Bitcoin faces a genuine theoretical risk from sufficiently capable quantum computers, but no quantum-resistant upgrade described in the latest proposals is active Bitcoin policy. In a February 22, 2026 interview, Bitcoin developer Matt Corallo said work on possible responses is underway and outlined trade-offs; the discussion focused on quantum computing, not a concrete AI attack on Bitcoin.

What did the Bitcoin developer say about quantum risk?

In an interview with Unchained, Matt Corallo pushed back on the idea that Bitcoin developers are simply ignoring quantum computing. He said multiple contributors are considering what a post-quantum Bitcoin might look like, while emphasizing that no one person can speak for all developers. His comments are an interview participant’s view, not an official Bitcoin Core position. Read the interview transcript.

The underlying concern is that Bitcoin’s public-key cryptography could be vulnerable if a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could derive a private key from an exposed public key. Corallo discussed possible preparation, but the interview does not establish a working wallet feature, a completed protocol upgrade, or a timetable for migration.

How could quantum computing put Bitcoin at risk?

Bitcoin uses digital signatures to authorize spending. A signature proves control of a private key without revealing the key itself, but the corresponding public key can become visible on-chain in relevant spending conditions. A quantum computer capable of exploiting the public-key cryptography could, in principle, put funds at risk when that public key is exposed. The interview offers no probability or date for when such a computer might exist, so predictions about timing should not be treated as settled.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

Long exposure and short exposure are different cases

BIP 360, a draft proposal in Bitcoin’s BIPs repository, describes Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), which removes Taproot’s key-path spend. Its stated aim is protection against long-exposure quantum attacks, where a public key is exposed for an extended period. The proposal says short-exposure attacks—such as an attack during the window when a transaction is broadcast but not yet confirmed—may require post-quantum signatures. BIP 360 is not a complete solution to every quantum attack. Read the BIP 360 draft.

What responses are being discussed?

Post-quantum signatures

Corallo discussed hash-based post-quantum signatures as one candidate direction. They could require materially more data than current signatures, creating trade-offs for transactions and wallets. The interview does not present a finalized choice of signature scheme or a deployed change.

Preparing keys and proving ownership

Corallo described a possible approach in which wallets commit to post-quantum keys before those keys are needed for spending, with a later decision about whether and when to switch. He also discussed how a seed-based wallet might support proof of ownership in a future protocol change. These are proposal-level ideas, not present-day protections that users can assume their wallets already provide.

A seed phrase and a quantum-resistant signature are not the same thing. A seed phrase can help a wallet derive or restore keys; by itself, it does not make an on-chain signature resistant to quantum attacks.

Migration and legacy signatures

BIP 361, “Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset,” is listed as a draft informational proposal. Its suggested migration process and eventual sunset for legacy signatures are proposed mechanisms, not current Bitcoin rules. Read the BIP 361 draft.

Are Bitcoin developers preparing for quantum computers?

Corallo’s account indicates that developers and organizations are working on research and proposals, but the existence of that work is not the same as consensus or adoption. BIP 360 and BIP 361 remain drafts in the BIPs repository. Bitcoin changes require formal proposals and network adoption; neither draft means Bitcoin has already activated quantum-resistant protections.

The debate is therefore best understood as a question of technical readiness and governance: what threat models to address, which cryptographic trade-offs to accept, and how a migration could work without creating new risks. The interview does not establish an agreed plan or a date for one.

Does AI itself threaten Bitcoin?

The interview briefly invokes AI in the broader context of rapid technology progress and public concern. It does not describe a specific AI attack on Bitcoin’s consensus rules, cryptographic keys, or network security. The substantive risk discussed is quantum computing; AI should not be presented as an established, separate Bitcoin protocol threat on the basis of this interview.
