On Thursday, October 8, 2026, short-term Bitcoin holders reportedly sent 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss, while crypto markets saw $1.09 billion in liquidations during the 24 hours ending at 10:00 UTC Friday, October 9. Those figures describe different activity: exchange transfers do not prove the coins were sold, and liquidations are forcibly closed leveraged positions.

What the October 9 report said

Cointelegraph’s October 9, 2026 report attributed the liquidation total to CoinGlass: $1.09 billion in crypto positions were liquidated over the 24 hours ending at 10:00 UTC Friday. Of that total, $1.05 billion was attributed to long liquidations on Thursday. These are reported figures for that period, not current market readings. Cointelegraph

The same report said Bitcoin (BTC) fell to $80,350 on Bitstamp, its lowest price since September 18, then recovered to around $82,500 on Friday. These prices describe the episode reported in October 2026; they are not live quotes.

What the 55,600 BTC transfer figure means

Cointelegraph attributed the on-chain figure to CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha, who reported that short-term holders sent 55,600 BTC to exchanges at a loss on Thursday. In the report, short-term holders are entities that have held Bitcoin for up to six months without selling. A transfer is classified as being at a loss when the coins arrive at an exchange at a lower price than their previous transaction. Cointelegraph

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Sending coins to an exchange is not the same as completing a sale. Holders may transfer BTC for several reasons, and the report explicitly notes that not every transferred coin was necessarily sold. The flow is evidence of coins moving to exchange wallets under the stated loss measure, not proof that all 55,600 BTC became market sell orders. KuCoin’s republication of the report also makes clear that an exchange transfer does not guarantee an immediate sale.

Why the numbers are not interchangeable

Signal What it measures Reported scope What it does not establish
Liquidations Leveraged crypto positions forcibly closed, as reported by CoinGlass and cited by Cointelegraph $1.09 billion across 24 hours ending 10:00 UTC Friday; $1.05 billion in long liquidations on Thursday That amount of BTC was sold, or that all liquidated positions were Bitcoin positions
Exchange transfers at a loss BTC attributed to short-term holders arriving at exchanges below the price of its previous transaction, as reported by CryptoQuant contributor Amr Taha 55,600 BTC on Thursday That every transferred coin was sold or that transfers alone predict the next price move
Price movement Reported BTC trading levels on Bitstamp and later in the report $80,350 low, followed by recovery to around $82,500 That a temporary low or rebound confirms a durable trend or support level

Liquidations concern leveraged market positions; exchange flows concern the movement of coins held by entities. They have different definitions and reporting windows, so they should not be added together as if they were one measure of selling. Cointelegraph’s report is the source for the cited market figures and attributes the transfer data to Taha; the original CoinGlass records, CryptoQuant analysis, and social post were not independently accessed for this account.

How to read the $82,500 discussion

Cointelegraph quoted trader and analyst Rekt Capital describing Bitcoin as “currently failing its retest of ~$82500.” He framed the level conditionally: “Weekly Close below $82500 and turn it into resistance however and Bitcoin will be back in its Macro Accumulation Range.” Cointelegraph

This is a technical interpretation dependent on a weekly close and the level acting as resistance. It is not evidence that $82,500 had definitively failed as support, nor a forecast that Bitcoin would enter the range. The reported move back toward that price is separate from the analyst’s conditional scenario.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • The report describes a sharp liquidation event and a separate surge in short-term-holder BTC transfers to exchanges at a loss.
  • The transfer number signals movement to exchanges under a particular loss definition, but does not establish completed selling of all transferred coins.
  • Loss-driven selling can coincide with capitulation and conditions for a possible recovery, but neither the reported transfer nor liquidations guarantee a reversal or continued decline.
  • The cited prices and amounts are historical figures from the October 9, 2026 report, not current market data.
