To find out why a black vertical line is on your TV, open the TV’s menu or run its built-in picture test. If the line appears there, it is likely a TV-side problem and may need professional service. If the test image is clear, check the connected device, input and cable before changing settings or buying a replacement cable.
First, find out where the line appears
Check whether the line is visible over the TV’s own menu, in a built-in picture test, on every input, or only while using one device or source. A line that appears in the menu or test image is not limited to the picture coming from one HDMI device. If it appears only with one source, investigate that source and its connection first.
Samsung, Sony and LG all recommend using the TV’s own display or diagnostic tools to help separate a TV-side issue from a signal-path problem. The names and locations of these tools depend on the model and software version.

Look in the TV’s picture, support or self-diagnosis settings for a picture test or screen self-diagnosis. Use the instructions for your exact model; menu paths can differ across model years and software versions.

- The line appears in the test or over the TV menu: The symptom is present independently of the connected source. Restart the TV and, if it remains, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
- The test image is clear: Focus on the input, external device and cable that produce the affected picture.
Samsung’s picture troubleshooting guidance, LG’s screen self-diagnosis guidance and Sony’s picture and screen troubleshooting steps describe these checks. Follow the support instructions for your own model rather than assuming a menu path from another TV will match.
If the test is clear, check the cable and source
- Turn off the TV. Before disconnecting or reconnecting cables, switch the TV off.
- Inspect and reseat the connection. Check the HDMI or antenna cable and the ports for visible damage or debris, then reconnect securely.
- Try another source or input. If practical, use a different device or input to see whether the line follows one source.
- Substitute a known-good cable if available. If the picture clears with another cable, replace the suspect cable. If the line remains across sources, return to the TV’s diagnostics and seek model-specific support.
Manufacturer guidance recommends checking the connection and testing another cable or source when the built-in picture test is clear. A replacement HDMI cable is worth considering only when these checks point to the cable; it cannot fix a fault in the TV’s display.

Check settings only when the symptom fits
Lines along the edge of the picture
If the marks occur at the edge rather than as a persistent line through the display, check the aspect-ratio setting. LG recommends trying 16:9 or Original for edge-line symptoms. The available labels and controls vary by model.

Artifacts tied to an HDMI device
LG notes that an HDMI Deep Color compatibility issue may cause lines or other picture artifacts with an external device. If the problem occurs only on that input, consult the TV’s manual or model support page for the setting and, if available, try turning HDMI Deep Color off for the affected input. These setting checks are possibilities for matching symptoms, not evidence that a persistent line in the TV’s own test image is a settings problem.

When to contact the manufacturer or a repair provider
Arrange support if the line remains visible in the TV’s own menu or built-in test after a restart and basic checks. Samsung notes that a black line can be associated with a cracked screen and that physical damage may not be covered by warranty. Check your warranty terms and ask about diagnosis and repair charges before authorizing work; the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal repair cost or warranty outcome.
If the picture test is clear but the line persists with multiple devices or connections, provide the support team with the TV model, affected inputs, and whether the line appears in the menu or test image. That information helps them distinguish a source issue from a problem that needs inspection.
