Bitcoin could become less volatile if its markets gain depth, its investor base broadens, macroeconomic conditions become less hostile to risk assets, oversight becomes clearer, and leverage-related risks are better controlled. None of these conditions guarantees a steadier price: Bitcoin has no fixed redemption value, and deeper links to traditional markets can transmit shocks as well as absorb trading.
What “more stable” would mean for Bitcoin
Here, stability means smaller and less frequent price swings—not a price fixed to a currency or an asset. Bitcoin is unbacked, so there is no issuer obligated to redeem it at a set value. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) said in its 2025 Annual Economic Report that unbacked cryptoassets have established themselves as speculative assets rather than means of payment.
To judge whether volatility is actually easing, observers would need to compare realized volatility over a consistent period alongside trading depth and spreads, cross-market correlations and spillovers, leverage and forced liquidations, and the consistency of oversight. A change in one measure alone would not establish that Bitcoin has become broadly more stable.

1. Deeper liquidity and more reliable market access
When more buyers and sellers can trade in a market with adequate depth, a given order may have less effect on price. Broader access can also make it easier for participants to enter or exit positions. These are mechanisms that could soften some price moves, not proof that Bitcoin’s market is becoming less volatile.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
The IMF’s April 2025 Global Financial Stability Report described broad retail and institutional ownership through Bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs). In that report’s context, Bitcoin ETP assets had surpassed $80 billion. The figure is a dated snapshot of ETP assets, not a measure of current market depth or a guarantee of lower volatility.
2. A more diverse investor base
If ownership becomes less concentrated among a narrow set of traders, differing investment horizons and reasons for holding Bitcoin could make the market less dependent on any one group’s decisions. But a broader investor base does not automatically mean steadier trading. Institutional access can also connect Bitcoin more closely to equity markets and broader financial conditions.

The IMF’s April 2025 report found that stock-market shocks spilled over to Bitcoin more than Bitcoin shocks spilled over to stocks. This illustrates the trade-off: wider participation may deepen a market while also increasing its exposure to shocks elsewhere.
3. Less hostile macroeconomic and risk conditions
Interest rates and investors’ appetite for risk can influence demand for speculative assets. If financial conditions and risk sentiment are calmer, sudden shifts in demand could be less disruptive. But this is a conditional possibility, not a forecast that Bitcoin’s volatility will fall when rates or markets move in a particular direction.

An IMF working paper published in 2023 identified a crypto factor that explained 80 percent of variation in crypto prices in the paper’s analysis. The authors also linked the crypto factor’s increasing correlation with equities to institutional entry and discussed risk-taking and interest-rate channels. The 80 percent figure describes that study’s sample and analysis; it is not a current statistic or a universal explanation of Bitcoin’s price moves.
A 2024 BIS working paper examined how US monetary-policy shocks affected traditional markets and stablecoin capitalization. Its findings concern stablecoins and broader markets, not a direct estimate of Bitcoin volatility. Separately, the IMF’s April 2025 report said stablecoin market capitalization had surpassed $200 billion in its reporting context; that figure is about stablecoins, not Bitcoin.

4. Transparent and consistent market oversight
Clear, consistently applied rules and supervision could support confidence and improve market integrity by clarifying expectations for market participants. Regulation can address conduct and resilience; it cannot create a redemption promise or fixed value for Bitcoin.
In a February 23, 2024 statement, the IMF said: “Therefore, a comprehensive policy and regulatory response is necessary to address the risks of crypto assets.” The IMF has also warned that widespread adoption could raise macroeconomic and financial-stability concerns. Oversight may help manage some risks, but it cannot guarantee a stable market price.

5. Better control of leverage and market-structure risks
Borrowing to trade magnifies exposure: a relatively small price move can cause outsized losses. If positions are forcibly closed, selling can add pressure to a falling market and contribute to further liquidations. More effective controls and resilient market structures could limit some of these feedback loops.
There are no current venue-level Bitcoin leverage or liquidity measurements established here, so it is not possible to quantify how large this risk is now or claim that a specific reform would stabilize prices. This factor describes a potential source of volatility and a possible area for risk management, not a measured current trend.

The IMF’s April 2025 report said Bitcoin prices had fallen by more than 25 percent from their peak at the beginning of 2025. That is a dated observation from the report, not a current price statistic or evidence that volatility is now rising or falling. Taken together, the cited reports describe possible stabilizing mechanisms alongside ongoing links to broader financial markets; they do not establish a predictable path to lower Bitcoin volatility.
