. That is useful for finding your own recent actions, but the app can omit activity it does not index or classify. Internal transactions are a common example: MetaMask says they may not appear in its activity view and recommends checking a block explorer for them.
What a blockchain explorer adds
Independent lookup by hash or address
Paste a public transaction hash into the explorer for the network that processed it, or search a public address to review its recorded activity. You do not have to connect your wallet to perform those searches. Anyone who has the address or hash can inspect the same public ledger entries.
Network-level status and confirmations
An explorer shows whether a transaction is pending, confirmed, failed, or otherwise marked by that chain’s interface. It also shows the block in which a confirmed transaction was included and the number of subsequent confirmations when the explorer provides that count. A wallet may summarize this as “complete,” while the explorer exposes the underlying record.
More technical transaction details
Explorer pages commonly expose the sender and recipient, transferred amount, transaction fee, gas price or gas usage, nonce, input data, token transfers, contract address, event logs, and block metadata. Etherscan lists transaction, address, smart-contract, block, gas, and token-transfer inspection among its functions. These fields help distinguish a simple transfer from a contract call, identify an approval, and verify which token contract actually moved funds.

Visibility into activity a wallet may not show
Smart-contract interactions can create internal transfers or emit token events that are not represented cleanly in a wallet’s activity feed. An explorer indexes the chain’s public records and can show those internal movements, logs, and related calls. That is why an explorer is the better place to investigate a balance change that the wallet cannot explain.
Wallet app or explorer? Choose by the job

How to check whether a crypto transaction went through
Use this procedure whenever a transfer is delayed, a recipient cannot see funds, or you want a record independent of the wallet screen.
- Open the wallet’s activity view. Select the account and network used for the transaction. Open the specific send, swap, approval, or contract interaction.
- Copy the transaction hash. A hash is the transaction’s public identifier. If the wallet does not expose it, copy the sending address and use the address search instead.
- Confirm the network. Note whether the wallet says Ethereum, Base, BSC, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Optimism, Solana, or another network. The same address format can appear on multiple chains, but the transaction exists only on the chain that processed it.
- Open the corresponding explorer. MetaMask documents using a separate explorer for networks such as Ethereum, BSC, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, and Optimism. Select the explorer associated with the wallet’s currently selected network.
- Paste the hash or public address. Search the hash first when you have it; it takes you directly to the transaction. Address search is useful for a broader activity view or when the wallet did not provide a hash.
- Read the status and block information. Look for a confirmed or successful result, a failed result, or a pending state. For a confirmed transaction, note the block number and any confirmation count shown by the explorer.
- Verify the parties and amount. Check the sender, recipient, native-coin value, token transfers, and token contract address. For a contract call, inspect the method and event logs rather than relying only on the top-line label.
- Check the fee separately from the amount sent. The fee is paid to process the transaction and may be shown in the chain’s native asset. A recipient’s received amount and the sender’s total debit can therefore differ.
- Compare the explorer record with the wallet. If the records agree on network, hash, status, recipient, and value, the transaction has an independent confirmation. If they do not, use the troubleshooting section below before concluding that funds are missing.
How to choose the correct explorer
Match the chain, not just the address
Explorers are chain-specific. A transaction sent on BSC will not appear in Ethereum’s explorer, and a Solana transaction requires a Solana-compatible explorer. MetaMask’s documentation explains that the explorer name changes with the selected network and lists network-specific examples.
When a wallet offers several networks, record the network at the moment you send. Do not assume that an Ethereum-looking address means the transaction occurred on Ethereum. Many networks use compatible address formats, while maintaining separate ledgers and explorers.
Use the explorer linked from the network’s documentation or wallet
For a supported network, use the explorer identified by the wallet’s network settings or the network’s official documentation. Avoid random search results that imitate an explorer or ask for a recovery phrase. Browsing a transaction should require only a public hash or address.
For multi-chain monitoring, keep a chain label with every record
If you track several networks, write down the chain beside each address and transaction hash. The same address can have different balances and activity histories on different networks. A spreadsheet or dashboard that omits the chain can make unrelated records look contradictory.
Why the wallet balance and explorer balance can differ
A mismatch is usually an indexing, network, visibility, or interpretation issue rather than proof that the blockchain lost funds. Check these causes in order.

The wallet and explorer are on different networks
First compare the selected network in the wallet with the explorer’s network. Search the same address on the correct chain. A balance on Polygon will not appear in an Ethereum account view, even when the public address is identical.

The token is hidden or not recognized by the wallet
An explorer may show a token transfer that the wallet does not display because the asset is not enabled, the token contract has not been added, or the wallet’s token metadata is incomplete. Verify the token contract address and import or enable the asset using a trusted source for that network. Do not add a token solely because a message or unsolicited website instructs you to do so.
The wallet has not refreshed its index
Wallet interfaces can lag behind the chain or temporarily fail to load an activity feed. Refresh the wallet, confirm that the account is correct, and check the explorer directly. The explorer’s record is the independent reference for whether the transaction was included.
The activity is an internal transaction or contract event
A contract can move assets internally or emit token events without creating the simple transfer row a wallet expects. MetaMask specifically notes that internal transactions may not appear in its activity view. Inspect the explorer’s internal-transfer, token-transfer, and event-log sections.
The transaction failed or was replaced
A failed transaction can consume a fee without producing the intended transfer. A pending transaction can also be replaced or superseded under some network rules. Read the explorer’s status, error indication, nonce, and block inclusion rather than treating a wallet notification alone as proof of settlement.

The wallet is showing a portfolio estimate
Some wallet screens combine balances from several networks or display fiat estimates. Compare the underlying token quantity and chain first; price data and portfolio aggregation can change independently of the ledger.
What to inspect on an explorer transaction page
Status and confirmation state
Start with the status indicator and block inclusion. “Pending” means the network has not yet recorded final inclusion in the way the explorer reports it. “Success” or an equivalent label means the transaction executed according to the chain’s result. “Failed” means the attempted execution did not complete as intended, even though a fee may still have been charged.

From, to, and value
Confirm that the sender is the address you control, the recipient is the intended address or contract, and the value is the expected native-asset amount. For token transfers, use the token-transfer section because the top-level native value can be zero during a contract interaction.
Fees and gas
Review the fee, gas limit or gas used, and gas price fields where available. A transaction can fail because execution ran out of gas or because a contract rejected the requested action; the explorer’s error and log information provides more context than a generic wallet alert.

Check the contract address for the token, especially when similarly named assets exist. Event logs can show approvals, transfers, swaps, minting, burning, and other contract-level actions. They are the most precise way to determine what a successful contract call actually emitted.
Block and timestamp information
The block number and timestamp establish when the explorer recorded the transaction. These fields are useful when reconciling exchange deposits, payroll, merchant payments, or a multi-step bridge where later actions depend on an earlier confirmation.

Sending or receiving funds
Use the wallet to select the account, enter the recipient, choose the network and asset, review the fee, and approve the transaction. The explorer cannot replace the wallet’s signing step.
Connecting to a decentralized application
The wallet displays the site’s request and lets you approve, reject, or disconnect. Read the requested network, contract, amount, and permissions before signing. Use the explorer afterward to inspect the resulting transaction or approval.

A wallet’s filters are faster when you remember only that you swapped a token or sent funds last week. Search by transaction type, token, or network, then open the item to obtain the hash for deeper verification.

Managing signing permissions
Account switching, message signing, transaction simulation where supported, and hardware-signer prompts belong in the wallet workflow. An explorer can show what was recorded, but it should not be treated as a replacement for the wallet’s security checks.
When an explorer is the better tool
Verifying a payment with a hash
If a recipient says a payment did not arrive, ask for the transaction hash or provide yours. Search it on the correct chain and compare the recipient address, token contract, amount, status, and block. This avoids relying on screenshots or a wallet’s simplified label.
Auditing an address
Search the public address to review incoming and outgoing transfers, contract interactions, token holdings, and historical blocks. Remember that an address is public and pseudonymous, not automatically proof of a person’s identity.
Investigating an unexplained balance change
Use token-transfer, internal-transfer, and event-log views to find movements that the wallet grouped, hid, or failed to label. Compare the transaction’s contract and recipient with the action you expected.
Reading contract and gas information
Developers, analysts, and advanced users need the explorer’s ABI or verified-contract view, call data, logs, block details, and gas fields. A wallet may show only a friendly description and the final amount.
Security rules for using either tool
- Never enter a seed phrase or private key into an explorer. Etherscan states that it is not a wallet service provider, does not store private keys, and has no control over transactions on the Ethereum network.
- Browsing does not require a wallet connection. A public address or transaction hash is sufficient for ordinary lookup. Treat a request to connect or sign merely to view a transaction as suspicious.
- Verify the network and domain before acting. A look-alike explorer can display a convincing page and then request a malicious signature.
- Use public addresses and hashes carefully. They do not authorize spending, but they reveal financial activity that may be linkable to you.
- Do not confuse a successful transaction with a safe transaction. A contract call can execute successfully while granting an unwanted allowance or sending assets to an unintended address. Inspect the recipient, contract, method, and logs.
- Keep a record of the chain. Store the network name beside every hash and address so that later checks go to the correct explorer.
Tracking addresses manually or automatically
Manual tracking for occasional checks
For a few accounts, bookmark the correct explorer for each network, label your addresses, and search the public address when you need a current ledger view. Use transaction hashes for individual payments and retain the hash with your receipt or accounting record.
Automated monitoring for technical users
Etherscan documents an API and analytics platform that supports more than 60 chains through a unified system. That can support automated address portfolios, transfer alerts, reconciliation jobs, or internal dashboards. The ordinary web explorer remains sufficient for one-off checks; automation introduces API credentials, rate limits, error handling, and data-normalization work that a casual user does not need.
An automated system should store at least the chain identifier, address, transaction hash, block number, status, token contract, raw amount, and timestamp. Keeping the raw identifiers lets you return to the explorer when a parser or portfolio display is incomplete.

A compact decision checklist
- Are you about to sign, send, approve, or connect? Use the wallet.
- Do you have a hash and want an independent result? Use the matching explorer.
- Do you have only an address? Search that public address on the correct chain.
- Does the wallet omit a transfer? Inspect internal transactions, token transfers, and logs in the explorer.
- Do the records disagree? Check network, account, token contract, indexing delay, and transaction status before troubleshooting anything else.
- Is any site asking for your seed phrase or private key? Stop; neither is needed to browse a public ledger.
Bottom line for everyday crypto tracking
A wallet app is for control and action; a blockchain explorer is for independent evidence. Start with the wallet because it knows which account and network you used, then copy the transaction hash and verify the public record in the explorer for that chain. When the wallet view is incomplete, the explorer’s transaction, token, contract, block, and log data is the authoritative place to investigate what the network recorded.
