If both wires are black, color alone cannot tell you which one is positive, hot, or neutral. First identify the kind of circuit: ordinary household AC uses hot/line and neutral, not positive and negative; a particular marked lamp cord may use ribbing to identify neutral; and a suitable meter can show polarity in an accessible low-voltage DC circuit. If these are unfamiliar household wires, don’t guess—have a qualified electrician identify them.

First determine whether the circuit is AC or DC

Household AC: hot and neutral, not positive and negative

“Positive” and “negative” describe polarity in a DC circuit. For ordinary AC wiring, the relevant terms are hot (or line) and neutral. As Fluke puts it, “AC voltage does not have polarity.” Fluke’s AC-voltage measurement guide explains the distinction.

That does not mean AC conductors are interchangeable. Their functions and connections matter, and a device may still operate with a hazardous wiring error. Fluke discusses hot, neutral, ground, and reversed wiring in its receptacle troubleshooting guidance.

DC: positive and negative polarity

In a DC circuit, positive and negative are meaningful. For an accessible, low-voltage DC circuit, a digital multimeter set to DC voltage can display the voltage and indicate which way the probes are oriented. On many digital meters, a minus sign means the probes are reversed relative to the circuit’s polarity. Fluke describes this behavior in its DC-voltage measurement guide.

KAIWEETS Voltage Tester/Non-Contact Voltage Tester with Signal Percentage, Dual Range AC 12V/70V-1000V, Live/Null Wire Tester, Electrical Tester with LCD Display, Buzzer Alarm, Wire Breakpoint Finder
  • SAFETY FIRST: It will send out multiple alarms through sound and light. When the voltage is detected, the tip will send out red light and beep. When the higher the sensed voltage is, or the closer it is to the voltage source, it beeps at a higher frequency and the percentage value will be larger. At the same time, the screen will be red or green, red means high voltage and live wire are detected, green means low voltage and null wire are detected
  • NON-CONTACT: With NCV inductive probe for AC voltage; Just place the tip near a terminal strip, outlet, or supply cord. When the tip glows red and the pen beeps, you know there's voltage present. The live wire detector can automatically detect the live or neutral wire. Ideal for breakpoint Test. Handy circuit tester for electricians, homeowners
  • DUAL RANGE: Detects standard and low voltage (12-1000V AC / 70-1000V AC) for more sensitive and flexible measurements. Press the S button to adjust sensitivity and adapt low range for doorbells, thermostats, irrigation wiring etc.; The NCV sensor automatically recognizes the voltage and displays it on the bar graph, and the percentage value can display the voltage signal intensity more intuitively
  • SECURITY LEVEL: IEC rated CAT III 1000V CAT IV 600V, Meets CE requirements; The electrical tester is safely double insulated. High Voltage Alert to warn you of voltage above 90V, the screen turn red and the safety symbol on the screen shines
  • COMPACT DESIGN: Bright LED flashlight for work in dim ares; Low-Power-Indicator when battery voltage is below 2.5V; Automatic Power Off after 5 minutes without operation or signal detection; Pocket-sized, pen hook allows you to carry it in your shirt pocket. What two black wires might mean

Unfamiliar household wiring

Do not infer hot or neutral from black insulation alone. Existing wiring may be old, modified, switched, or subject to a local system that differs from your assumptions. OSHA’s U.S. workplace rule requires grounded and grounding conductors to be identifiable and distinguishable and regulates polarity connections; it does not provide a universal color-based method for identifying unknown conductors in a household box. Read OSHA 1910.304.

If you cannot positively identify the wiring from reliable product documentation and the actual installation, stop and contact a qualified electrician. Do not touch exposed conductors or use a meter on household mains unless you are qualified to do so.

Marked parallel lamp cord

A limited exception applies to the described SPT-2 parallel lamp cord: Wire America identifies the ribbed conductor as neutral and the smooth conductor as hot. Wire America’s SPT-2 lamp-cord page gives that convention; Southwire’s SPT-2 product page identifies the cord as parallel conductors intended for lamps and small appliances.

Use this clue only when the cord is actually this type and its markings and documentation agree. Check the cord manufacturer’s instructions and the fixture instructions. Ribbing is not a universal way to identify any two black wires.

Using a multimeter for low-voltage DC

A meter can help determine polarity in an appropriate, accessible low-voltage DC circuit; it is not a reason for an unqualified person to probe household wiring. Before any measurement, make sure the meter and leads are rated for the circuit and measurement category, inspect the leads for damage, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Fluke’s test-lead safety guidance describes checking lead condition and ratings and verifying meter operation with a known-live source before and after a test. Those instrument checks do not make live mains testing appropriate for an unqualified user.

Quick decision guide

Situation What the wire color tells you What to do
Unknown household AC wiring Black alone does not establish hot or neutral. Stop and have a qualified electrician identify the conductors.
Described SPT-2 parallel lamp cord For the cited cord, ribbed is neutral and smooth is hot. Confirm cord type and check manufacturer and fixture instructions.
Accessible, low-voltage DC circuit Black insulation alone does not establish polarity. Use a suitable meter set to DC voltage, following its instructions and safety ratings.
