The cost of buying bitcoin is rarely just the commission shown beside the order button. Your all-in cost can include an execution fee, a spread built into the quoted price, a card or bank-provider charge, and a separate fee when you withdraw bitcoin. A low advertised commission does not prove that an exchange is cheapest.
To compare offers fairly, use the same purchase amount, currency, order type, payment method, account tier, and withdrawal network. Record the bitcoin you would receive and every charge shown immediately before confirmation. Fees, spreads, network conditions, promotions, and product availability can change by country and over time.
The four costs that can make up a bitcoin purchase
Exchanges present fees in different places. An order-book trading screen may show a maker or taker commission, while an instant-buy screen may build a spread into the displayed price. Your payment provider can add another charge, and moving bitcoin to an external address creates a withdrawal cost.

| Trading commission | Charged when an order executes, usually as a percentage of the transaction. | Product, pair, maker/taker status, volume tier, account status, discounts, jurisdiction and promotions. |
| Spread | The difference between available buy and sell prices; an instant quote may include it in the transaction price. | Market conditions, asset, order size, trade type, account status and the provider’s pricing model. |
| Payment-provider charge | A card, bank or other payment service may add a fee separate from the exchange’s charge. | Payment method, country, currency conversion, card issuer and provider rules. |
| Withdrawal charge | Applied when bitcoin is sent to an external address; it may include an exchange-set amount based on expected network cost. | Network congestion, selected network, destination requirements, asset, minimum withdrawal and the exchange’s current estimate. |
The amount that matters is the total cost for your particular transaction, not a single headline percentage.

Trading commissions: maker, taker and execution
When the commission is charged
Trading commissions generally apply only when an order executes. Binance Support states: You need to pay a trading fee for every successful trade on Binance Spot.
The support article was published on March 24, 2022, and updated January 6, 2026. It explains that the fee is charged in the asset received and illustrates the calculation with a 0.1% rate.
For a buy, the fee may be deducted from the bitcoin you receive or charged according to the platform’s displayed convention. For a sell, it may be deducted from the proceeds or the asset received. Always check the order preview rather than assuming every exchange handles the currency the same way.
Maker versus taker
On an order book, a maker order adds liquidity, typically by resting on the book until another trader matches it. A taker order executes against an existing order and removes liquidity. Exchanges may assign different rates to each category, and the exact classification depends on how your order fills.

As a current example, Binance’s official fiat-pair schedule lists regular-user maker and taker rates of 0.1000% and 0.2000%, respectively. The schedule is labeled for fiat pairs, includes different rates for higher VIP levels and lists a BNB discount. Those figures are an exchange-published schedule for that product and account structure, not a universal bitcoin rate or a market average. Check the schedule for your country, pair and account tier before calculating.

Worked commission example
Suppose an illustrative exchange charges 0.1000% for a maker fill and you buy $1,000 of bitcoin. The commission component is $1. If the same order is classified as taker at 0.2000%, that component is $2. These examples isolate the commission only; they do not include a spread, payment charge or withdrawal fee.
Spreads: the cost hidden in the quoted price
The spread is the difference between the price at which you can buy and the price at which you can sell at a given moment. An instant-buy interface may show one all-in transaction price rather than a visible order book. In that case, the quote can incorporate a spread in addition to a separately stated fee.
Kraken’s Instant Buy/Sell terms say that transactions are subject to fees and a spread included in the transaction price. The terms state that the spread depends on market conditions, the asset, order size, trade type, VIP status and trading or custodial activity. They report that spreads typically range from 0% to 1.5% of the amount and can reach 3% in extreme conditions. These are Kraken’s stated figures for its service, not an independent statistic for bitcoin markets generally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to detect a spread
- Note the displayed buy price and the amount of bitcoin the quote says you will receive.
- Check whether the interface separately lists a fee or says the price includes a spread.
- If an order book is available, compare the executable ask price with the executable bid price for a similar size.
- Repeat the quote at the same moment for the same amount; rapidly changing markets can move while you review it.
A quote that says “no commission” can still be expensive if its buy price is materially above the market price. Conversely, a visible commission may accompany a tighter spread. Compare the bitcoin received after all stated charges.

Payment methods and third-party charges
The funding route can change the final cost. An exchange may charge different fees for an account balance, debit or credit card, bank transfer or an ACH-style method. Kraken’s terms say fees can differ by selected payment method and warn that a payment provider may impose additional fees. Your card issuer can also treat a transaction differently from a normal purchase or apply a foreign-exchange charge, depending on its rules.
Do not assume that a bank transfer is free everywhere or that a card quote includes every intermediary charge. Before submitting payment, record:
- the exchange fee and any spread disclosure;
- the payment method fee shown by the exchange;
- any currency-conversion rate or charge;
- the amount your bank or card provider will actually debit; and
- the bitcoin amount the exchange promises to credit.
Payment terms are country-specific and can change, so use the live checkout for your jurisdiction instead of an old fee chart.
Bitcoin withdrawal fees and why they change
Exchange charge versus network cost
A withdrawal fee is not the same thing as the fee paid to the Bitcoin network. An exchange may set a withdrawal charge using an estimate of expected network expense, add an operational margin, and impose a minimum withdrawal amount. The amount you see can therefore differ from the transaction fee ultimately paid by the exchange.

Binance says its withdrawal charge is based on estimated network fees, can fluctuate with congestion, varies by selected network and is shown on the withdrawal page. Kraken publishes per-asset fees and minimums but says the final charge can differ and is displayed at confirmation. Coinbase Global Exchange explains that its network fee is based on an estimate of anticipated transaction fees and is disclosed when the transaction is made. These disclosures do not establish one fixed bitcoin withdrawal fee across exchanges.
Network selection is a safety decision
Some services offer more than one network or transfer route. The receiving wallet or platform must support the network you select. Binance specifically warns users to choose a network compatible with the destination address. Sending through an unsupported route can delay the transfer or make recovery difficult or impossible. If the destination gives you a network label, match it exactly before confirming.
Why a withdrawal can look unusually high
- Network congestion has increased the exchange’s estimate.
- You selected a network with a higher current charge than another supported option.
- The exchange applies a minimum or fixed withdrawal amount that is large relative to a small transfer.
- The displayed amount includes both the network estimate and the exchange’s service component.
- The destination requires a particular network, leaving you fewer alternatives.
Open the final confirmation screen and compare the gross amount, fee and net amount received. If the amount is unexpected, stop before confirming and check the exchange’s current withdrawal page and the destination’s supported networks.
How to calculate your all-in cost
Use one consistent formula:
All-in cost in fiat = purchase funds debited − value of bitcoin received at the comparison price + payment-provider charge + withdrawal cost.

Because a spread changes the effective purchase price, it is often clearer to compare the bitcoin received for the same fiat outlay than to compare percentages alone.
Illustrative calculation
Assume a hypothetical quote for a $1,000 purchase. The order executes at a 0.20% taker commission ($2), the quoted instant price is 0.8% above a reference market price because of the spread, and the payment provider adds a separate $5 charge. The exchange later shows a withdrawal charge of 0.0002 BTC. The $2 and $5 are direct dollar charges; the spread changes how much bitcoin the $993 of remaining purchasing power buys, and the withdrawal removes 0.0002 BTC from the amount sent. The numbers are an illustration of the method, not a current market quote.
For a real comparison, use the actual bitcoin quantity and the actual withdrawal amount displayed at confirmation. Do not convert a variable network charge into a permanent percentage.
A fair exchange-fee comparison procedure
- Fix the scenario. Choose one fiat amount, currency, bitcoin amount if relevant, order type, payment method, account tier and intended destination.
- Capture the quote. Record the price, bitcoin quantity, stated commission, spread disclosure and time checked.
- Include funding costs. Add the payment-method fee and any conversion charge shown before authorization.
- Check withdrawal terms. Enter the destination network and record the displayed fee, minimum and net amount received.
- Normalize the result. Convert every charge to the same fiat currency and compare the bitcoin delivered, not just the commission percentage.
- Recheck immediately. Fees, prices and network estimates can change between a saved screenshot and confirmation.
This process is an editorial calculation framework, not a ranking of exchanges. A valid comparison must use simultaneous or near-simultaneous quotes under matching conditions.
Ways to avoid unnecessary fees
- Use an order-book product when you understand limit orders and the maker/taker rules; an instant-buy screen may include a wider spread.
- Check whether your volume or account tier qualifies for a lower published rate, and verify the conditions for any discount.
- Compare payment methods available in your country before funding the account.
- Batch small withdrawals only when the destination and your security plan allow it; a fixed minimum can make repeated small transfers disproportionately expensive.
- Choose a supported, lower-cost network only when the receiving service explicitly supports it.
- Review the final confirmation rather than relying on a fee table cached elsewhere.
A hardware wallet can be useful for self-custody, but buying one does not reduce an exchange’s trading commission or network charge. It is relevant only if you intend to withdraw bitcoin to an address you control.
Limits of published fee figures
Exchange disclosures are useful for understanding how charges are structured, but they are not independent testing. No single market-wide average spread or universal withdrawal fee is established by the figures above. Rates and promotions can vary by geography, account status, asset, product and date. Treat every percentage as scoped to the named service and schedule, and verify the live quote on the day you trade.
