If your creature in the original 2001 PC game Black & White is not copying you, start with the learning leash (also called the learning rope), make sure the creature is watching, demonstrate one specific action in the right context, and reward the completed imitation rather than mere attention. If the problem is a lock-up or lost knowledge after changing lands, treat it as a possible game-version bug instead of a training mistake.
The steps below separate normal training errors from software symptoms, explain how to teach village tasks, and show what to check before changing patches or reinstalling a legacy copy.
First identify what “not learning” means
Players use “not learning” for several different symptoms. Identify yours before repeating demonstrations, because the remedy for a missed imitation is different from the remedy for a frozen leash or lost knowledge.

| The creature watches but does not copy a simple action | Training setup | Learning leash, attention, one clear demonstration |
| It copies once but does not repeat the action later | Reinforcement or unclear context | Reward the completed copy and demonstrate the exact task where it is needed |
| It is tied to a building or flag but does not perform the job | Task context | Use the correct low-stock flag or other task-specific trigger |
| The creature or leash becomes unresponsive | Software symptom | Check whether the game is patched to version 1.1 |
| Previously learned behavior disappears after moving to another land | Historical save/transition bug | Verify the installed version and back up saves before troubleshooting further |
| Instructions begin working after a tutorial milestone | Progression possibility | Complete the scaffold/building tutorial, while treating this as an anecdotal report rather than a guaranteed fix |
There is no published prevalence statistic for these failures, so a single symptom should not be treated as proof of one universal cause.

Use the learning leash for basic imitation
Community training guides recommend the learning leash, also called the learning rope, for basic demonstrations. It is intended to increase receptivity to learning while you show the behavior. This is community guidance rather than an official guarantee that every demonstration will be learned immediately.
Step-by-step basic lesson
- Choose one behavior. Do not combine several actions in one lesson. Decide whether you want the creature to pick something up, move, interact with an object, or perform another clearly observable action.
- Attach the learning leash. Use the learning leash/rope rather than assuming an ordinary tether will teach a behavior.
- Get the creature’s attention. Wait until it is looking toward you and appears to be paying attention. The archived FAQ and walkthrough both emphasize attention as part of a successful demonstration.
- Perform the action clearly. Show the exact behavior you want copied. Keep the surrounding situation simple so the creature can associate your action with the result.
- Watch for the copy. Do not reward merely because the creature noticed you. Wait for it to perform the intended action itself.
- Reward the completed behavior. Give positive feedback after the copy, then repeat the lesson only if the creature still needs practice.
If the creature is distracted, facing away, engaged with another object, or being pulled toward a different activity, repeating the same demonstration usually adds noise rather than learning. Re-establish attention first.
Reward the behavior, not the observation
A common training mistake is rewarding the creature as soon as it notices the demonstration. The archived FAQ specifically cautions against that pattern: the useful reinforcement point is after the creature properly copies the action.
Keep feedback distinguishable
The fan-authored training guide recommends proportionate rewards and punishments. It gives a 10–30% range as a rule of thumb, not as a verified game-wide threshold or official tuning value. The practical point is to avoid using the maximum response for every event. If every action receives the same extreme reaction, the creature has less information about which behaviors matter most.
- Use a stronger positive response for a behavior you want repeated consistently.
- Use a smaller response for an accidental or incomplete attempt.
- Do not punish the creature for failing to understand a demonstration it could not see or for a task whose context was wrong.
- Change one variable at a time: attention, leash, action, or reward timing.
For example, if you want the creature to move an item, wait until it performs the complete move before rewarding it. Rewarding the glance, approach, or partial motion can teach an unintended sequence.
Match the demonstration to the task context
The creature does not necessarily infer a complete job from a location alone. A leash attached near a building does not by itself guarantee that the creature understands what to do there.
Teaching a village stocking task
The training guide’s example for stocking stores uses a low-stock food or wood flag. The relevant lesson is not simply “stand beside this building.” The creature needs the task-specific situation that identifies what is missing.

- Identify the store that actually needs food or wood.
- Use the appropriate low-stock flag for that resource.
- Attach or position the creature as directed by the game’s training interaction.
- Demonstrate the stocking behavior in that context.
- Wait for the creature to complete the action, then reward it.
If you tie the creature to a building without the relevant low-stock condition, it may have no clear behavior to associate with the location. That outcome does not prove that its general learning system is broken.
Separate imitation from job training
A basic imitation lesson and a village job are different training cases. For a basic lesson, the key variables are the learning leash, attention, a single visible action, and reward timing. For a job, add the correct resource, building, flag, and state of the village. Test the simple imitation first; if that works, investigate the job’s context rather than repeatedly reteaching the creature in the wrong place.
Compare the kind of behavior you are teaching
Not every command should be tested the same way. Use the simplest case to establish whether learning works, then move to context-dependent behavior only after that test succeeds.
| Training case | What must be clear | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| Basic imitation | One visible action, learning leash, attentive creature | Demonstrate once and reward the complete copy |
| Village task | Correct building, resource, low-stock flag, and action | Recreate the shortage and show the stocking behavior there |
| Behavior involving another creature | The target creature and the intended interaction must both be present | Separate this test from a simple object interaction |
If the first row works but the second or third does not, the result points toward context rather than a total failure to learn. If none of the cases works and the creature is also freezing or losing knowledge, switch from training tests to version checks.

One 2019 forum report described a player whose creature began following instructions after the scaffold/building tutorial. That is one player’s anecdote, not a documented universal prerequisite or guaranteed fix.
If ordinary demonstrations fail early in a game, complete the available scaffold or building tutorial and then test the same simple lesson again. Record what changed: the tutorial milestone, the creature’s attention, the leash used, and the exact action. This gives you a useful comparison without assuming that the tutorial is the cause.
Use a controlled test instead of repeating random commands
Legacy games make it easy to lose track of what changed between attempts. A short test log keeps the diagnosis useful:

- Write down the land, creature, game version, and operating system.
- Save before starting, preferably in a separate slot.
- Choose one action that does not depend on a building, resource shortage, or another creature.
- Use the learning leash and wait for the creature to face and attend to you.
- Demonstrate once, then allow time for a response.
- Record whether the creature ignored the action, attempted it partially, completed it, or became unresponsive.
- Reward only a completed copy and note the response.
- Repeat once with the same conditions before changing a single variable.
This sequence distinguishes a missed demonstration from an inconsistent context. It also creates a clear record if you later need to compare an unpatched installation with version 1.1 or a community-maintained setup.

Distinguish training failure from known version symptoms
The archived version 1.1 readme lists fixes for two creature-related problems: creatures occasionally locking up while leashed and creatures forgetting learned information when moving between lands. Those symptoms are different from a creature that never understood a demonstration.
If the creature or leash locks up
- Stop treating the frozen state as a lesson that needs more rewards.
- Note whether the lock-up occurs specifically while a leash is attached.
- Check the game’s installed patch level and whether it is version 1.1.
- Back up save files before applying or changing a legacy patch.
- After patching, reproduce the situation with a test save rather than risking your main world.
The readme is an archived historical document, so compatibility with a modern operating system and a particular release media version still needs to be checked.
If learning disappears after moving between lands
Forgetting previously learned information after a land transition matches the second class of issue listed in the version 1.1 notes. Confirm that the behavior was genuinely learned before the transition, preserve a backup of the pre-transition save, and verify the patch before attempting repeated retraining. If only one action is lost, document that exact action; if all learned behavior disappears, the transition symptom is more consistent with the historical bug description.
How to interpret a patch result
A patch check is informative only when the symptom matches what the patch notes describe. If a leash lock-up stops after moving to version 1.1, that supports a software explanation for that lock-up. It does not prove that every failure to imitate was a patch defect. Likewise, if a creature still ignores an attentive, clearly demonstrated action after the version check, return to the training variables rather than repeatedly reinstalling files.

Common mistakes and their fixes
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Using an ordinary tether for a first lesson | The community guides identify the learning leash as the tool for basic receptivity | Use the learning leash/rope for the demonstration |
| Demonstrating while the creature is looking elsewhere | The creature may not register the action | Wait for attention, then show one action |
| Rewarding the creature for noticing | It can learn that attention, not the completed action, earns the response | Reward after the proper copy |
| Giving the maximum reward or punishment every time | Different behaviors become harder to distinguish | Use proportionate feedback; treat 10–30% only as a fan guideline |
| Tying the creature to a building without a task condition | A location alone may not communicate the job | Use the relevant low-stock food or wood flag and demonstrate the task |
| Assuming one forum report is a universal tutorial gate | The report is anecdotal | Complete the tutorial as a test, not as a guaranteed fix |
| Retraining after a cross-land memory loss | The symptom may be a historical patch bug | Check version 1.1 and protect saves before further experiments |
Modern installation and community patches
Legacy copies of Black & White can behave differently depending on the original game files, release version, operating system, and community fixes installed. The Black & White Community setup material and the OpenBlack project document preservation and compatibility work; they are not official Lionhead or EA support.

Use preservation guides cautiously
- OpenBlack’s decompilation process requires original game files. It is not a source for obtaining the game.
- Community patch projects may add fixes or display options, but they are unofficial.
- Follow instructions written for your operating system and installed game version, not merely for a similarly named release.
- Back up saves and keep a record of the original installation before changing files.
- Test training and land transitions in a disposable save after a technical change.
Do not use an installation guide as proof that a training mechanic works differently in every edition. First establish whether the symptom is behavioral, progression-related, or a known software fault.

No physical leash, toy, computer accessory, replacement part, or repair tool is supported as a solution here. The ball, teddy bear, dice, and leashes discussed in training material are in-game objects. A manual or strategy guide may be useful for general play, but purchasing a physical copy is not established as necessary for fixing this problem.

When to stop retraining
Further demonstrations are unlikely to help when the creature is clearly attentive, the learning leash is in use, the action is simple and visible, the completed copy is rewarded, and the failure instead appears as a freeze or loss of knowledge after changing lands. At that point, preserve the save and investigate the game version or installation.
Conversely, if a simple imitation succeeds but a store task fails, keep the software diagnosis separate. Recheck the low-stock condition, resource type, building, and demonstration rather than concluding that the creature cannot learn at all.
Quick checklist
- Original 2001 PC release identified.
- Learning leash or learning rope attached for the basic lesson.
- Creature looking at and attending to the demonstration.
- One action shown at a time.
- Reward delivered after the complete copied action.
- Feedback kept proportionate; 10–30% is an unofficial rule of thumb.
- Correct food/wood low-stock flag used for stocking tasks.
- Scaffold/building tutorial completed as a test if the issue occurs early.
- Version 1.1 checked for leash lock-ups and cross-land memory loss.
- Saves backed up before installing legacy patches or community modifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the learning leash the same as the learning rope?
Yes. Community guides use both names for the tool recommended for basic demonstrations. Attach it before showing the action, and still make sure the creature is paying attention.
Why does my creature watch me but not copy me?
Watching is only the start of the lesson. Use one clear action, wait for the creature to complete the copy, and reward that completed behavior rather than rewarding the initial observation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Will tying the creature to a building teach it the job?
Not necessarily. For store stocking, the guide’s example uses the relevant low-stock food or wood flag. The building location alone may not communicate what task is expected.

Should I use the maximum reward when the creature succeeds?
No fixed official value is established. A fan guide suggests proportionate responses and mentions 10–30% as a rule of thumb. The important distinction is to avoid making every event an identical extreme reaction.
Could the scaffold or building tutorial be blocking training?
One 2019 forum user reported better obedience after completing that tutorial. Treat it as an anecdotal test: finish the tutorial, repeat the same simple lesson, and do not assume it is a universal requirement.
What does a leash lock-up indicate?
A creature or leash becoming unresponsive is a software symptom, not simply a failed lesson. The archived version 1.1 notes list leash lock-ups among the problems fixed in that release; back up saves before changing a legacy installation.
Why did my creature forget behavior after moving to another land?
The version 1.1 notes identify loss of learned information during land changes as a historical bug. Confirm the behavior was learned, preserve the earlier save, and check the installed version before retraining repeatedly.
Can OpenBlack or a community patch guarantee that training will work?
No. These are community preservation and compatibility projects, not official support, and results depend on original files, operating system, and installed version. Follow the documentation for your exact setup and test with a disposable save.
The Bottom Line
Start with the learning leash, an attentive creature, one clearly demonstrated action, and a reward only after the complete copy. For village work, reproduce the correct low-stock food or wood condition instead of relying on a building location alone. If the creature locks up or forgets behavior after changing lands, check version 1.1 and protect your saves before modifying a legacy installation. Community patches can help compatibility, but no physical accessory is required.
