The hidden danger is distributional, not technological: an AI-linked rise in Bitcoin or other asset prices could make existing owners wealthier while workers who depend mainly on paychecks receive little of the new income. AI can increase output and living standards, but the result depends on who owns the capital, who can use the systems and how quickly workers’ bargaining power and job quality improve.

No source currently establishes a particular Bitcoin rally, its size or a causal link between Bitcoin’s performance and AI investment. The rally is therefore a framing device for a broader question: what happens when machine-driven productivity and asset values rise faster than labor income?

The real risk is a wider gap between asset gains and paychecks

If AI makes companies more productive, the additional value can flow through several channels. Firms may keep it as profit, investors may receive higher share prices or other capital gains, highly skilled employees may earn more, and customers may receive lower prices. Workers can benefit too, but their share is not automatic.

Bitcoin makes the issue especially visible because a price increase pays people who already hold the asset. It does not, by itself, raise hourly pay, create jobs or spread ownership. If investors treat AI as a powerful source of future profits and bid up scarce assets, the people with the largest portfolios can gain even while wage-dependent households see no comparable improvement.

How AI gains can move from labor to capital

Channel What changes Who is positioned to gain
Labor income Higher productivity can support raises, new occupations or better jobs. Workers with scarce skills, bargaining power or access to advanced systems.
Capital income Automation can reduce costs and increase profits, dividends and asset valuations. Owners of companies, financial assets and other appreciating property.
Consumer gains More output or lower production costs can reduce prices or improve services. Households that can access the products; the benefit is larger when competition passes savings through.
Market power Large firms with data, computing capacity and financing can adopt earlier and scale faster. Dominant firms and their investors, unless competition and access spread the technology.

The distribution turns on adoption decisions inside firms. If an employer uses AI to complement workers, productivity can support higher output and potentially better pay. If it uses AI mainly to replace expensive tasks, the immediate saving may accrue to owners. When many firms make that choice at once, labor’s share of national income can fall even if total production rises.

Why inequality can worsen even when AI raises wages for some people

A 2025 International Monetary Fund model of the United Kingdom captures a tension that simple “robots versus jobs” stories miss. AI can substitute for some tasks performed by high-income workers, which may compress measured wage inequality. Yet high-income workers are also more likely to perform tasks that complement AI, to have access to the best tools and to own risky assets that appreciate when profits rise.

The model allows firms to choose whether and how much to adopt AI. When automation lowers the cost of high-wage tasks, those savings can encourage additional adoption. The resulting productivity gains may increase wealth inequality even when the wage distribution looks less unequal.

The Federal Reserve has described a similar risk: large, highly capitalized firms may capture a disproportionate share of AI gains, reducing labor’s share of income, while highly educated workers benefit from skill-biased technical change. In the words of Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr, the policy challenge is to ensure that gains are shared “across workers, households, and communities, rather than accruing to a small group of firms and investors.”

Who is exposed to AI—and who can capture the upside?

Exposure is not the same as job loss. It does, however, determine who must adapt and who may gain leverage from the technology.

  • In the IMF’s UK-based analysis, about 60% of workers at the 90th income percentile were in occupations where a large share of tasks could be performed by AI, compared with 15% at the 10th percentile. Higher-paid workers therefore face substantial exposure, but they are also more likely to work in roles where AI complements judgment, management or specialized knowledge.
  • U.S. income and wealth ownership are already concentrated. The Federal Reserve reported that the highest-earning fifth received 52% of household income in 2024, while the bottom fifth received 3%.
  • The same Federal Reserve distributional data show the bottom half of U.S. households held less than 3% of wealth, compared with 59% for the top tenth and 15% for the top 0.1%. A rise in assets held mainly by wealthier households therefore produces unequal gains even before employers decide how to share productivity improvements.

These figures do not prove that AI caused existing inequality or that Bitcoin holders are concentrated in exactly the same way. They establish why an asset-price boom can have a very different distribution from a broad rise in wages.

AI may augment jobs rather than eliminate them

The counterargument matters. The International Labour Organization concludes that AI is more likely to augment human capabilities in many occupations than to produce widespread automation. Effects vary by occupation, gender and national income level. A separate Bank for International Settlements occupational model distinguishes exposure, substitution and complementarity instead of treating every exposed job as doomed.

Augmentation can still produce a distribution problem. An AI assistant may let one experienced employee handle more customers, but the employer might respond by expanding the business, raising that employee’s pay, hiring more people—or keeping the savings as profit. The technology changes what is possible; institutions and bargaining determine who receives the result.

What cross-country evidence says about labor’s share

A Bank for International Settlements study covering 86 countries from 2010 through 2019 found that greater AI investment was associated with a higher income share for the top decile, a lower share for the bottom decile, a shift toward high-skill and managerial jobs, and a decline in labor’s income share.

This is an association, not proof that AI investment alone caused each country’s outcome. Other forces—including industry structure, education, competition and macroeconomic conditions—also matter. The result nonetheless matches the mechanism that makes an AI-linked asset rally politically and economically sensitive: productivity can rise while the slice paid to labor shrinks.

Does a Bitcoin rally benefit workers or mainly asset owners?

Bitcoin’s price is a market valuation, not a payroll statistic. If an AI boom increases demand for Bitcoin, the first recipients of the gain are holders who sell at higher prices or retain a more valuable balance. Workers without meaningful exposure to the asset receive no direct capital gain.

There can be indirect effects. Wealthier holders may spend more, companies may invest against higher expected returns, and tax receipts could support public programs. Those effects depend on how gains are realized, taxed and spent; a price chart alone cannot show them. Nor does the available evidence establish that AI investment is currently driving Bitcoin’s price.

How to tell whether an AI-linked asset boom is broad-based

Readers evaluating claims about a Bitcoin or AI rally should look beyond the headline price and check whether the following move together:

  • Labor income: real wages, hours, employment and the labor share of national income.
  • Job quality: training access, stability, autonomy and whether workers share in productivity gains.
  • Ownership: whether households outside the top wealth groups participate in the appreciating assets.
  • Access to AI: whether smaller firms, schools and workers can use capable systems or whether access is limited to heavily financed companies.
  • Competition: whether lower costs reach customers and suppliers or are retained as monopoly rents.
  • Transition support: retraining, income protection and mobility for workers whose tasks change.

If asset values rise while these measures stagnate, the rally is enriching capital owners faster than it is improving broad living standards.

What policies determine who gets the gains?

Barr has pointed to education, job training, workforce development, competition policy and tax policy as areas that can influence how AI’s benefits are shared. The practical objective is not to prevent useful automation. It is to widen access to the tools and skills that make workers complementary with AI, preserve competitive markets and give displaced workers time and resources to move.

That agenda also addresses a second risk Barr identified: firms and employees with access to ever-improving AI resources may pull away from those without it, creating a widening productivity gap. Broad access, credible training and enforceable competition rules can reduce that divergence; none is guaranteed by a rising asset price.

The test for this Bitcoin-and-AI thesis

The thesis is not that AI must cause mass unemployment or that Bitcoin cannot rise. It is that machine-driven productivity and capital appreciation can coexist with weak pay growth. The decisive evidence will be whether labor income, job quality and access to productive AI improve alongside asset values. If they do not, a rally can signal successful wealth creation for existing owners while masking a poorer distribution of the gains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI reduce wage inequality while increasing wealth inequality?

Yes. AI may substitute for some high-paid tasks and narrow measured wage gaps, while complementary skills and rising asset values disproportionately benefit people who already own capital.

Does a higher Bitcoin price show that AI’s gains are reaching households broadly?

No. A Bitcoin price increase directly benefits holders. Broader distribution requires evidence of rising labor income, wider ownership or public spending that converts gains into shared benefits.

Is AI adoption equivalent to mass unemployment?

No. The ILO and BIS analyses distinguish augmentation, substitution and complementarity. Many jobs may change rather than disappear, although the income split within those jobs can still shift toward capital.
