Bitwarden is the better choice for most budget-conscious users, open-source advocates, and anyone who wants self-hosting or a genuinely capable free plan. 1Password is the stronger fit if you value its Secret Key security model, Travel Mode, guest sharing, polished personal apps, and integrated business and developer workflows. The right answer depends less on encryption claims—both protect vault data strongly—and more on price, recovery expectations, administration, and the features your household or organization will actually use.
The short answer
Choose Bitwarden when keeping recurring cost low, using a free tier, inspecting open-source code, or hosting the service yourself matters most. Bitwarden publishes lower annual prices for paid plans and supports cross-platform apps, end-to-end AES-256 encryption, secure sharing, SCIM and SSO integrations, and self-hosting.
Choose 1Password when you want a device-generated Secret Key added to your account password, temporary vault removal while traveling, guest accounts, polished personal applications, Watchtower alerts, dedicated item categories, or built-in developer tooling. Those conveniences come with a higher published US price and no free plan reported by TechRadar.
Neither service is universally “more secure.” Bitwarden emphasizes transparent, open-source software and a conventional encrypted-vault design. 1Password adds a 128-bit Secret Key that an attacker would also need to decrypt an organization’s data after stealing an account password. That distinction changes setup and recovery, not the need for a strong account password and protected recovery information.

Price, free access, and total annual cost
Bitwarden publishes prices in US dollars, billed annually, before taxes. Bitwarden’s comparison page listed the figures below in 2026.
| Bitwarden plan | Published price | Annual equivalent | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | Individuals who need core password-manager functions without a subscription |
| Premium | $1.65 per month, billed annually | $19.80 per year | One person wanting paid features at the lowest published price |
| Families | $3.99 per month, billed annually | $47.88 per year | Households that need shared vaults and family-oriented sharing |
| Teams | $4 per user per month, billed annually | Depends on the number of users | Small organizations requiring centralized administration |
| Enterprise | $6 per user per month, billed annually | Depends on the number of users | Organizations needing enterprise controls and integrations |
Taxes are excluded from Bitwarden’s published figures, so the amount charged at checkout can be higher depending on location. The free plan is the biggest financial differentiator: a single user can start without a recurring bill and upgrade only if additional features are needed.
TechRadar reported that 1Password’s US prices were scheduled to increase on March 27, 2026, to $47.88 per year for an individual plan and $71.88 per year for a family plan. Those are the announced post-increase annual prices, not a universal price for every country, currency, tax jurisdiction, or billing arrangement. TechRadar reported no free 1Password plan.

On the published figures, Bitwarden Premium costs less than half of the announced US 1Password individual price, and Bitwarden Families is lower than the announced 1Password family price. A business buyer should request a current quote or check the live administrator pricing page before budgeting: Bitwarden’s annual per-user figures are provided, but comparable 1Password business prices are not provided.
Security models: strong encryption versus an extra account secret
Bitwarden’s encrypted-vault approach
Bitwarden states that it protects passwords and private information with end-to-end AES-256-bit encryption, salted hashing, and PBKDF2 SHA-256. Encryption occurs before synchronized vault data is available to the service, so the provider is not supposed to receive readable passwords. Its open-source code enables independent inspection and community review, although open source is not a guarantee that every deployment is perfectly configured.
Bitwarden’s self-host option gives technically capable users control over where the service runs. Self-hosting can help with data-location requirements or internal infrastructure policies, but it also transfers responsibility for server hardening, updates, backups, monitoring, availability, and recovery to the operator. A self-hosted deployment is not automatically safer than the managed service.

1Password’s account password plus Secret Key
1Password documents a two-secret-key derivation model. Your account password is combined with a device-generated 128-bit Secret Key when the account is created. 1Password says the Secret Key means an attacker cannot decrypt an organization’s data even if the account password is stolen. The key is designed to stay on trusted devices and in the Emergency Kit or equivalent account-recovery material.
This model adds protection against a stolen or guessed account password, but it also adds a recovery obligation: losing both your account password and the Secret Key can prevent access. Save the Emergency Kit offline, keep it somewhere physically secure, and make sure family or organizational recovery procedures identify who can help when a device is lost.
What the security difference means in practice
| Question | Bitwarden | 1Password |
|---|---|---|
| Primary vault protection described by the vendor | End-to-end AES-256 encryption, salted hashing, and PBKDF2 SHA-256 | Account password combined with a device-generated 128-bit Secret Key |
| Transparency option | Open-source software | Secret Key design documented by the vendor |
| Self-hosting | Supported | No 1Password self-hosting option is identified in the product information |
| Main recovery consideration | Protect the account password and any recovery method; self-host operators must also maintain backups | Protect both the account password and Secret Key; losing both can block decryption |
For either service, use a long, unique account password, enable available multifactor authentication, update apps and browsers, and keep recovery material offline. A password manager reduces reuse and phishing risk only when the account protecting the vault is itself well secured.
Families and personal sharing
When Bitwarden Families makes sense
Bitwarden Families is priced at $3.99 per month when billed annually, or $47.88 per year before taxes. Bitwarden also advertises secure sharing and cross-platform applications. That combination suits households that want shared credentials—such as utility, streaming, or emergency accounts—while retaining separate private vault items.
The free plan can be enough for one person, but a household generally benefits from a paid family arrangement when several people need coordinated sharing and administration. Confirm the current member and collection limits on the plan page before purchase because those limits are not included in the published figures here.

When 1Password Families makes sense
1Password’s announced US family price is $71.88 per year after March 27, 2026. Its documented strengths include guest accounts and dedicated item categories. Guest access can be useful when a relative, contractor, or caregiver needs a narrowly scoped credential without becoming a full family member. Dedicated categories can make it easier to distinguish logins from documents, identities, secure notes, and other records.

1Password also offers Travel Mode. Before crossing a border or entering a higher-risk environment, you can mark selected vaults for travel and temporarily remove them from devices; after the trip, you restore access. This is valuable for people who carry sensitive work and personal data on the same phone or laptop. It is a workflow feature, not a replacement for device encryption or a secure travel plan.
Family decision rule
- Pick Bitwarden if the household’s priority is the lowest published annual cost, a free starting tier, open-source transparency, or self-hosting.
- Pick 1Password if guest sharing, Travel Mode, dedicated categories, or a more guided personal-app experience justifies the higher annual price.
- For either service, agree in advance which accounts are shared, who can recover access, and how a departing household member’s access will be removed.
Alerts and everyday password hygiene
1Password Watchtower
1Password documents Watchtower alerts for weak, reused, or compromised credentials and breached domains. These warnings turn a static vault into a maintenance system: you can identify accounts that need a stronger password, stop reusing a password across sites, and respond when a service reports a breach.
Alerts do not change a password automatically or prove that every account is safe. Open the affected website through a trusted route, change the password to a newly generated value, revoke unknown sessions where the site supports it, and enable multifactor authentication.
Recommended Free Tools
Bitwarden’s practical hygiene advantage
Bitwarden’s published comparison lists encrypted storage, secure sharing, cross-platform apps, and the free tier, but it does not provide a matching list of Bitwarden alert categories. Do not assume that an identically named health dashboard or breach-monitoring feature exists in every Bitwarden edition. If breach alerts are essential, verify the exact capability and plan in the current Bitwarden interface before migrating.
Regardless of manager, perform a first cleanup pass: replace reused passwords, prioritize email and financial accounts, remove credentials for services you no longer use, and store recovery codes in a protected vault record. A password manager is most valuable when it helps you act on weak credentials rather than merely collect them.
Business administration, SSO, SCIM, and monitoring
Bitwarden for organizations
Bitwarden publishes Teams at $4 per user per month and Enterprise at $6 per user per month, both billed annually in US dollars before taxes. Its documented organizational capabilities include secure sharing, SCIM integrations, SSO integrations, cross-platform applications, and self-hosting. SCIM can automate user provisioning and deprovisioning from an identity system; SSO can let employees sign in through the company’s identity provider. These integrations reduce manual account work but require careful group mapping and a tested emergency-admin path.

Enterprise buyers should decide whether the managed service or self-hosting is appropriate. Managed hosting removes server maintenance from the internal team. Self-hosting may satisfy a specific control or data-location requirement, but the organization must operate the infrastructure and prove that backups and incident procedures work.
1Password for organizations
1Password positions its product for enterprise use and documents guest accounts, integrated workflows, and developer tooling. The vendor’s comparison also highlights enterprise capabilities that differ from Bitwarden’s included plans. Because 1Password’s business documentation does not list every business tier or its current per-user price, procurement teams should validate seat minimums, SSO, SCIM, audit and SIEM integrations, guest limits, retention, and support terms directly in the current business documentation.
Business selection checklist
- Identity lifecycle: Test SSO sign-in, SCIM provisioning, role changes, and immediate deprovisioning with a small pilot group.
- Emergency access: Document at least two administrators, protect recovery material, and test what happens if the primary identity provider is unavailable.
- Sharing boundaries: Separate team, department, and company-wide collections so a broad group does not receive unnecessary secrets.
- Monitoring: Confirm which audit, breach, and SIEM events your selected plan exports before signing a contract.
- Hosting: Compare the operational cost of self-hosting with the compliance value it provides; do not treat self-hosting as a free feature.
Developer secrets and SSH workflows
1Password’s developer orientation
1Password documents developer tools and SSH workflows alongside ordinary login storage. That can let a team keep application credentials, API tokens, and SSH material in a controlled system rather than scattering them through shell history, dotfiles, shared documents, or CI variables. Dedicated item categories also help distinguish a human login from a machine credential or infrastructure key.
Use separate vaults or collections for production, staging, and personal development. Limit access by role, rotate credentials after a team change, and avoid placing a long-lived production secret in a developer’s personal vault.
Bitwarden’s developer trade-off
1Password’s official comparison says some Bitwarden developer or secrets-management capabilities require additional cost. Bitwarden remains attractive when a team primarily needs password storage and sharing, but a development organization should price the required secrets tooling rather than assuming it is included in the base organizational plan.

Apps, browsers, and self-hosting
Bitwarden advertises cross-platform applications, so it is designed for use across the devices and operating systems a household or company already owns. 1Password is described as offering polished personal apps and workflows across websites and applications. In either case, test the browser extension, desktop app, mobile app, autofill behavior, and sign-in flow on the exact devices your household or workforce uses.
Do not choose solely from a feature checklist. A manager that works reliably in your browsers and on your phones is more likely to be used correctly. During a trial, verify that autofill does not select the wrong identity, that shared items appear only in intended collections, and that locking and unlocking behave acceptably on mobile.
Self-hosting is a Bitwarden differentiator. It can support a policy requiring internal control of the service, but it introduces operational duties: patch the host, restrict administrative access, encrypt backups, monitor storage and uptime, test restoration, and plan for a failed server. If your team cannot staff those duties, managed hosting may reduce risk even when self-hosting is technically available.

Before importing anything
- Inventory the accounts, secure notes, identities, payment records, shared credentials, recovery codes, and developer secrets that must move.
- Decide which records are personal, family-shared, team-shared, or restricted to administrators.
- Choose the destination plan and confirm that its sharing, guest, developer, and identity integrations match the inventory.
- Create the destination account with a unique, high-entropy account password. If using 1Password, record the Secret Key and Emergency Kit offline before adding sensitive data.
Export and import carefully
- Export from the old manager only on a trusted, malware-free device and only when you can complete the transfer immediately.
- Use the destination’s supported import method and review field mapping. A login, secure note, identity, payment card, SSH key, and recovery code may not map to the same item type.
- Compare record counts and spot-check the highest-risk accounts, shared items, attachments, and notes.
- Delete the plaintext export from the device, recycle bin, cloud-sync folders, and backups created during the migration. Emptying one folder is not enough if endpoint backups retain the file.
- Keep the old manager available until you have signed into critical accounts from the new vault and confirmed that family or team members can access their intended collections.
Recovery tests to run
- Lock and unlock the vault on every primary device.
- Confirm multifactor authentication works with the stored method and that emergency codes are accessible without the vault being unlocked.
- For 1Password, verify that the account password, Secret Key, and Emergency Kit are all available through the agreed recovery process.
- For a Bitwarden self-hosted deployment, restore a backup in a test environment and document who can rebuild the service.
- Remove a test user or device from a shared collection and verify that access ends as expected.
Which manager should you choose?
Choose Bitwarden if…
- You want a capable free plan for an individual.
- Your main criterion is the lowest published annual cost.
- You value open-source transparency and the option to self-host.
- You need cross-platform apps, secure sharing, SCIM, or SSO at published organizational prices.
- You are comfortable taking on extra administration for self-hosting or separately pricing advanced secrets-management features.
Choose 1Password if…
- You want the documented 128-bit Secret Key added to your account password.
- Travel Mode is important for temporarily removing selected vaults from devices.
- Your family or organization needs guest accounts and dedicated item categories.
- Watchtower alerts for weak, reused, compromised, or breached credentials are a priority.
- Developers need integrated tools and SSH workflows, and the higher subscription price fits the budget.
Run a pilot instead of guessing
For a household, migrate a small set of non-critical shared accounts first, then test mobile autofill, family access, and recovery. For a company, pilot with one administrator, one manager, one developer, and one ordinary employee. Measure provisioning, deprovisioning, sharing boundaries, browser reliability, alert handling, and recovery before committing every user.
Bottom line
Bitwarden wins on value, flexibility, open-source transparency, and self-hosting. Its free plan and lower published annual prices make it the default recommendation for individuals and families watching cost, while its SCIM and SSO support give organizations a solid foundation.
1Password earns its higher price when the Secret Key model, Travel Mode, guest access, Watchtower, polished apps, or developer workflows solve a real problem for you. Select it when those capabilities will be used—not simply because a longer feature list sounds safer. In both cases, the strongest result comes from a unique account password, multifactor authentication, disciplined sharing, and a recovery plan that has been tested before an emergency.
