To black out text in a PDF permanently, use a PDF editor’s dedicated Redact feature, apply the redactions, remove hidden information where the editor supports it, and save a separate copy. A black rectangle or annotation can hide text visually while leaving the underlying content intact.
Why a black box is not the same as redaction
A shape, highlight, font-color change, or other visual cover may conceal text on the page without removing it from the PDF. A recipient might still be able to select or copy the covered text, or the file may retain other information about it. Adobe’s guidance distinguishes marking content for removal from applying the redactions that remove it. See Adobe’s redaction instructions.
Use a dedicated redaction operation rather than a drawing or annotation. Redaction removes selected visible content; sanitization is a separate step for hidden information such as metadata or embedded content.

- Make a working copy. Keep the original separate and open the copy in Acrobat.
- Choose All tools > Redact a PDF.
- Select Redact text and images, then drag across the text or image to mark it for removal. Adobe also documents selecting whole pages when necessary.
- Choose Apply and confirm the removal when prompted.
- Continue through the prompt to sanitize the document and remove hidden information.
- Save the sanitized document under a new filename.

Find repeated text before applying redactions
Redacting one visible occurrence does not remove other instances elsewhere in the document. Acrobat’s Find text and redact workflow can search a single word or phrase, multiple terms, or supported patterns. Adobe’s help page, updated September 23, 2025, describes reviewing individual matches or selecting all occurrences, using whole- or partial-word matching, marking the chosen results, and applying the redactions.

Search patterns can help locate items such as phone numbers, card numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, and dates. Review the matches before selecting them: a broad search can catch text you intend to retain, while an overly narrow search can miss a sensitive variant. Sanitize hidden information as well as visible content
Redaction addresses selected visible text and graphics. Sanitization targets information that may not be apparent on the page. Depending on the file, Adobe lists possible hidden items including metadata, embedded content, scripts, comments, attachments, hidden layers, form data, and information from previous saves. The available categories depend on the document and software.

Use the editor’s sanitize or remove-hidden-information option when appropriate, then save the resulting file separately. Adobe explains the distinction in About redacting and sanitizing PDFs.
Check the saved file before sharing it
- Reopen the saved output, not just the working document, and confirm the sensitive content is no longer visible.
- Try searching for or copying the redacted term. If it remains accessible, the content was not successfully removed.
- Inspect the pages around each redaction and review search results to catch missed occurrences or accidental removal of nearby text.
- Do not treat these checks as proof that every structural clue has been eliminated. A file can reveal information in ways a visual inspection or text search does not detect.
What PDF redaction security research means for short redactions
A 2023 peer-reviewed paper by Maxwell Bland, Anushya Iyer, and Kirill Levchenko, “Story Beyond the Eye: Glyph Positions Break PDF Text Redaction,” examined 11 PDF redaction toolkits. The authors reported that two left marked text in the PDF, while other tools removed text but could retain glyph-position information that enabled inference. They found short redactions, such as a name or one or two words, could be particularly vulnerable and recommended removing surrounding context where feasible. These findings apply to the products and data studied in the paper; they are not a current comparative test of PDF editors. Read the paper at Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies.

The paper also reported more than 6,000 non-excising redactions in its corpus of U.S. court documents. In a specified experiment using Microsoft Word-generated PDFs, the authors identified a surname correctly 14% of the time. Those figures describe the study’s corpus and setup, not all court filings or a general failure rate for PDF redaction software.

The paper says vendors had been notified and, to the authors’ knowledge at publication, had not made changes that significantly mitigated the glyph-position finding. The available sources do not establish whether current software builds have fully addressed it; they are not enough to claim that a particular current editor is vulnerable or fixed. Adobe’s current workflow documentation describes its redaction and sanitization steps but does not resolve that specific question. Adobe’s security bulletin index is a place to check for current advisories, not confirmation of a redaction-specific fix.

Before using an editor for sensitive material, check whether it provides each of these capabilities:
- A dedicated operation that applies redactions, rather than only drawing or annotating over content.
- Search for repeated terms or patterns, with a way to review matches before removal.
- A separate sanitize or remove-hidden-information step.
- Support for the PDF type and page scope you need to redact.
- Controls to save a separate output and inspect the result.
The documented workflow details here cover Adobe Acrobat; they do not establish a ranking of other PDF editors. Legal and regulatory obligations vary by jurisdiction and use case, so product instructions alone do not determine whether a redaction meets a particular legal requirement.
