Blind-spot monitoring is a driver-assistance feature that detects vehicles in adjacent areas that can be hard to see and alerts the driver. It can help flag a possible hazard, but it does not confirm that a lane change is safe or replace checking mirrors and looking around the vehicle.
What blind-spot monitoring means
Blind-spot monitoring—also called blind-spot warning or, by some automakers, blind-spot information—uses sensors to watch areas beside or behind a vehicle that may not be readily visible to the driver. When the system detects a vehicle in a monitored area, it gives a warning intended to help the driver avoid changing lanes into it. NHTSA describes the feature as a warning about a vehicle in an adjacent lane that may not be visible when changing lanes.
How the system works
The vehicle’s sensors monitor a defined area and send information to a warning display or alert. The exact sensor arrangement, coverage and warning behavior depend on the vehicle.

Detection technology varies
For example, Ford describes a BLIS implementation using two multiple-beam radars in the rear quarter panels. A light in the side mirror alerts the driver when the system detects a vehicle. That is one manufacturer’s design, not a universal layout. Ford’s BLIS description says this system detects vehicles, not pedestrians or other objects.

Warnings can use lights and sounds
In the 2017 Honda Odyssey BSI system, the indicator remains lit when a vehicle is detected, and it blinks with a beep if the driver signals toward a detected vehicle. That system operates at 20 mph (32 km/h) or higher. These details apply to that model year, not to blind-spot systems generally. Honda’s 2017 Odyssey owner manual describes the system’s operation.
Blind-spot warning is not the same as intervention
A warning system alerts the driver; it does not necessarily brake or steer. NHTSA distinguishes blind-spot warning from blind-spot intervention, which may apply light braking or steering if a driver ignores a warning and begins moving toward an occupied lane. Do not assume that a vehicle’s monitoring feature can intervene unless its documentation says it can. NHTSA explains the difference between warnings and intervention technologies.

What the indicator light means
Generally, an illuminated blind-spot indicator means the system has detected something in its monitored area; a flashing light or sound may indicate that the driver is signaling toward a detected vehicle. The exact meaning depends on the make, model and model year. Check the owner manual for the meaning of a steady or flashing indicator, any accompanying sound, and the system’s operating conditions.
Limits you should know
Blind-spot systems do not monitor every object or condition in the same way. Coverage, speed thresholds, sensor types and warning behavior vary by vehicle, and the sensors themselves can have limitations.

- Object detection: Ford says the radar implementation described on its BLIS page detects vehicles, not pedestrians or other objects.
- Weather, curves and reversing: A 2009 Volvo technical guide for a camera-based BLIS system says its operation may be affected by heavy snow or rain and dense fog, and that the system does not work in sharp curves or while reversing. It also identifies wide trailers as a potential obstruction and says that implementation does not react to cyclists or mopeds. These limitations are specific to the described system. - Vehicle-specific operation: A system may have an activation speed or other operating conditions, as the 2017 Odyssey example illustrates. Consult the manual for the exact vehicle.
How to use it when changing lanes
- Check the owner manual to understand the system’s indicator, alerts, operating speed and known limitations.
- Check your mirrors and look to either side and behind the vehicle before changing lanes.
- Use the warning as an additional cue, not permission to move. If the lane is not clearly safe, wait.
Honda’s 2017 Odyssey manual cautions, “Do not rely only on the blind spot information system when changing lanes,” and instructs drivers to check mirrors, either side of the vehicle and behind before changing lanes. That is a model-specific manual warning, but it reflects the essential safe-use principle: the driver must visually confirm the lane is clear.

Blind-spot systems can be compared by detection technology, warning type, operating conditions, objects detected, weather or trailer limitations, and whether the feature only warns or can also intervene. NHTSA’s 2014 performance report tested three systems but said the study was not sufficient to rank them. It does not establish a ranking of current vehicles. Read the NHTSA system performance report. For a particular vehicle, verify those details in its model-year owner manual and current manufacturer information.
