If BitLocker asks for a recovery key after Windows Update, first record the first eight digits of the recovery-key ID shown on screen. Find the saved 48-digit key with that matching ID and enter it; don’t reset Windows or change firmware settings as a first step. A single prompt can follow a Secure Boot update, while a prompt on every restart may point to a persistent boot-configuration issue. The screen alone does not prove the update damaged the drive.

Why BitLocker may ask after an update

BitLocker checks startup measurements to decide whether it can unlock an encrypted drive automatically. Changes to Windows, firmware, or hardware can alter those measurements and trigger its recovery check. The recovery key is a unique 48-digit number, not evidence by itself of a failed update or malicious access. Microsoft explains how BitLocker recovery works.

For some Secure Boot updates, firmware may not report the updated Secure Boot values during the first boot. Microsoft documents that this mismatch can cause a one-time recovery prompt; after entering the key, subsequent starts may work normally. That explanation does not apply automatically to every recovery screen. See Microsoft’s Secure Boot troubleshooting guidance.

Find and enter the matching recovery key

  1. Record the recovery-key ID. Note its first eight digits from the recovery screen. The ID helps distinguish the key needed for this recovery event from other keys saved to your accounts or devices.
  2. Check the personal Microsoft account. On another device, visit aka.ms/myrecoverykey and sign in to the account used on the locked PC. If Windows 11 version 24H2 or later is showing the recovery screen, it may display a hint of the Microsoft account associated with the key.
  3. Check a work or school account if relevant. Visit aka.ms/aadrecovery, or contact the organization’s IT team. The key may have been saved under the account of the person who originally configured the computer.
  4. Look for offline backups. Check any printout or USB drive used when BitLocker was set up. Match the saved key’s ID to the one on screen, then enter the corresponding 48-digit number.

Microsoft Support cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. Check Microsoft’s recovery-key guidance before considering actions that could erase data.

What to do if the prompt returns

It appeared once, and Windows now starts normally

If the prompt followed Secure Boot servicing and does not return after you enter the key, firmware’s first-boot measurements may have caused a temporary mismatch. Check the PC maker’s support information for a relevant firmware update. Avoid making unrelated firmware changes just because the first prompt appeared.

It appears on every restart

One possible cause is PXE or network boot being ahead of Windows Boot Manager in firmware boot order. If the PC tries network boot, fails, then starts Windows locally, the change in Secure Boot trust chain can lead BitLocker to request recovery again. Microsoft’s guidance describes placing Windows Boot Manager first or disabling PXE if it is not needed. If network boot is required, an administrator may need to use a compatible 2023-signed loader.

It is an organization-managed PC with a specific TPM/PCR7 policy

Microsoft has documented a narrowly conditioned first-restart prompt tied to particular TPM platform-validation Group Policy and PCR7 configurations, including cases where PCR7 binding is reported as “Not Possible,” the Windows UEFI CA 2023 certificate is available, and a boot-manager transition is pending. Microsoft’s April 14, 2026 Windows 11 update notes say the key is needed once in that scenario if the policy remains unchanged. The conditions are specific and should not be assumed to affect ordinary unmanaged PCs. Read the Windows 11 update note.

Microsoft also described the constrained issue for Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 in its July 14, 2026 note, with update and administrator guidance. Its August 11, 2026 Windows 10 note, updated September 8, repeats the limited scenario and says Secure Boot certificate updates continue rolling out. These release notes concern the named editions and configurations, not all Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs. An administrator should check the applicable note and current guidance rather than applying registry edits or BitLocker commands indiscriminately. Windows 10 July update note; Windows 10 August update note.

If you cannot find the key

For an organization-managed device, contact IT. For a personal PC, check every likely Microsoft account, the account of the person who set up the device, and any printout or USB backup before proceeding. If the key is unavailable and the change that triggered recovery cannot be undone, a Windows recovery reset may be necessary. Microsoft warns that a reset removes files, so treat it as a last resort rather than a way to locate or reconstruct the key.

Back up the key after regaining access

Once Windows starts, verify that a recovery-key backup exists and that you can identify it. Microsoft lists a Microsoft account, a work or school account, a USB drive, a plain-text file, and a printout as backup options. Keep a USB backup or printout away from the PC so it remains available if the device cannot start. A USB drive cannot recover a key that was never saved to it. See Microsoft’s backup guidance.
