When a Bitcoin option expires, the exchange applies the contract’s expiry price to its strike and call-or-put direction, then completes the resulting obligation using the settlement method specified for that product. Expiration is the decision point; the strike is the payoff threshold; settlement is the process and asset or currency used to finish the trade.

Those details are venue-specific. A Deribit option and a CME option can use different expiry references, currencies and intermediate futures positions, so never infer one contract’s mechanics from another.

What happens when Bitcoin options expire?

At expiration, the exchange determines a final reference price according to the contract rules. It compares that price with the strike to establish whether the option is in the money (ITM), at the money or out of the money (OTM), calculates the intrinsic payoff, and applies the stated exercise and settlement procedure.

European-style options can be exercised only at expiry. You may still be able to sell or buy the option before that time if the venue operates a secondary market, but you cannot exercise it early. Many major Bitcoin option products are European style and are automatically exercised when they are ITM.

Deribit expiry example

Deribit’s general options rules specify an 08:00 UTC expiry. Its delivery price is the time-weighted average price (TWAP) of the relevant Deribit Index over the 30-minute period from 07:30 to 08:00 UTC. That TWAP—not a single tick at 08:00—is compared with the strike. These times apply to the cited Deribit instruments; they are not a universal Bitcoin-options schedule.

An option that is OTM at that reference price expires worthless. An ITM option is automatically exercised under the contract’s rules. The final result can involve a futures position before the ultimate currency settlement, so “automatic exercise” does not necessarily mean that Bitcoin is transferred directly to your wallet.

Expiration is not the same as a daily mark

Some venues show unrealized profit and loss through regular mark-to-market calculations before expiry. Those marks are valuation updates, not the final exercise event. Final expiration uses the contract’s stated reference price and settlement sequence.

What does strike price mean in Bitcoin options?

The strike price is the fixed price written into the option contract. It is the threshold used to calculate intrinsic value at expiry. It does not include the premium paid to buy the option, the premium received by a seller, trading fees or settlement charges.

Option type Right represented Intrinsic value at expiry (before premium and fees) When it is ITM
Call Right to buy at the strike under the contract terms Settlement price minus strike, when positive Settlement price is above the strike
Put Right to sell at the strike under the contract terms Strike minus settlement price, when positive Settlement price is below the strike

For a call, the payoff increases as the expiry reference price rises above the strike. For a put, it increases as the reference price falls below the strike. If the difference is zero or negative, there is no intrinsic payoff for that option.

Intrinsic value is not the same as profit

A long option buyer pays a premium. Suppose a call has a $100,000 strike and the expiry reference price is $125,000. Its intrinsic value is $25,000 per unit of underlying before the premium and any contract adjustments. If the buyer paid a $30,000 premium, the position would still lose $5,000 before fees even though the option is ITM. A seller’s result has the opposite premium exposure, together with collateral and risk requirements.

Break-even therefore depends on the strike plus the premium for a call, or the strike minus the premium for a put, adjusted for the contract’s multiplier, quote currency and fees. Use the venue’s payoff calculator or contract specification for the exact denomination rather than treating the dollar difference as the final account credit.

How exercise style affects the result

European exercise

European exercise means the holder can exercise only at the scheduled expiry. Deribit describes its options as European and automatically exercised at expiry when ITM. The cited CME materials also describe European exercise for the relevant products. A European option can still gain or lose market value before expiry, but that value is realized by trading the option, not by early exercise.

Automatic exercise and out-of-the-money options

Automatic exercise removes the need to submit an exercise instruction for an ITM option under these rules. An OTM option expires with no intrinsic value. Check whether the venue applies a minimum exercise threshold, fee or other operational condition in the current specification; those details can change by product.

Are Bitcoin options cash-settled or do they deliver Bitcoin?

There is no single answer for all Bitcoin options. “Cash-settled” can describe the economic result while the exchange uses an intermediate futures contract or a base-asset accounting step to get there. The contract’s settlement asset, currency and sequence control what appears in your account.

Venue or product example Exercise Expiry reference described in the cited material Settlement sequence and final denomination
Deribit inverse BTC/ETH options expiring from 1 August 2026 European; automatic exercise when ITM 30-minute Deribit Index TWAP leading into the 08:00 UTC expiry (07:30–08:00 UTC) ITM option is physically settled into a corresponding inverse futures contract at the strike; that future then cash-settles in the base currency. OTM options expire worthless.
Deribit linear USDC options (process in place since early April 2026) European; automatic exercise when ITM 30-minute index TWAP leading into expiry Option settles into a futures contract at the strike; the future then settles in USDC. Deribit states the net profit or loss is unchanged versus direct cash settlement.
CME products described in the cited filings European Settlement linked to the applicable CME Bitcoin futures or CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate methodology Exercise creates a position in an underlying cash-settled futures contract; in-the-money options are automatically exercised into expiring futures under the described filing. Confirm the current product rulebook for today’s contract.

Deribit inverse options: the two-step route

For inverse BTC and ETH options expiring on or after 1 August 2026, Deribit says an ITM option first settles into a corresponding inverse futures contract at the strike. That futures contract then settles in the base currency. The exchange says the net financial result is equivalent to direct cash settlement, but the account may briefly show the futures position or its resulting base-currency transaction. An OTM option has no value at expiry.

Deribit linear USDC options

For linear USDC options, Deribit introduced an analogous process in early April 2026. The option is converted into a futures contract at the strike, and that future settles in USDC. The expiry price remains the 30-minute index TWAP, and Deribit states that the option’s net profit or loss is unchanged by the intermediate step.

CME contracts

The cited CME rule filing identifies European exercise and a settlement reference connected with the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate—New York Variant for the relevant schedule. A CFTC-hosted CME filing from 2019 describes exercise resulting in a position in an underlying cash-settled futures contract, with ITM options automatically exercised into expiring futures. Because that filing is historical, it should not be used to infer current trading hours, listing calendars or every present-day CME product term. Read the current CME contract specifications for the exact contract you intend to trade.

Worked payoff examples

Long call

You buy one call with a $100,000 strike. If the contract’s final reference price is $125,000, the intrinsic difference is $25,000 per unit of underlying. Multiply that difference by the contract multiplier, then apply the settlement currency and any exchange-defined conversion. Subtract the premium and fees to determine the buyer’s net result.

Long put

You buy a put with a $100,000 strike. If the final reference price is $80,000, the intrinsic difference is $20,000 per unit. A final price of $110,000 would leave that put OTM, with no intrinsic settlement value, although the option could have been sold for value before expiry.

Why the reference-price window matters

If a venue uses an averaging window such as Deribit’s 07:30–08:00 UTC TWAP, a brief price spike immediately before expiry may not determine the final price by itself. The relevant index composition, averaging interval and timestamp are contract terms, not assumptions to make from a spot-chart candle.

How to read a Bitcoin option contract before trading

  1. Identify the venue and exact product. Record the exchange, option symbol, underlying index or futures contract, contract multiplier and quote currency.
  2. Write down the expiry timestamp and time zone. Convert it to your local time, and note whether the reference price is a point-in-time value or an averaging window.
  3. Locate the reference-price methodology. Check the named index, its constituents and the stated TWAP or reference-rate interval. Do not substitute a different exchange’s spot price.
  4. Confirm call or put and strike. The strike determines intrinsic value; it does not tell you whether the trade is profitable after premium.
  5. Check exercise style. Verify whether the product is European or American and whether ITM options are exercised automatically.
  6. Map the settlement sequence. Determine whether exercise creates a futures position, whether that future expires immediately, and whether the final denomination is BTC, another base asset, USDC or another currency.
  7. Calculate the complete break-even. Include the option premium, multiplier, conversion rules, trading fees, exercise or settlement fees and any margin funding costs.
  8. Review operational timing. Find the venue’s cutoffs for closing, transferring collateral and handling a resulting futures position. Keep enough margin for any intermediate position.

Comparing two Bitcoin option contracts

When products look similar, compare them on the dimensions below. A difference in any one of these can change the payoff or the assets you receive.

Comparison point Questions to answer Why it matters
Underlying and multiplier Which index or futures contract is referenced? How many BTC does one contract represent? Sets the scale of the payoff and the price used for conversion.
Expiry calendar and timestamp What date, UTC time and holiday rules apply? A different expiry moment can produce a different reference price.
Reference calculation Is settlement based on a TWAP, a reference rate or a futures price? What interval is used? Determines the final price when markets are volatile.
Exercise style European or American? Is exercise automatic? Controls whether early exercise is possible and what action is required.
Intermediate instrument Does exercise create an underlying futures position? You may need margin and risk management for that position, even when the final result is cash-settled.
Final asset or currency Does the obligation settle in BTC, another base asset, USDC or another currency? Determines your currency exposure and the balance credited or debited.
Fees and conversions What are the premium, trading, exercise, delivery and conversion charges? Fees can turn positive intrinsic value into a negative net result.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Assuming every option expires at the same hour. Expiry is venue- and contract-specific. Use the symbol’s specification, not a remembered schedule.
  • Equating ITM with profitable. Compare intrinsic value with the premium and all fees.
  • Assuming “cash settled” means no futures position. Deribit’s 2026 procedures use an intermediate future while preserving the stated net result.
  • Expecting physical Bitcoin delivery. The cited Deribit procedures do not end with direct physical delivery to the holder, and CME products use their own futures-linked mechanics. Check the named contract.
  • Using a spot exchange’s last price as settlement. A TWAP or reference rate may be materially different from the last traded price.
  • Using an old product document as a current schedule. The CME filing cited for futures-linked exercise dates from 2019. Verify current specifications before relying on hours, currencies or availability.
  • Ignoring the intermediate position. If exercise creates a futures contract, confirm its size, expiry, margin requirement and automatic closeout rules.

A practical expiry-day checklist

  • Confirm the exact option symbol, strike, call/put side and contract multiplier.
  • Check the expiry date, UTC timestamp and reference-price averaging window.
  • Read the current exercise and settlement section for the venue.
  • Estimate intrinsic value using the contract’s reference-price method, not a generic spot quote.
  • Subtract the premium and all known fees from the payoff estimate.
  • Verify whether an ITM option will create a futures position and in which asset or currency.
  • Keep sufficient margin and avoid transferring collateral until the settlement sequence is complete.
  • After expiry, reconcile the resulting balance, futures transaction and fees against the contract specification.
