If your Black Ops Cold War teammates can’t hear you, first check the game’s voice-chat channel, microphone selection, mute state, and activation settings. If you can’t hear them, check the chat channel and voice volume instead. Then verify the headset and your PC or console’s audio settings. These checks help identify the failing layer without treating an old, resolved crossplay bug as a current diagnosis.
Start with the symptom
Separate outgoing voice (others can’t hear you) from incoming voice (you can’t hear others). The controls overlap, but the first checks differ.
- Others can’t hear you: Check the microphone’s mute switch, input selection, permissions, microphone volume, and activation mode.
- You can’t hear others: Check Voice Chat Volume, whether the game is set to Party Chat or Game Chat, and the platform’s chat focus or audio output route.
- Only cross-platform contacts are affected: Confirm you are using the intended game-chat channel and check service status if other online features are also failing. Don’t assume a previously documented crossplay issue is still active.
Check Black Ops Cold War’s voice-chat settings
Open Audio > Voice Chat. The game’s PC and PlayStation guides document these controls, though menu labels may have changed since the guides were published around launch.

- Make sure Voice Chat is enabled.
- Check Voice Chat Volume if other players are too quiet or inaudible.
- Check Microphone Volume if your outgoing voice is too quiet.
- On PC, choose a Microphone Activation Mode that matches how you want to transmit. If you use open mic and speech cuts out or fails to trigger, adjust Open Mic Sensitivity. The guides do not prescribe one sensitivity value for every microphone.
- Check the Voice & Text Channel Toggle. Party Chat is for your party; choose Game Chat to speak with or hear the broader match.
Blizzard describes the Voice Chat category as covering both microphone audio and game and party chat audio. That distinction makes the channel setting important for both speaking and listening. On PC, verify Windows can use the microphone
A correct in-game selection cannot fix a microphone that Windows has muted, failed to detect, or blocked from desktop-app access.
- Open Windows Sound settings and confirm the headset microphone you intend to use is selected as the input device. Check its physical mute switch, connection, and any headset controls.
- In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone, and Let desktop apps access your microphone.
- In Windows 10, the corresponding controls are under Settings > Privacy > Microphone. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; the operating system continues to run, but it is out of support.
- Return to Black Ops Cold War, select the intended microphone in the game if that option is available, and check the voice-chat controls again.
Microsoft’s microphone privacy guidance explains the Windows access controls. A December 2020 GameRevolution workaround suggests toggling Voice Chat and trying the game’s “Default Communication Device” after choosing the mic in Windows. Treat that as dated secondary advice, not an official or guaranteed fix.

On PlayStation, check mute, input level, and chat focus
PS5
- Press the controller’s mute button to unmute the microphone.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone, select the intended Input Device, and check Adjust Microphone Level.
- Use the control centre’s voice-chat card to switch between party and game chat and adjust the balance.
PS4
- Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices, check Output Devices, and open Adjust Microphone Level. The input-volume bar should respond when the microphone is working.
- Open Party > Party Settings > Chat Audio and select the intended chat priority.
PlayStation notes that PS4 cannot output voice chat and game audio to both a headset and TV at the same time. If the microphone input meter does not respond, check the headset’s mute switch and reconnect it. Then try another headset or controller if available. Check service status when other online features fail
If voice problems occur alongside trouble connecting to matches or other online features, check the Cold War server-status indicator and the relevant platform’s service status. Activision’s connection guidance recommends a wired Ethernet connection for online play and includes network-test and router checks. Those steps may help connection-related symptoms; they cannot repair a muted or undetected microphone. Activision’s connection and networking guidance covers connection checks.

What the old crossplay voice report does—and doesn’t—mean
Activision’s known-issues listing, updated July 7, 2023, places this item under resolved issues: “We fixed an issue where some players were unable to hear other party members on different platforms during crossplay.” It documents a past problem, not a confirmed current outage or an explanation for every cross-platform voice failure. Check your channel and live service status rather than treating that old report as a guaranteed cause. Activision’s Black Ops Cold War known-issues page records the resolved item.
