A black screen is a symptom, not one universal fault. First check whether the device has power, whether anything is visible or audible, and whether the problem began after an update, a connection change, or a drop. Then follow the recovery steps for that device; a Windows blank screen, a phone with a failed display, and a TV showing “no signal” need different fixes.
Start with checks that apply to any device
Before trying a reset, work out whether the device is off, running without showing an image, or sending its picture to the wrong display. Look for a charging or power light, startup logo, cursor, warning, or stop code. Listen for sound and check for vibration on a phone. These clues help narrow down the fault, but none identifies the cause on its own.
- Connect the device to power, check that the outlet and charger work, and allow it to charge if its battery may be empty.
- For a monitor or TV, confirm that it is powered on and set to the input connected to the computer, streamer, or other source. Reseat the cable at both ends.
- Disconnect recently added peripherals, HDMI switches, or receivers when practical, then check whether the display returns.
- Think about what changed just before the screen went black: an operating-system update, a new display or cable, a peripheral, or physical damage can point toward different troubleshooting paths.
If the device appears to be running but its built-in screen stays blank, or the device remains unresponsive after the appropriate steps below, consult the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Avoid repeatedly forcing resets.

Fix a black or blank screen in Windows 10 or 11
Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 covers several different symptoms. A cursor on a blank screen can point to a stalled Windows process or driver; a blank screen after login may involve display output or a user profile; and a problem that began after an update may involve a driver or incomplete update. A blinking cursor can mean UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of your PC.

Try these steps when Windows is blank but there is no stop code
- Check power and display connections. Plug in the PC if needed, power on the external monitor, and check its cable and selected input. If possible, test with a different cable or monitor.
- Reset the graphics driver. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. A beep or brief flicker may indicate that Windows reset the driver.
- Cycle Windows display modes. Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter to move through the available display modes. This can help if the image is being sent to another display.
- Restart Windows Explorer if the security screen opens. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, open Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer.
- Disconnect peripherals and force-restart only if needed. Remove nonessential connected devices. Microsoft also lists holding the power button for 20 seconds as a force-restart step; unsaved work may be lost.
- Use Windows Recovery if the problem continues. From Recovery, try Safe Mode to update or roll back the graphics driver. If the blank screen began recently, System Restore is another available Recovery option. Follow the prompts shown on your PC.
If the screen shows a stop code
A visible stop code is not the same as a blank screen: it indicates that Windows encountered a serious problem involving hardware, a driver, or software, and may restart unexpectedly. Write down the stop code and any module name shown, along with recent hardware or software changes. Follow Microsoft’s stop-code and unexpected-restart troubleshooting rather than treating it as a display-routing problem.
Restart an iPhone with a black screen
Use the sequence for the iPhone model; the button combinations are not interchangeable. Apple’s restart instructions for an unresponsive iPhone specify these steps:

First check the display itself. Google recommends looking for cracks or chips, removing a case or screen protector, taking off gloves, removing stickers that cover the screen or sensors, and cleaning the screen. Its Android screen troubleshooting guide also suggests holding the power button for about 30 seconds to restart most phones. Safe Mode instructions vary, so use the phone maker’s directions rather than guessing at a button combination.

If the phone will not turn on
Google’s power and charging guidance suggests holding the power button for 5–7 seconds as a usual first restart step. Check the charger, cable, charging port, and outlet, using a compatible charger. These instructions address a phone that will not charge or power on; they are not the same as the longer restart suggestion for a screen that is not working properly.
To help distinguish a display fault from a phone that is off, call the phone or use Find Hub. If it rings while the screen remains blank, Google recommends contacting an authorized repair center.

Recover a Mac that starts to a blank screen
A black, grey, or blue screen can appear during a normal Mac startup. If the Mac is stuck on a blank screen, Apple’s blank-screen startup guidance says to hold the power button for up to 10 seconds to shut it down, then turn it on again.

Use macOS Recovery if restarting does not help
- Start the Mac in macOS Recovery using the instructions for its model.
- Open Disk Utility in Recovery and run it to repair the startup disk, then restart the Mac.
- If the screen is still blank, start Recovery again and reinstall macOS.
If Recovery will not start, a Mac with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip may need a firmware revive or restore. If the Mac continues to start to a blank screen, or an external display is involved, use Apple’s guidance to rule out the display and arrange service when needed.

Fix a TV or streamer that shows a black screen or “no signal”
First check the TV’s selected input and the physical connection. Then follow instructions for the specific source device. These Apple TV and Chromecast steps are not universal instructions for every TV or streaming box.
Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD
Apple’s Apple TV black-screen and power troubleshooting recommends unplugging and reseating the HDMI cable at both ends, trying another cable, confirming that the TV input matches the connected port, and trying another HDMI port. If a switch or AV receiver is in the signal path, connect Apple TV directly to the TV to test whether that equipment is involved.
If you test with another cable, match the cable to the connection requirements: Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.0. Apple also documents a remote-button resolution reset and power-cord checks in its troubleshooting guide. If the screen remains blank after those checks, service may be needed.
Chromecast
For a Chromecast, Google’s TV no-signal and black-screen troubleshooting says to power it directly with its supplied cable and adapter and set the TV to the matching HDMI input. Reboot it by unplugging its power for one minute.
If that does not help, remove other HDMI devices and power-cycle the TV. Check the cable fit, try another HDMI input or display, and check firmware. For an applicable HDCP error, check the connection among the Chromecast, TV, and any receiver in use.
