To get started in BlazBlue: Central Fiction, choose Stylish controls if you want simplified inputs or Technical if you want to practice the standard manual inputs. Then use Tutorial to learn, Training to repeat situations, and Challenge to work on a character’s commands and combos. Controls vary by platform, so check the button map in your own game before following input notation.
Choose a control style
At character select, BlazBlue: Central Fiction offers Technical and Stylish control types. The official Nintendo Switch manual describes Stylish as a simplified option: special moves and Distortion Drives are easier to perform, combos can be triggered by tapping the same button, Drive moves can be activated with the SP button alone, and barrier guard is automatic.
Technical is the standard control type for manual inputs. Choose it if learning those inputs is part of your goal; choose Stylish if you want to try characters and actions with less execution overhead. Neither is the universally correct choice: the useful option is the one that lets you focus on what you want to learn.

The arcade control description uses eight directions and four main buttons: weak, medium, strong, and a character-specific Drive button. Its layout can vary by cabinet, according to the official arcade control guide. A PlayStation example is □ for weak/A, △ for medium/B, ○ for strong/C, and × for Drive/D; the official PlayStation manual also lists Taunt, SP, FN1, and FN2 and says button mappings can be changed in Options.

Those symbols are a PlayStation example, not a universal layout for PC, Switch, or arcade. For instructions written in A/B/C/D notation, match each letter to the corresponding attack or Drive button shown by your platform’s in-game settings. Read directions relative to your character’s facing: the arcade guide’s directional explanation assumes the character faces right, so a direction such as back changes sides when the character turns around.
Learn the game in a practical order
The Switch manual does not prescribe a required sequence, but its mode descriptions support this progression:

- Start with Tutorial. Learn general 2D fighting-game fundamentals and the game’s systems before trying to memorize a character’s full move set.
- Use Training to repeat a situation. Practice a control or scenario until you can perform it deliberately. The manual identifies Training as practice for different situations but does not specify every available setting.
- Try Challenge for your character. Character-specific missions cover command inputs and combos, giving you a concrete way to practice actions after choosing someone to play.
The official manuals confirm that Tutorial covers fundamentals and game systems, while Training and Challenge provide practice and character missions; they do not provide enough detail to explain every combat mechanic precisely. For exact operation of systems such as Overdrive, Barrier resource use, character-specific Drive behavior, combo scaling, or frame data, follow the in-game Tutorial or the complete manual for your platform rather than relying on generalized instructions.
Know the basic match rules
In the Switch manual’s default setup, the goal is to reduce the opponent’s life gauge to zero. A match normally goes to the first player to win two rounds, and the default round timer is 99 seconds. Both the round count and time limit can be changed in Options. If time expires, the player with more life wins. These are defaults described by the Switch manual, not immutable rules for every match setup.

Pick a mode for what you want to do

| Ranked Match / Player Match | Playing network matches. The manual says Ranked results are recorded in the ranking, while Player Match results are not. |
| Replay Theater / Gallery | Reviewing recorded battles or viewing collected game content. |
For a first session, Tutorial, Training, and Challenge are the most directly useful learning options. Story and the other single-player modes offer alternatives when you want to play outside practice. Ranked Match and Player Match are the network options described in the manual, but that documentation does not establish current matchmaking activity or service availability.
