Bitcoin (BTC) had deeper trading liquidity than Ethereum (ETH) in the latest cited centralized-exchange studies. CoinGecko’s 2026 comparison found substantially more BTC order-book depth across its selected exchanges. TokenInsight’s September 2026 sample also found lower BTC spot slippage for the reported large sell orders and tighter BTC spot spreads.
That is a sample-based conclusion, not a permanent rule for every exchange, pair, time, or order size. Liquidity changes constantly. A useful comparison must identify the market segment, venue, trading pair, order side, notional size, price band, and statistical method before treating one asset as easier to trade.
What the cited measurements show
The two most recent quantitative comparisons in scope point in the same direction, but they measure different aspects of liquidity and use different exchange samples.
| Study | Sample and period | BTC result | ETH result | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CoinGecko 2026 report | Eight selected centralized exchanges; report updated September 30, 2026 | Median cumulative depth of $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side at the report’s stated narrow range | $13–14 million median depth at its stated narrow range | BTC’s displayed book was materially deeper in this bounded comparison |
| TokenInsight, September 2026 | Nine selected exchanges; official API snapshots every 30 minutes from August 16 through September 14, 2026, UTC+8 | Lower and more stable spot slippage for the reported sizes; near-zero median and 0.007% P90 for a $100,000 sell on Binance | Binance had 0.002% median slippage for the reported $100,000 spot order; exact $500,000 ETH values were not stated | Execution-cost results favored BTC overall, while ETH still had very low slippage on the leading venue |
| TokenInsight spread comparison | Same selected-venue sample | 0.001 basis points on the tightest group of Binance, Bitget, MEXC, and HTX | 0.040 basis points on KuCoin; most other included exchanges were at 0.041 basis points | BTC had tighter quoted spreads in the reported sample |
CoinGecko also described its BTC depth as almost 50% higher than in its 2025 comparison. ETH depth in the 2026 comparison represented about 35–45% of BTC depth, compared with at least 60% in the prior-year comparison. Those percentages belong to CoinGecko’s specific methodology and should not be generalized to every market.

Why the depth figures need careful reading
Different price bands were used
CoinGecko measured BTC around a price range of approximately plus or minus $100 from the mid-price and ETH around approximately plus or minus $3. A depth figure is the value of resting bids or asks inside a chosen distance from the current mid-price. Because the dollar widths differ, the BTC and ETH amounts are the report’s own comparison rather than a perfectly identical price-band experiment.
Within that stated method, the median BTC book contained $29 million of buy-side liquidity and $37 million of sell-side liquidity across eight selected exchanges. ETH contained $13–14 million at its stated narrow range. Seven of the eight exchanges still had more than $1 million of ETH depth on each side, so the finding is not that ETH books were empty; it is that they were thinner than BTC books in the measured bands.
Depth is not a guarantee of execution
Displayed orders can be canceled, replaced, or consumed before your order reaches them. A published median or snapshot describes observed conditions during a particular sample, not the book you will see during a future price move. Depth can disappear especially quickly when markets become one-sided or volatile.

Order-book depth
Depth is the cumulative value or quantity of bids and asks within a specified distance from the mid-price. A narrow band answers, “How much can I trade very close to the current quote?” A wider band includes orders farther away and answers a different question: “How much can I trade before the price moves by this larger amount?” Always record the band alongside the dollar figure.
Bid-ask spread
The spread is the difference between the best ask and best bid. Crossing that gap is the immediate quoted cost of a marketable order before deeper levels of the book are considered. TokenInsight reported BTC spreads of 0.001 basis points for the tightest group of Binance, Bitget, MEXC, and HTX. Its narrowest ETH spread was 0.040 basis points on KuCoin, with most other included exchanges at 0.041 basis points.
A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. Therefore, 0.001 basis points is 0.00001%, while 0.040 basis points is 0.0004%. These unusually small reported values should be read exactly as venue-specific report outputs, not as a universal spread for the assets.

Slippage
Slippage estimates the difference between a reference price and the average execution price of a hypothetical order. It depends on notional size, direction, and the available book. A $100,000 sell and a $500,000 sell can have very different results even in the same pair a few seconds apart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMedian slippage describes the middle observation in a sample. A P90 figure means 90% of observations were at or below that level and 10% were worse. Looking at both prevents a single unusually favorable snapshot from hiding less typical fills.
Why volume alone is insufficient
Traded volume records completed transactions, but it does not tell you how much liquidity is resting near the price at the moment your order arrives. A market can print high volume while having shallow nearby bids or asks. Asset-level aggregations can also combine several instruments and exchanges, which answers a different question from the depth of one pair on one venue.
How TokenInsight’s execution results compare BTC and ETH
$100,000 spot sell orders
For BTC spot sell orders, TokenInsight reported near-zero median slippage and a 0.007% P90 on Binance at $100,000. The near-zero median indicates that the middle observation had almost no measured price impact in that sample; it does not mean every $100,000 BTC sale will execute at exactly the mid-price.
For ETH spot at the reported $100,000 size, Binance led with 0.002% median slippage. That is still a very small measured impact. The comparison therefore is not “BTC has no slippage and ETH has significant slippage.” Rather, the sample showed BTC’s distribution as lower and more stable overall, while ETH also performed efficiently on the leading venue.
$500,000 spot sell orders
At $500,000 for BTC, TokenInsight reported a 0.005% median slippage on MEXC and the best P90 of 0.018% on Binance. The report said differences among exchanges became more pronounced as order size increased. For ETH at $500,000, the report stated that Binance retained the lowest slippage, but it did not provide a comparable exact figure in the cited material.

That missing ETH number matters. You can say the report favored Binance for the larger ETH order and that cross-venue dispersion widened; you cannot calculate a precise BTC-versus-ETH percentage advantage from an unstated ETH value.
Why the spread and slippage results support, but do not prove, the depth result
Tighter spreads reduce the cost of crossing the top of the book, while low slippage indicates that a specified order did not travel far through available levels. Both observations are consistent with deeper BTC books in the sampled markets. Neither measurement proves that BTC will always produce a better fill: a different pair, quote currency, exchange, order side, or market event can reverse the result.
A fair BTC-versus-ETH comparison checklist
Before comparing two numbers, write down all of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Market segment: spot, margin, dated futures, or perpetual futures.
- Venue: the exact exchange or the defined group of exchanges.
- Pair and quote currency: for example, BTC/USDT and ETH/USDT are not interchangeable with BTC/USD and ETH/USD.
- Order direction: buy and sell liquidity are often asymmetric.
- Notional size: state the currency and amount, such as a $100,000 sell.
- Price band: specify the distance from the mid-price used for cumulative depth.
- Statistic: snapshot, mean, median, percentile, or worst observation.
- Observation window: include the date range and time zone.
- Aggregation: distinguish one pair on one venue from a cross-venue or cross-instrument total.
How to check liquidity before placing a trade
Published studies are useful context, but a live book should determine whether your order is practical now. Exchange interfaces differ, so labels may vary; the sequence below uses the common spot-market layout.
- Open the spot market: choose the exchange’s Markets or Trade area, then select the exact BTC or ETH pair and quote currency you intend to use.
- Confirm the market type: make sure the screen says Spot rather than Futures or Perpetual. Do not use a futures depth panel to estimate a spot fill.
- Set the order size: enter the intended notional in the order ticket or calculate the base-asset quantity. Check whether the interface shows quantity, notional value, or both.
- Inspect both sides of the book: note the best bid, best ask, cumulative bids, and cumulative asks. For a sell, focus on bids; for a buy, focus on asks.
- Estimate the volume-weighted average price: walk through successive levels until the full quantity is filled on paper. Compare that average with the mid-price to estimate expected slippage.
- Check spread and depth at several bands: record the top-of-book spread and cumulative value at narrow and wider distances. A book that looks deep at 0.1% may be thin at 0.03%.
- Refresh during volatile conditions: watch whether levels remain in place for several refreshes. If large orders vanish or the spread jumps, pause rather than relying on the first screenshot.
- Choose an execution method: use a limit order when price control is more important than immediate completion, or divide a marketable order into smaller pieces when the book cannot absorb it comfortably.
- Record the result: save the expected and actual average price, fees, filled quantity, and time. This creates a venue- and pair-specific record for future sizing decisions.
What the reported trade sizes imply
For a roughly $100,000 order
The TokenInsight sample suggests that a $100,000 BTC spot sell was absorbed with near-zero median impact on Binance and a 0.007% P90. A $100,000 ETH spot order on Binance also showed only 0.002% median slippage. For an order of this size, the practical question is less about the asset label and more about whether your selected pair currently resembles the sampled venue and whether the displayed book remains stable.
For a roughly $500,000 order
At $500,000, venue choice becomes more consequential. BTC’s reported median was 0.005% on MEXC, while Binance produced the best reported P90 at 0.018%. TokenInsight said ETH differences across exchanges became more pronounced and that Binance retained the lowest ETH slippage, without stating the exact ETH figure. A trader should therefore test the live book on the chosen venue instead of transferring BTC’s numerical result to ETH.

For orders larger than the published examples
Do not extrapolate linearly. Once an order consumes several visible levels, the next levels may be much farther away, and other traders may react to the displayed size. Use a live depth walk, consider splitting the order, and set a maximum acceptable average price before execution.

Spot and futures answer different liquidity questions
Spot liquidity concerns buying or selling the asset itself. Futures and perpetual liquidity concerns contracts whose prices may track the asset but whose books, leverage, funding, liquidation flows, and participant mix are different.
| Comparison | What to measure | Evidence in the cited reports | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| BTC spot versus ETH spot | Pair-specific depth, spread, and slippage for the same order size and side | BTC led the selected-exchange depth, spread, and reported slippage comparisons | Useful for an actual spot purchase or sale, provided the pair and venue match |
| BTC futures versus ETH futures | Contract, expiry or perpetual, leverage conditions, and depth band | Futures rankings changed with the measurement band | Do not reuse spot conclusions for derivatives |
| Cross-venue futures depth | Combined contract depth at a stated percentage band | MEXC led combined BTC and ETH futures depth at 0.03%; Bitget led at 0.05% | A ranking is conditional on the band and selected venues, not a universal exchange recommendation |
The fact that MEXC led at 0.03% while Bitget led at 0.05% demonstrates why a reported venue ranking cannot be detached from its measurement width.

Venue and pair selection
Liquidity is not an intrinsic number attached to a token. BTC/USDT on one exchange can have a different spread and depth from BTC/USD on another. The same applies to ETH. Regional access, quote-currency demand, fee schedules, and market-maker participation can all change the visible book.
Order side and size
CoinGecko’s BTC median was $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side, showing that even the same asset can have asymmetric depth. A buy consumes asks; a sell consumes bids. Comparing a BTC buy with an ETH sell is not an apples-to-apples test.

Measurement band
Widening the band includes more distant orders and can alter which venue appears deepest. The TokenInsight futures ranking changed between 0.03% and 0.05%, so the band is part of the result rather than a minor technical detail.

Market stress
During a sharp move, liquidity providers may cancel quotes, spreads may widen, and visible depth may refill at lower or higher prices. Historical medians and periodic API snapshots cannot promise execution during a liquidation cascade, major announcement, or abrupt volatility spike.
How to execute a large BTC or ETH order responsibly
Set an impact limit first
Decide the maximum average-price deviation you will accept before opening the order ticket. A limit prevents an unexpectedly thin book from turning an urgent trade into an uncontrolled market order, although it can leave the order partially filled.
Use the right comparison for the order
For a $100,000 sell, inspect current bids at that size. For a $500,000 sell, inspect how many levels are required and whether the book remains stable after refreshes. Do not use a narrow-band depth number to justify an order that reaches outside that band.
Split when the book is not deep enough
Breaking a large order into smaller clips can reduce immediate market impact, but it introduces timing risk: the price may move between clips, fees may accumulate, and later liquidity may be worse. Slicing is an execution choice, not a guarantee of a better total price.
Recheck after each fill
After a clip executes, refresh the book and recalculate the remaining average-price estimate. The first fill can consume the very levels that made the original plan appear safe.
Keep spot and derivatives risk separate
A deep futures book does not eliminate spot settlement, custody, or funding considerations. Conversely, a liquid spot pair does not ensure that a leveraged perpetual position can be closed at the same cost during stress.
Common mistakes that produce misleading conclusions
- Comparing raw volume only: volume does not reveal nearby executable depth.
- Ignoring the band: $13 million inside one ETH range cannot be compared with BTC depth from an identical-looking but differently defined range.
- Mixing spot and futures: the instruments have different books and risks.
- Using an average as a guarantee: medians and P90 values describe samples, not your next fill.
- Omitting the quote currency: BTC/USDT, BTC/USD, ETH/USDT, and ETH/USD can have distinct liquidity.
- Forgetting direction: buy-side and sell-side depth can differ substantially.
- Treating an exchange ranking as universal: rankings can change with the venue set, time window, contract, and price band.
- Trusting stale screenshots: order books update continuously and can change before submission.
- Extrapolating from one order size: the impact curve can steepen sharply after visible levels are consumed.
What to verify immediately before trading
- Confirm that the market is the intended spot or futures instrument.
- Confirm the exact pair and quote currency.
- Write down whether the order is a buy or sell.
- Calculate the full notional and inspect enough levels to cover it.
- Record the current spread and expected volume-weighted average price.
- Check both a narrow and a wider depth band.
- Refresh the book during the few seconds before submission, especially in a fast market.
- Set a limit price or maximum acceptable impact.
- After execution, compare the actual average price with the pre-trade estimate and include fees.
The September 2026 TokenInsight observations and the September 30, 2026 CoinGecko update are useful benchmarks, but their exchange selections and sampling windows are finite. Use them to frame expectations, then let the live pair-specific book determine whether a trade is currently liquid enough.
