Neither Bitcoin nor stablecoins are a guaranteed safe place to hold value during volatile markets. Bitcoin can move sharply in price against the currency you spend. Stablecoins are designed to track a reference asset—often the U.S. dollar—but can lose their peg, and their reliability depends on the token’s reserves, issuer, redemption access, and market liquidity.

The better fit depends on what “holding value” means for you: which currency your expenses are in, how long you need to hold the funds, how much fluctuation you can accept, and how quickly you may need to spend or redeem them.

Bitcoin vs. stablecoins at a glance

Question Bitcoin Stablecoins
Intended value behavior No fiat peg. Its market price changes with supply and demand. Designed to track a reference asset, commonly USD. The specific mechanism varies by token.
Main value risks Price volatility against the currency you use for expenses. Peg deviations, reserve quality and liquidity, issuer and redemption risks, and market or technical disruption.
What happens under stress? Available evidence establishes volatility, not reliable protection during market stress. Research finds no general safe-haven behavior across the studied shocks; runs and peg breaks are possible.
What to examine Time horizon, price volatility, trading liquidity, custody, and whether you can tolerate losses. Token design, reserve disclosures, redemption terms and eligibility, reserve liquidity, secondary-market depth, network, and jurisdiction.

These categories are not interchangeable. Bitcoin exposes you primarily to market-price changes; a stablecoin adds risks tied to its peg, backing, issuer, and the practical ability to trade or redeem it.

Is Bitcoin or a stablecoin safer to hold when the market is volatile?

“Safer” depends on the risk you want to avoid. If your concern is a sharp price move against dollars, Bitcoin’s market volatility is directly relevant. The CFTC says virtual-currency values are derived from supply and demand and are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies. That describes a risk, not a forecast of Bitcoin’s future price. Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

A dollar-pegged stablecoin is designed to reduce that particular kind of price movement relative to USD, but it does not eliminate risk. Its market price can diverge from the peg, and the token may depend on reserves, an issuer, redemption arrangements, and functioning trading venues. If your expenses are in a currency other than USD, dollar tracking also does not guarantee a stable value in your spending currency.

Neither asset should be treated as a guaranteed hedge or risk-free store of value. Decide based on the currency you need, your holding period, your tolerance for price changes, and how soon you may need access to the funds.

What makes a stablecoin—and what can go wrong?

“Stablecoin” describes an intended behavior, not a uniform structure or guarantee. The SEC Division of Corporation Finance defines a stablecoin as a crypto asset designed to maintain a stable value relative to a reference asset, which may be fiat currency, a commodity, or a pool or basket of assets. Its April 4, 2025 statement addresses a narrower subset of USD-pegged tokens designed for one-for-one redemption and backed by reserves it describes as low-risk and readily liquid; it is not a universal legal ruling on every token or jurisdiction. Reserve-backed designs

For a reserve-backed token, examine what backs it, how liquid those assets are, what the issuer discloses, and who can redeem directly with the issuer. A token’s design goal does not itself establish that every holder is eligible for redemption or can access it promptly.

Crypto-collateralized and algorithmic designs

These structures can have different risks from fiat-reserve-backed tokens. In a 2024 model and case-study analysis, BIS Working Paper 1164 found that highly volatile collateral can leave par convertibility vulnerable to large negative shocks, even when initial reserve values are high. The paper’s authors note that its views do not necessarily represent those of the BIS or its member central banks. BIS Working Paper 1164: Public information and stablecoin runs

Peg price is not the same as redemption

A stablecoin’s secondary-market price can differ from its reference value. BIS Bulletin 108 reports that even fiat-backed stablecoins do not always trade exactly at par and that significant peg breaks have occurred. This is distinct from a holder’s contractual redemption rights and practical ability to redeem directly with an issuer. BIS Bulletin 108: Stablecoin growth – policy challenges and approaches

Do stablecoins or Bitcoin act as a safe haven?

Do not assume that either asset will protect value when other markets fall. A 2024 BIS working paper studying crypto-market and U.S. monetary-policy shocks found that stablecoins did not act as a safe haven from either type of shock in its analysis. That is a finding within the paper’s sample, method, and period—not a prediction about every token or future event. BIS Working Paper 1219: Stablecoins, money market funds and monetary policy

For Bitcoin, the CFTC’s warning about volatility supports caution, but it does not establish how Bitcoin will perform in any particular crisis. Past or expected behavior should not be treated as dependable protection for money you cannot afford to lose.

How to choose based on your holding needs

If you need value in a particular currency soon

Start with the currency of your upcoming expenses. A USD-pegged token is designed to track dollars, not every national currency or your future purchasing power. Check whether you can convert or redeem it where and when you need it, and account for fees, venue liquidity, and access restrictions.

If your time horizon is longer

Consider whether you can tolerate substantial price changes and whether the asset’s risks match your purpose. Bitcoin has no fiat peg; a stablecoin’s target is a reference price, not a guarantee of long-term purchasing power. For stablecoins, scrutinize reserve composition, disclosures, redemption terms, and mechanism rather than relying on the category name.

If immediate access matters

Check the actual route from holding to spending or cashing out: the exchange or service you would use, its liquidity, any redemption eligibility, and the relevant blockchain network. A token may be technically transferable while direct issuer redemption remains unavailable or impractical to you.

How do I hold crypto safely?

Custody and asset value are separate questions. A hardware wallet can help with private-key management for supported assets, but it cannot stabilize Bitcoin’s market price, guarantee a stablecoin issuer’s redemption, or insure holdings. If you choose self-custody, verify current support for the exact asset and network; some assets may require a compatible third-party wallet. Ledger: Supported Coins & Tokens
