For preserving a nominal U.S.-dollar value while Bitcoin is falling, a fiat-referenced stablecoin is generally the better fit—but only conditionally. Bitcoin’s market price can move sharply in either direction. A stablecoin is designed to track a reference currency, usually the U.S. dollar, yet its peg can weaken or fail when reserves, banking access, redemption, liquidity, governance or operations come under stress. Neither asset guarantees principal, purchasing power or an exit at a particular price.
First define what “preserving value” means
This comparison uses nominal U.S.-dollar value as the measure: how many dollars the asset can reasonably be exchanged for during a market drop. That is different from preserving purchasing power. A token that remains near one dollar can still lose real value if consumer prices rise, and Bitcoin’s dollar price does not by itself measure whether it keeps pace with inflation over a chosen period.
The time horizon also matters. Someone trying to avoid a short-term drawdown has a different problem from someone saving for years, seeking income or diversifying away from the banking system. The answer below addresses the narrow question in the title: what is generally more likely to hold a dollar reference while Bitcoin markets are selling off?

The direct comparison: different risks, not the same kind of safety
| Question | Bitcoin | Fiat-referenced stablecoin |
|---|---|---|
| What is intended to determine the price? | Supply and demand for a freely traded cryptoasset. | A reference to a currency, commonly the U.S. dollar, supported by an issuer’s reserve and redemption structure. |
| Main risk during a Bitcoin sell-off | Market-price loss caused by volatility and changing expectations. | Loss of the peg, delayed or unavailable redemption, impaired reserves, banking disruption or thin secondary-market liquidity. |
| Does it promise one dollar? | No. | The design objective may be a one-dollar reference, but a market peg is not a guarantee of price or redemption. |
| What can the holder verify? | Market price and network transactions are visible, but future price is not predictable. | The holder must assess reserve quality, disclosure, verification, legal redemption rights, counterparties and operational resilience. |
| Typical source of return | Change in Bitcoin’s market price. | Usually little or no automatic price appreciation; any offered yield is a separate credit, lending or activity risk. |
So the conditional verdict is straightforward: if the objective is to keep a balance close to a dollar during a Bitcoin drawdown, the stablecoin’s design is better aligned with that objective. It is not automatically safer in every crisis, because it replaces direct market-price risk with issuer, reserve, redemption, liquidity, banking and operational risk.

Why Bitcoin can lose value quickly in a market drop
Bitcoin has no contractual exchange rate to the dollar. Its price is set by trading in open markets, where leverage, forced liquidations, changing risk appetite, macroeconomic news, regulation and expectations can reinforce one another. A rise can therefore be followed by a steep decline without any mechanism that pulls the price back to a fixed reference.
An SEC-filed Bitcoin Trust annual report describes the pattern directly: “Bitcoin has historically exhibited high price volatility relative to more traditional asset classes.” The same risk disclosure discusses repeated steep drawdowns, including the 2021–2022 period. That statement is a description of historical behavior, not a forecast of the next move and not a matched loss statistic against stablecoins.
Holding Bitcoin through a drop can still be rational for an investor whose goal is long-term exposure to Bitcoin and who accepts large interim losses. It does not, however, preserve a predetermined dollar amount. Selling during a panic can also convert a temporary market loss into a realized one, while waiting exposes the holder to further price movement. The asset’s monetary design does not remove that decision.
How a stablecoin is supposed to hold a reference value
A fiat-referenced stablecoin generally combines three elements:
- A reference currency: for example, a token intended to track one U.S. dollar.
- Backing or a stabilization mechanism: reserves, collateral, or another structure intended to support the reference value.
- A route to liquidity or redemption: the ability for authorized participants or holders to exchange the token for the expected amount, directly or through markets.
The target is not the same as a guaranteed exchange rate. In secondary markets, the token can trade above or below its reference. Confidence that the issuer can and will honor redemptions is part of what keeps arbitrage and market trading near the target. If that confidence weakens, the price can move even when the issuer continues to describe the token as “stable.”

What can cause a depeg
- Reserve uncertainty: holders cannot establish that assets are sufficient, liquid or available when needed.
- Banking or custodian exposure: a reserve bank, payment provider or custodian becomes inaccessible or fails.
- Redemption friction: eligibility rules, processing delays, fees, limited hours or jurisdictional restrictions prevent timely conversion.
- Market liquidity stress: too few buyers or sellers are available at the reference price.
- Operational or technical failure: an issuer, blockchain, smart contract, exchange or settlement system is unavailable.
- Loss of confidence: holders rush to exit before others, making a small discount self-reinforcing.
These risks can appear precisely when a Bitcoin decline increases demand for a perceived safe settlement asset. A token may be heavily used as a trading quote while its own redemption channels are under pressure.
What real depeg events show
Stablecoin stability is an objective, not proof that every token will remain at its target in a crisis. An SEC filing recounts that USDC traded below $1 for multiple days after Circle disclosed on March 10, 2023 that $3.3 billion of its reserves were held at Silicon Valley Bank. The filing also recounts TerraUSD’s depeg in May 2022. These events demonstrate that a token marketed or designed around a dollar reference can depart from that reference when confidence, reserves, banking access or the stabilization mechanism is challenged.

Those are historical settlements as described in the filing; they are not evidence of present-day reserve composition or a current judgment about any particular token.
No single event establishes how every stablecoin will behave in a future sell-off. The useful lesson is narrower: a dollar label does not eliminate counterparty and market-structure risk. A buyer must evaluate the specific token, issuer, jurisdiction and redemption arrangements.
Reserve and redemption checks that matter most
The Basel Framework’s redemption-risk test says: “The objective of this test is to ensure that the reserve assets are sufficient to enable the cryptoassets to be redeemable at all times for the peg value, including during periods of extreme stress.” This is a supervisory criterion for arrangements within the framework’s scope, not a universal consumer guarantee and not proof that a particular token complies.

Use the following questions when comparing stablecoins:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. What exactly is the reference currency?
Confirm whether the token targets one U.S. dollar, another national currency or a different unit. A dollar-referenced token can still fluctuate against your home currency, and a token tied to a currency does not protect against inflation in that currency.
2. What assets back the token?
Look for the reserve categories, maturity, liquidity and legal ownership. High-quality liquid assets are easier to sell or deliver during stress than opaque, long-dated or difficult-to-value assets. A reserve figure without a description of where the assets sit and who controls them is incomplete.
3. How often are reserves disclosed and independently verified?
Check the date, scope and methodology of attestations or audits. A disclosure can describe balances at one point in time; it does not by itself prove that every holder can redeem simultaneously during a run.
4. Who can redeem, and under what terms?
Read the legal terms for eligibility, minimum amounts, fees, processing times, supported jurisdictions and suspension rights. A token that trades near one dollar but cannot be redeemed by you when needed still carries substantial exit risk.

5. Which banks, custodians and payment rails are involved?
Concentration in one bank, custodian, chain, exchange or settlement provider creates a single point of failure. Determine whether a disruption would merely slow transfers or prevent redemption altogether.
6. How deep is secondary-market liquidity?
Check whether the token trades on multiple venues and whether there are reliable markets in the amount and currency you need. A quoted price is less useful when order books are shallow and spreads widen during stress.
7. What oversight applies in your jurisdiction?
Regulatory status, disclosures and redemption rights differ by country and by product. The Basel criteria are designed for applicable institutional arrangements; they should not be read as a blanket retail protection scheme.
A practical decision framework
| Your objective | Usually better aligned | Why | Risk you still accept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep a trading balance close to a dollar during a Bitcoin sell-off | A well-documented fiat-referenced stablecoin | Its design targets a currency value rather than open-ended price appreciation or decline. | Depeg, redemption, reserve, liquidity, issuer and platform risk. |
| Seek long-term exposure to Bitcoin’s potential upside | Bitcoin | Only Bitcoin provides direct exposure to Bitcoin’s market price. | Sharp drawdowns, volatility and no fixed-dollar exit value. |
| Hold an emergency reserve that must be available in national currency | Neither automatically | A bank deposit or other regulated cash equivalent may fit the objective better, depending on jurisdiction and protections. | Bank, inflation, access and jurisdictional risks still require review. |
| Earn a return on idle stablecoin balances | Evaluate the yield arrangement separately | Yield may come from lending, market activity or another risk-bearing program, not from the peg itself. | Borrower, platform, liquidity and loss-of-principal risk. |
The table is a decision aid, not a recommendation of a specific token or service. “Stablecoin” is a category, not a uniform risk rating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy stablecoin yield is not peg protection
A centralized exchange or other platform may advertise a yield on stablecoin balances. That payment does not insure the peg and does not guarantee redemption. BIS material distinguishes reserve-based remuneration from activity-based models; activity-based yields can be more volatile because they depend on trading, lending or other revenue-producing activity.

Before accepting a yield, identify who owes you the money, whether your balance remains redeemable on demand, whether assets can be rehypothecated, what happens in a withdrawal pause and whether losses are shared with customers. A higher advertised rate can compensate you for taking risks that are unrelated to the token’s intended dollar reference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Bitcoin and stablecoins can affect each other
It is misleading to treat the two assets as isolated. Stablecoins are widely used as trading and settlement instruments in crypto markets. A run on a stablecoin, a reserve disclosure, an operational outage or a loss of confidence can reduce market liquidity and affect Bitcoin prices. Conversely, a Bitcoin crash can trigger rapid stablecoin conversions, withdrawals and demand for the perceived safety of dollars.
This linkage means that moving from Bitcoin into a stablecoin reduces one type of exposure but does not remove crypto-market infrastructure risk. If both assets are held on the same exchange, in the same wallet controlled by a failed provider or on a congested network, the common point of failure can matter more than the asset labels.

What to do before, during and after a market drop
Before the drop: write the objective
- State the amount you are trying to keep near a dollar and the date or event by which you may need it.
- Decide whether you need actual bank dollars, a transferable token or long-term Bitcoin exposure. Do not use those objectives interchangeably.
- For any stablecoin under consideration, record its reference currency, reserve description, latest disclosure date, redemption terms, supported jurisdictions and main counterparties.
- Check how you would exit if the primary exchange, bank, blockchain or issuer were unavailable.
- Set a custody limit. Keeping all assets with one exchange, wallet provider, bank or chain creates concentration risk even when the token itself appears sound.
During the drop: verify instead of chasing the screen price
- Compare the token’s price across more than one liquid market and distinguish a temporary spread from a broad loss of the peg.
- Read issuer, custodian and banking announcements for reserve or redemption interruptions.
- Check whether withdrawals, redemptions and blockchain transfers are functioning, not merely whether trading is open.
- Avoid assuming that a yield, exchange balance or displayed account value is cash-equivalent while withdrawals are paused.
- If you must transact, account for wider spreads, network fees, confirmation delays and the possibility that the quoted price changes before settlement.
After the drop: reconcile what you actually own
- Confirm the final settlement asset and amount, rather than relying on an unrealized account valuation.
- Review transaction records, fees and any conversion rate used.
- Reassess whether the chosen token’s reserve disclosures, redemption access and counterparties still match your original objective.
- Update the written plan; a one-time successful exit does not prove that the structure will work in the next stress event.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- “Stable” means risk-free. It means the design targets lower price variation against a reference currency. It does not promise a market price, redemption time or purchasing-power floor.
- A one-dollar quote proves one-dollar backing. Secondary-market price and reserve quality are separate questions. Review disclosures and legal terms.
- A reserve total is enough. Composition, liquidity, custody, encumbrances and access during stress determine whether assets can support redemptions.
- Past depegs only matter to old tokens. They show that the mechanism can fail under pressure; they do not identify which future token will fail.
- Moving to a stablecoin removes all crypto risk. Issuer, bank, custodian, exchange, blockchain and liquidity dependencies may remain.
- Yield makes a stablecoin safer. Return and protection are different. Activity-based remuneration can add volatility and counterparty exposure.
- Bitcoin’s historical volatility gives a precise forecast. The SEC disclosure is qualitative. There is no matched contemporary dataset here that supports a universal percentage loss comparison or a “safe” threshold.
- Nominal stability equals real stability. A token near one dollar can still lose purchasing power against inflation or fluctuate against your local currency.
Answers to the questions readers usually ask
Do stablecoins lose value when Bitcoin crashes?
They can. A stablecoin may remain close to its reference currency, trade at a premium or discount, or suffer a more serious depeg. The outcome depends on its reserves, redemption access, market liquidity, counterparties and operational resilience—not simply on Bitcoin’s direction.
Can a stablecoin depeg during a market crash?
Yes. The USDC episode described in an SEC filing and the TerraUSD depeg described there show that actual market events can push a token away from its intended value. A crash can increase the pressure on banking and redemption channels that support the peg.
Is holding a dollar stablecoin safer than holding Bitcoin during a sell-off?
For the narrow goal of reducing direct dollar-price volatility, a properly functioning fiat-referenced stablecoin is generally better aligned. It is not universally safer because the holder accepts issuer, reserve, redemption, liquidity, custody and operational risks that Bitcoin does not package in the same way.
Should I use Bitcoin or a stablecoin for money I cannot afford to lose?
Neither should be treated as a guaranteed cash substitute. Match the asset to the legal protections, access requirements, time horizon and loss tolerance of the money involved, and verify the specific product’s terms rather than relying on the category name.
Bottom line
Bitcoin is a volatile market asset; it has no dollar peg and can experience steep drawdowns. A fiat-referenced stablecoin is designed to stay near its reference currency, so it is generally the more suitable of the two for preserving a nominal dollar value during a Bitcoin market drop. That conclusion holds only if the particular token has credible, liquid reserves, workable redemption rights, transparent disclosures, resilient operations and adequate market liquidity. A peg is an objective—not a guarantee—and neither asset guarantees purchasing power or principal.
