Bitcoin’s largest holders are increasing exposure ahead of the September US Consumer Price Index release, even as US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $744.3 million in net withdrawals from October 5 through October 12, 2026. The split leaves Bitcoin dependent on whether whale buying can withstand weak institutional flows, aggressive futures selling and a potentially market-moving inflation surprise.
What the latest data shows
CryptoQuant data cited by CryptoSlate puts large-holder balances at 3.03 million BTC. The 30-day growth rate reached its fastest monthly pace since February 11, and the annual change in whale holdings moved back toward positive territory after contracting since September 2025.
CryptoQuant’s Bull Score Index, another measure cited in the report, climbed from 20 in late July to 90 on September 26 before easing to 80. CryptoQuant considers a reading of 80 consistent with an emerging bull market. Its whale measure excludes exchange and mining-pool addresses, so the figure is intended to track large holders outside those operational wallets rather than every major address in the ecosystem.
The accumulation is occurring while the ETF market is sending a weaker short-term signal. Farside Investors data cited by CryptoSlate recorded the following US spot Bitcoin ETF flows:

Bitcoin fell below $81,000 during the withdrawal period. On October 13, Fidelity’s FBTC attracted $103.1 million and BlackRock’s IBIT attracted $65.9 million, accounting for most of the reported rebound. That inflow reduced the seven-session net withdrawal figure to $568.6 million, but one positive session cannot establish a lasting return of institutional demand.
Why whale accumulation and ETF selling can happen together
Whale balances and ETF flows describe different parts of the market. A large holder can add through direct spot purchases, private transactions or collateralized borrowing without creating an ETF inflow. Conversely, ETF redemptions can reflect portfolio rebalancing, profit-taking or risk reduction rather than a decision by every institutional investor to abandon Bitcoin.

The time frame also matters. CryptoQuant’s longer-term estimate cited by the report is approximately $1.5 billion in net ETF inflows for 2026, despite a year-to-date deficit of $5.1 billion in early July. That estimate does not erase the October withdrawals; it shows why short-term flows and a broader annual trend can point in different directions.
Borrowing is rising among the biggest Bitcoin-backed borrowers
CoinRabbit data cited by CryptoSlate shows that customers with more than $10 million in Bitcoin-backed loans increased USDT borrowing by 83.3% in September. Borrowing among customers with less than $100,000 in loans fell 17.2%.

The size-based divergence may indicate that larger borrowers are willing to add leverage or preserve liquidity while smaller borrowers are becoming more cautious. It does not prove that borrowed USDT was used to buy Bitcoin. The funds could have supported operating expenses, other investments, margin requirements or personal liquidity, so borrowing should be treated as a positioning clue rather than direct purchase evidence.
Derivatives show aggressive selling despite improving network capital
Glassnode data cited in the report records a negative $681.8 million cumulative volume delta in perpetual futures. A negative perpetual-futures cumulative volume delta indicates that aggressive market orders were predominantly selling rather than lifting offers.

At the same time, monthly realized-capitalization growth improved to 1.2% from 1.1%. Realized capitalization values coins according to the price at which they last moved, so growth suggests additional capital is entering the network or that existing supply is changing hands at higher realized prices. The combination is mixed: derivatives traders were selling aggressively, while the realized-capitalization measure was still expanding.

The September CPI report is the immediate macro catalyst because it can change expectations for Treasury yields and Federal Reserve policy ahead of the Fed’s October 27–28 meeting. Reuters-surveyed economists expected headline September CPI to be 3.6%, up from 3.4% in August, and core CPI to be 2.5%, up from 2.4%.

If inflation is hotter than expected
A hotter reading could keep Treasury yields elevated and strengthen expectations that monetary policy will remain restrictive. Higher yields can make non-yielding assets less attractive and add pressure to Bitcoin ETF demand and leveraged derivatives positions. In that case, whale accumulation would be facing a less favorable macro backdrop, and forced deleveraging could amplify a decline.
If inflation is softer than expected
A softer reading could reduce yield pressure and make it easier for investors to rebuild Bitcoin exposure. ETF subscriptions could recover, short positions could be closed and the improving realized-capitalization trend could receive confirmation from spot demand. This is a conditional market path, not a prediction of the CPI result.

The report cites several levels that traders may use to judge whether the market is absorbing selling or regaining momentum:

Holding the $81,000–$81,250 area would show that buyers are defending the region where the recent decline found support. A move through both resistance bands would provide stronger evidence that demand is returning; rejection below them would leave the ETF and futures weakness unresolved.
How to read the conflicting signals
- Whale accumulation versus ETF flows: rising large-holder balances are constructive, but the $744.3 million withdrawal period shows that immediate fund demand was negative.
- Spot demand versus perpetual futures: realized-capitalization growth is improving, while the negative $681.8 million perpetual-futures cumulative volume delta shows active derivatives selling.
- Borrowing versus buying: larger borrowers increased USDT loans, but loan proceeds cannot be assumed to have been invested in Bitcoin.
- Short term versus longer term: the October withdrawals contrast with CryptoQuant’s approximately $1.5 billion 2026 net-inflow estimate.
- Inflation direction versus policy expectations: the market reaction will depend on how the CPI result compares with expectations and what it implies for yields and the Federal Reserve.
What to watch after the CPI release
- Compare headline and core CPI with the 3.6% and 2.5% forecasts, respectively, rather than judging the headline number in isolation.
- Track Treasury-yield and rate-expectation changes immediately after the release.
- Check whether spot Bitcoin ETFs record several consecutive inflow sessions instead of another single-day rebound.
- Watch whether Bitcoin holds $81,000–$81,250 or reclaims the $85,000–$85,500 and $86,500–$86,750 resistance zones.
- Look for a reduction in aggressive perpetual-futures selling alongside continued realized-capitalization growth.
The central issue is therefore not whether whales are buying—they are, according to CryptoQuant’s balance data—but whether that buying is large and persistent enough to offset ETF redemptions, derivatives selling and any yield shock triggered by the inflation report.
