The browser version is an unofficial fan project, not an Activision release or a guaranteed replica of the 2010 game. Its guide describes a desktop, solo-only experience with a reported ten map destinations and a custom horde mode. The official Call of Duty: Black Ops offers native PC and console play, and its Zombies mode supports up to four players. The key difference is not just browser versus installation: it is a community-made solo option versus the original cooperative game.
What is the Black Ops browser game?
It is an unofficial fan port of the Zombies experience from Call of Duty: Black Ops (often called Black Ops 1), hosted at vel.gg. The project guide says it is not an official Activision release. “In a browser” describes how the project is accessed; it does not mean Activision supports it or that it reproduces every part of the original game.
Activision identifies the original Call of Duty: Black Ops as a Treyarch game released on November 9, 2010, with PC among its platforms. Its PC version is a native game with an installation process, rather than a browser page.

How do the browser project and original game compare?
| What differs | Browser fan project | Official Black Ops |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Unofficial fan port, according to the project guide. | Activision release developed by Treyarch; released November 9, 2010. |
| How you play | Desktop browser; the guide describes loading game data and using a keyboard and mouse. | Native PC or console game; the PC manual includes installation instructions. |
| Players in Zombies | The guide describes the project as solo-only, without co-op or split-screen. | Activision describes co-op with up to three friends; its PC manual lists Zombies for one to four players. |
| Maps and modes | The guide reports ten map destinations and a project-added “Hell mode”/horde mode, with a configurable starting round and zombie cap and no perk machines in that mode. | The original Zombies mode and release content; the browser project’s reported horde mode is not an official Black Ops feature. |
| Device focus | The guide says phones and tablets are unsupported and describes desktop, memory, and graphics requirements. | Played through the native PC or console release, not through this browser project. |
The browser details in this comparison are claims made by the project guide, not independently audited features or compatibility results. The official player counts come from Activision’s Black Ops game page and the PC manual.

Can I play CoD Zombies in a browser?
The project guide describes a desktop-browser route. It says the game has a data-loading step and uses keyboard and mouse; it does not establish a reliable load time, frame rate, or list of compatible devices. Availability and browser compatibility can change, so the guide’s claims should not be treated as a promise that the host will always work.
- Use a desktop setup if following the guide’s stated requirements; it says phones and tablets are unsupported.
- Expect memory and graphics capability to matter, but the guide does not provide independently tested hardware benchmarks.
- Do not infer official support, exact feature parity, or a verified technical relationship to the original game from the fact that it runs in a browser.
Can I play with friends?
The browser project’s guide says no: it describes the experience as solo-only, with no co-op or split-screen. The original Zombies mode is built for cooperative play. Activision’s game page says players can use weapons to fend off waves with “up to 3 friends,” and the PC manual labels Zombies as one to four players.

If playing Zombies with friends is the deciding factor, the official PC or console game is the relevant option. The browser guide does not establish that the fan project requires owning the original game, and this comparison does not verify the fan project’s legal status.

The guide presents the fan project as a browser experience and does not state an ownership requirement. That is not proof of its legal status, nor does it establish whether the host may change access or availability. Do not assume you need to purchase the original game to launch the fan project; the guide describes it separately, and the two are different products.

What does the browser guide say about maps and horde mode?
The guide lists ten map destinations, including launch and downloadable-content maps as well as maps that originally appeared in World at War. It also reports a project-added “Hell mode” or horde mode, where the starting round and zombie cap can be configured and perk machines are absent. These are host-guide claims that may change; they are not an independently verified inventory and should not be confused with official Activision content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Activision’s mobile Zombies notice affect the browser or PC game?
No. Activision’s notice concerns the separate mobile title Call of Duty: Black Ops – Zombies, not the 2010 PC/console release or the browser fan project. Activision Support says new downloads for that mobile app ended on December 13, 2021, and its online mode ended on May 14, 2022. The notice says previously installed local mobile versions would continue to operate, while warning that device software updates could affect support. Those dates do not establish the availability of the PC/console game or browser project.
