Neither option is automatically cheaper. Hosting can spare you the capital, permits, power procurement, staffing and day-to-day work of operating a mine, but you pay a provider under a contract and may surrender control over uptime decisions, payouts, equipment access and exit timing. Owning a facility gives you control of the site, power strategy, hardware and treasury, while putting every construction, financing, maintenance and operating risk on your balance sheet.
The useful comparison is not a host’s advertised energy rate versus a utility tariff. Build a location- and scale-specific model that includes miner purchase and depreciation, power and demand charges, cooling, networking, labor, repairs, financing, downtime, curtailment credits, taxes and the exact hosting contract. The result can favor either model.
What “hosting” and “running your own facility” actually mean
Hosted Bitcoin mining
In a hosted arrangement, you generally buy or otherwise supply mining hardware and place it in a provider’s data center or mining farm. The provider supplies the site, electrical infrastructure, cooling, physical security, monitoring and some maintenance. Your contract determines whether power is billed separately, embedded in a recurring fee, or charged according to measured consumption and uptime.
One concrete example is the HOST ANTMINER FAQ. It publishes this formula: HOST Fee = $0.10/kWh × Power Consumption (kW) × Uptime (hours). That is a provider-specific offer description, not a market-wide hosting price or an independent estimate. The same FAQ says the named arrangement requires purchasing the miner, while no electricity prepayment is required during the host period.

Self-owned and operated facility
With a self-run mine, you secure the site and utility relationship, install electrical distribution and cooling, buy and deploy miners, operate the network and pool connections, and provide monitoring, repairs, security and compliance. You may own a single building, lease a containerized site, or develop a large multi-megawatt operation. Scale changes the economics: a small site may lack negotiating leverage and redundancy, while a larger site may justify dedicated technicians, switchgear and power-market strategies.
Which costs belong in the comparison?
Separate one-time capital, recurring operating expense and financial or contractual risk. A hosting quote that looks low can omit your miner purchase, financing, insurance, taxes or the value of restricted access to mined coins. A self-build model that uses only a low energy tariff can omit transformers, cooling, labor, repairs, depreciation and the cost of unused capacity.
| Cost or risk axis | Hosted mining | Owned and operated facility |
|---|---|---|
| Initial capital | May include the miner purchase, shipping and setup; some offers bundle site services or require prepayment. The HOST ANTMINER example requires buying the miner and says electricity is not prepaid during hosting. | Includes miners plus land or lease costs, utility interconnection, transformers, switchgear, cabling, racks or containers, cooling, networking, security and commissioning. No universal construction price is established; obtain site-specific quotes. |
| Electricity and power | May be represented by a fee tied to consumption and uptime, as in the published $0.10/kWh formula. Check demand charges, taxes, minimums, curtailment treatment and metering. | You negotiate or otherwise secure generation and delivery. You bear tariff changes, demand charges, congestion, curtailment decisions, minimum-take obligations and the cost of stranded capacity. |
| Labor and maintenance | The provider may monitor miners and troubleshoot on site. Scope, response time, parts, labor charges and exclusions are contractual. | You hire or contract technicians, stock parts, manage firmware and pool configuration, and operate the site around the clock or accept slower response. |
| Uptime and downtime | Output depends on facility uptime and the contract’s definition of an outage, exclusions and remedies. A provider’s support process is not an independently verified uptime guarantee. | You control operating decisions but absorb every outage, repair delay, weather event, network failure and power interruption. |
| Mining proceeds and custody | Confirm pool account ownership, payout thresholds, timing, wallet control and whether the provider can retain or restrict proceeds. | You choose the pool and payout arrangement, subject to pool rules, wallet security and any financing or power agreements. |
| Exit and asset control | Review term, early-termination fee, relocation rights, access to hardware, insurance, provider termination rights and the process for collecting mined BTC. | You retain hardware and site decisions but may be locked into leases, utility contracts, debt, equipment resale losses or relocation costs. |
| Depreciation and full cost | A hosted miner can still be your capital asset. Model its purchase price, useful life, resale value and failure risk separately from the host fee. | Include miner and facility depreciation with direct operating expenses. Excluding depreciation can make a capital-intensive operation appear artificially cheap. |
| Power-market flexibility | The host may curtail or shift load, but you may not control when or how. Determine whether credits are passed through to you. | You can design demand-response and curtailment strategies, but you also bear lost production and compliance costs. Benefits are not guaranteed at small scale. |
How a hosting contract changes your economics
Read the fee definition, not just the headline rate
For the published HOST ANTMINER formula, calculate the fee from the miner’s measured power draw and the provider-defined uptime hours. A hypothetical 3 kW miner running for 720 hours in a month would produce a $216 fee at that formula ($0.10 × 3 × 720), before considering the miner’s purchase price, pool fees, taxes, shipping, repairs or any other contract charge. The arithmetic illustrates the formula; it is not a quotation for every customer or location.

Ask how partial-month service, failed machines, planned maintenance, power rationing and force majeure affect “uptime.” A lower nominal rate can be more expensive if the provider adds demand charges, minimum monthly fees, setup charges or a markup on repairs.

Understand payout and custody mechanics
The HOST ANTMINER FAQ says mined BTC can be monitored daily but is withdrawable only when hosting ends. It also describes an early-exit path after one month: pay the HOST Fee and withdraw the BTC and the miner. Treat those statements as terms of that specific offer and confirm the current contract, geography and product version before relying on them. Your diligence should identify the wallet owner, signing authority, payout address, minimum balance, reconciliation method and what happens if the provider becomes insolvent or stops operating.
Define service levels and remedies
Ask for a written uptime definition, measurement method, maintenance windows, compensation for missed availability and exclusions. The FAQ lists equipment failure, temperature, power rationing, maintenance and network issues as possible downtime causes. It says difficult hardware issues enter an RMA process within 48 hours, but that process is not a promise that a repair will be completed within 48 hours. Require clarity on shipping, replacement parts, labor, firmware changes and who pays when a machine is declared uneconomic to repair.
What a self-run facility must pay for
Power capacity and interconnection
Power availability is a feasibility gate, not a line item to fill in later. Determine contracted megawatts, voltage, transformer capacity, substation ownership, delivery point, demand charges, minimum take-or-pay obligations, curtailment provisions and the schedule for energization. A cheap energy rate is useless if the site cannot deliver the required continuous load or if connection upgrades take years.
The BITMAIN mining-farm application shows the information a provider wants before evaluating a site: intended hosted electricity cost, capacity, expected uptime, energy sources, water information, electricity contracts and land-lease contracts. Those are the same questions an owner should answer before ordering hardware.

Facility infrastructure
Budget for land or a building, civil work, electrical distribution, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, grounding, racks or containers, ventilation or immersion cooling, fire detection, networking, cameras, access control, spares storage and a control room. Include engineering, permits, environmental reviews, interconnection studies, commissioning and insurance. The available public sources do not establish a universal all-in construction cost, so use bids for your location and intended load.
People and operating processes
Someone must inspect electrical equipment, replace failed fans or hash boards, manage firmware, monitor temperature and hashrate, secure wallets and respond to alarms. A remote site may need on-call technicians, security staff, fuel or generator procedures and travel budgets. Model labor by shift and by failure volume rather than assuming one operator can supervise every machine indefinitely.
Depreciation, financing and residual value
Miners lose economic value as newer, more efficient models arrive and as hash-price conditions change. Record purchase price, shipping, installation, financing interest, useful life, expected resale value and a replacement schedule. If debt funds the build, include covenants, collateral, principal repayments and the possibility that revenue falls while debt service remains fixed.
Why published mining costs are not a universal benchmark
Riot Platforms’ financial disclosures demonstrate how accounting scope and period alter the answer. In its full-year 2024 results, Riot reported an average direct cost of $32,216 per bitcoin excluding miner depreciation and $64,421 including miner depreciation. Its 2023 figures were $3,831 excluding depreciation and $36,521 including depreciation. These are company-specific annual results, not a forecast for a new mine.

In its second-quarter 2026 results, Riot reported $49,912 per bitcoin excluding miner depreciation for the three months ended June 30, 2026, compared with $48,992 in the second quarter of 2025. Riot attributed the increase primarily to higher power costs and expansion at its Kentucky facility. The periods, facilities, fleet efficiency, power contracts and accounting scope differ, so do not compare these figures directly with a host quote without normalizing them.
Riot’s methodology separates power, other direct operating costs, power-curtailment credits and miner depreciation. That structure is a useful template: show each component instead of presenting “electricity cost” as the total cost to mine.
Power strategy, curtailment and capacity utilization
Owning a site can create options that a hosted customer may not control. An operator might curtail miners when power prices rise, participate in a demand-response program or negotiate fixed-price contracts. Those choices can reduce net power cost, but they also reduce production during the curtailment period and require a market, eligible load and contractual access. Never assume a credit shown in a large operator’s results will be available to a small facility or passed through by a host.

A dated example illustrates why capacity matters. In a 2024 acquisition announcement, Riot described Kentucky sites with 60 MW of operational capacity: 23 MW allocated to self-mining, 19 MW vacant and 18 MW under hosting agreements. The figures describe that portfolio at that time, not a general utilization target or current capacity. For your model, show contracted capacity, energized capacity, deployed miner load and deliberately vacant capacity as separate numbers.

A practical apples-to-apples comparison method
- Define the same hardware. Use the same miner model, quantity, wattage, purchase price, shipping, installation date, expected hashrate and efficiency in both cases.
- Choose a time horizon. Use a month for cash-flow stress testing and a multi-year horizon for depreciation, financing, replacement and exit value. State whether figures are nominal or inflation-adjusted.
- Normalize power. Convert every option to dollars per kWh at the same meter boundary. Add demand charges, taxes, cooling overhead, conversion losses, minimums and credits. For hosting, identify what the fee includes; for ownership, include utility and site losses.
- Model uptime explicitly. Separate planned maintenance, equipment failure, power curtailment, network outages and force majeure. Apply the same availability assumptions to both choices, then run a downside case with longer repair times.
- Add all capital costs. Include miners and facility infrastructure for ownership. For hosting, include the miner if you own it, plus shipping, setup, deposits and any prepaid service.
- Include labor and repairs. Use a staffing plan, parts inventory, service contract and expected failure rate. Do not treat provider labor as free; it is embedded in the host fee or charged separately.
- Account for proceeds and custody. Record payout timing, pool fees, wallet control, withdrawal restrictions and the value of delayed access to BTC.
- Test exit scenarios. Calculate early termination, machine retrieval, relocation, resale, lease unwind, debt repayment and provider-default outcomes.
- Run sensitivity cases. Vary bitcoin price, network difficulty, transaction fees, power price, uptime, miner efficiency, repair cost and financing rate. A single break-even point hides this volatility.
Core equations
- Hosting cost: contract fee + miner capital cost or lease cost + pool and transaction fees + repairs + taxes + financing + expected downtime loss.
- Owned-facility cost: power and demand charges + cooling and site overhead + labor + maintenance and parts + insurance and compliance + facility and miner depreciation + financing + downtime loss − documented credits or other operating revenue.
- Cost per bitcoin: total cost for the period ÷ BTC mined in the same period. Keep depreciation included and excluded versions side by side so the capital burden is visible.
Risks that often decide the outcome
Contract and counterparty risk
A host controls the building, power switchgear and often physical access to your miners. Review ownership, insurance, liens, subcontractors, insolvency remedies, data access, audit rights, governing law and what happens if the facility loses its lease or power contract. A low fee is not protection against a provider default.
Operational concentration
Hosting can concentrate many customers in one facility, utility connection or network path. Self-operation can also create concentration if every miner depends on one transformer, cooling loop or internet provider. Price the redundancy you actually need rather than assuming a second path exists.
Hardware and technology risk
Confirm who owns a machine during repair, whether replacement hardware can be substituted, and whether firmware changes are permitted. A host may optimize for fleet-wide efficiency, while an owner may keep older machines running when energy prices are low. Either choice affects hashrate, efficiency and residual value.
Regulatory, tax and environmental exposure
Permits, zoning, noise limits, water use, emissions rules, sales or use tax, property tax and digital-asset accounting vary by jurisdiction. The correct treatment depends on your location and entity; obtain local legal and tax advice before committing capital.
Due-diligence checklists
Questions for a hosting provider
- What exactly is included in the fee, and what meter boundary and uptime definition apply?
- Which taxes, demand charges, cooling costs, setup fees, minimums and repair charges are additional?
- Who owns the miner, and can you inspect, insure, retrieve or relocate it?
- Where are BTC balances held, who controls the wallet and when can funds be withdrawn?
- What are the term, renewal, early-exit, provider-termination and insolvency provisions?
- What uptime remedy applies, and which maintenance, power, temperature, network and force-majeure events are excluded?
- What is the RMA process, including response targets, shipping, parts, labor and replacement policy?
- Can the provider curtail load, change the site, alter firmware or move equipment without consent?
Questions for an owned facility
- Is the utility willing to provide the required capacity, voltage and energization date in writing?
- What are the tariff, demand, minimum-take, curtailment and termination terms?
- What permits, zoning approvals, water arrangements, noise controls and environmental reviews apply?
- What redundancy is required for transformers, cooling, network connectivity, security and fire protection?
- Who will staff monitoring, repairs, security and emergency response, and what parts inventory is needed?
- How will you finance miners and infrastructure, and what happens if revenue falls below debt service?
- What is the replacement, resale, recycling and insurance plan for obsolete or damaged hardware?
When each model is usually appropriate
Hosting is a stronger fit when
- You want to deploy a modest fleet without building electrical and cooling infrastructure.
- You lack local power-market, construction or mining-operations expertise.
- You value a defined service scope and can accept contractual limits on access and control.
- Your comparison shows that the host’s all-in fee is lower than your fully loaded local operating cost after including capital and labor.
Ownership is a stronger fit when
- You can secure reliable, competitively priced power and enough capacity to justify site infrastructure.
- You need direct control of hardware, wallets, uptime decisions, curtailment and expansion.
- You have the capital, financing capacity, staff and compliance capability to run the operation.
- Your model remains viable under conservative bitcoin-price, difficulty, uptime and power-price assumptions.
Bottom-line decision rule
Choose hosting only after converting its fee and restrictions into a fully loaded cost that includes your miners, financing, downtime and delayed access to proceeds. Choose an owned facility only after proving that power, interconnection, infrastructure, labor, depreciation and exit costs work at your intended scale. The winning option is the one that survives downside scenarios while preserving the level of control and liquidity your operation requires—not the one with the lowest advertised cents-per-kilowatt-hour figure.
