Bitcoin miners should recheck their numbers before the next retarget. A forecast cited by Binance News put the adjustment near 16 October 2026 at +5.68%. If that increase occurs while the bitcoin price, 3.125 BTC subsidy and transaction-fee income stay unchanged, expected revenue per unit of hashrate will fall by roughly the same percentage. An older or inefficient ASIC could then earn less in bitcoin value than it spends on electricity.

The forecast is not a guarantee. Difficulty estimates move as additional blocks are mined, and your result also depends on the local tariff, pool fees, uptime, cooling and hosting charges.

What the next Bitcoin difficulty adjustment changes

Retargeting happens every 2,016 blocks

Bitcoin aims to produce one block every 10 minutes, or about two weeks for 2,016 blocks. Every 2,016 blocks, the protocol uses timestamps in the first and last block headers of that period to measure how long the interval actually took. If blocks arrived faster than two weeks, the network raises difficulty; if they arrived more slowly, it lowers difficulty, subject to the protocol’s adjustment limits.

A difficulty change does not directly alter the block subsidy. It changes the amount of hashing work statistically required to win a share of the same subsidy and transaction fees. With bitcoin’s price, subsidy and fees held constant, a higher difficulty means fewer expected satoshis for each terahash per second (TH/s).

The current snapshot and forecast

A 15 October 2026 Satoshi Gazette calculation reported 47.62 satoshis per TH/s per day at difficulty 132.716T. The calculation used the current 3.125 BTC block subsidy and fees from the trailing 144 blocks. It is an expected network rate, not a guaranteed amount that a mining pool will pay every day.

Binance News cited a near-term estimate of a 5.68% increase around 16 October 2026. Because the estimate can change before the retarget, treat it as a planning scenario rather than a settled network value.

How a 5.68% rise affects expected mining income

Under otherwise identical conditions, divide the current expected hashprice by 1.0568:

47.62 sats/TH/s/day ÷ 1.0568 ≈ 45.06 sats/TH/s/day

That would reduce expected output by about 2.56 sats per TH/s per day. For a 200 TH/s machine, the same simplified calculation changes expected production from about 9,524 sats per day to about 9,012 sats per day. These are statistical estimates before pool fees, downtime, rejected shares, electricity, cooling and other operating costs.

Item Before a 5.68% increase After a 5.68% increase, if all else is unchanged
Difficulty assumption 132.716T snapshot Approximately 5.68% higher than the snapshot
Expected hashprice 47.62 sats/TH/s/day Approximately 45.06 sats/TH/s/day
Expected output from 200 TH/s Approximately 9,524 sats/day Approximately 9,012 sats/day

Antminer S21 as a concrete benchmark

Bitmain specifies the SHA-256 Antminer S21 at 200 TH/s, 3,500 W at the wall and 17.5 J/TH at 25°C. The published figures are typical values; actual draw and hashrate can vary with operating conditions.

At 3,500 W, the machine uses approximately 84 kWh per 24-hour day:

3.5 kW × 24 hours = 84 kWh

Electricity tariff Illustrative daily electricity cost for 84 kWh
$0.05/kWh $4.20
$0.08/kWh $6.72
$0.12/kWh $10.08

To finish the calculation, convert the machine’s expected satoshi output to currency using the current bitcoin price, then subtract the applicable pool fee, hosting charge, cooling overhead and downtime allowance. Do not treat the table’s electricity figures as profit or loss by themselves.

An illustrative sensitivity case

Binance News described a 20 J/TH machine at $0.08/kWh as moving from a $1.37 daily electricity cushion to an approximately $0.77 daily shortfall per PH/s under the projected adjustment, assuming other variables stayed constant. This is an example of sensitivity to difficulty, not a universal break-even threshold for every 20 J/TH miner.

What to compare before deciding to keep a rig online

Evaluate the following inputs together after each material difficulty, bitcoin-price or fee change:

  • Efficiency: joules per TH/s. Lower J/TH generally means less electricity for the same hashrate.
  • Measured wall draw: include the power supply and any control hardware, and verify it with a high-load meter where safe.
  • All-in tariff: include demand charges, taxes and time-of-use rates if they apply.
  • Pool fee and payout method: expected hashprice is not the same as the amount credited to your account.
  • Uptime: account for outages, maintenance, thermal throttling and rejected shares.
  • Cooling and hosting: fans, ventilation, immersion equipment, rent and management fees can turn a small surplus into a loss.
  • Repair risk and capital recovery: a machine that is marginally profitable may not repay its purchase cost before its economics deteriorate.

A practical shutdown decision process

  1. Record actual operating data. Log 24-hour hashrate, wall watts, temperature, rejected shares and pool payouts for several representative days.
  2. Update the network assumptions. Replace the forecast with the confirmed difficulty, current bitcoin price, current subsidy and recent fee conditions once available.
  3. Calculate gross revenue. Multiply expected sats/TH/s/day by your machine’s effective hashrate, then convert to your accounting currency.
  4. Subtract recurring costs. Deduct pool fees, electricity, cooling, hosting, internet and a realistic downtime allowance.
  5. Run a downside case. Test a lower bitcoin price, another difficulty increase and a temporary rise in fees or electricity rates.
  6. Choose an operating state. Keep the rig online if the margin remains positive after realistic costs; underclock or run only during cheaper tariff hours if that improves the margin; shut it down when the expected margin is persistently negative and no operational change reverses it.

Why the result can change quickly

Difficulty is only one variable. A bitcoin-price rise can offset a difficulty increase, while falling transaction fees can reduce revenue even if difficulty is unchanged. Pool luck causes short-term payout variation around the expected rate, and a machine’s real wall draw can differ from its nameplate specification. For that reason, calculate with a multi-day or multi-week average rather than a single payout or a single block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most defensible conclusion before the retarget is conditional: the projected increase raises the probability that high-cost rigs become power-negative, but no source establishes a guaranteed post-adjustment loss for a particular miner without that miner’s tariff, measured draw, fees, uptime and current bitcoin valuation.
