If your television is a true monochrome set, no picture setting or streaming device can make its screen display color. You need a color-capable television. If it is a color model that has suddenly gone black and white, the issue may be the source, input, connections, settings, or the TV itself—so check the signal path before considering a repair.
First identify which kind of problem you have
A black-and-white picture alone does not tell you whether the television is monochrome or whether a color-capable TV has lost color. That distinction determines the fix.
| Situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Physically monochrome television | The display cannot produce a color image, even if it receives a compatible signal. | Use a color-capable television to watch color. |
| Color-capable television showing monochrome | The set can display color, but the current signal path or the television may not be delivering it. | Check the source, input, connections, and model-specific settings; seek service guidance if needed. |
If you do not know whether the set is a color model, check its exact model number and documentation. Do not assume that a picture appearing in black and white means a setting is switched off.

If the TV is a color model, troubleshoot the signal path
Try these checks in order. Menu names and available settings vary by model, so use the manual for your exact television rather than following generic instructions to change a particular setting.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test a known color source. Try another source or program that should be in color. If only one source looks monochrome, focus on that device or its connection.
- Select the correct input. Use the TV’s input/source control to choose the port connected to the device you are testing.
- Check the source device. Review its output settings and confirm it is sending a color picture. If possible, test it on another color-capable display.
- Inspect the connections. Make sure the cables are firmly connected at both ends and that the device is connected to the input you selected. If available, test a different cable or input to see whether the symptom changes.
- Consult the TV’s manual. Check picture and input settings for the exact model. If the picture remains monochrome across sources after these checks, consult model-specific service information or a qualified repair professional.
If the problem appears only with one source or input, that narrows where to investigate; if it persists across sources, the television itself may need attention. These checks do not establish a universal repair procedure, and CRT televisions should not be opened or repaired as a do-it-yourself project: CRT equipment can involve hazardous high voltages.
If the television is genuinely monochrome
A monochrome display has no color-producing capability to enable. The practical solution for color viewing is to replace it with a color-capable television. An adapter, antenna change, or streaming device cannot add color capability to the display.

This limitation is consistent with the history of U.S. television: the 1941 analog standard was designed for black-and-white sets, and the later compatible color standard allowed older monochrome sets to show a monochrome image—not to reproduce color. A textbook account says the FCC tentatively approved a CBS color system in 1952 that black-and-white sets could not receive; RCA’s compatible system became the color standard in 1954. Media Essentials, 5th edition
The same source identifies the RCA CT-100, introduced in 1954, as the first mass-produced electronic color television, priced at $1,000 or more at the time. That is a historical figure, not a current television price.
