Bitcoin-mining shares sold off sharply on Wednesday as a hotter-than-expected US inflation report pushed investors to reconsider Federal Reserve policy. TeraWulf, Core Scientific, Cipher Mining and IREN each lost more than 12%, while the broader technology and equity markets also fell. The move was therefore a combination of macroeconomic pressure, expensive financing and concern about the high valuations attached to miners’ growing artificial-intelligence and data-center ambitions—not an isolated collapse in Bitcoin mining.
What happened to bitcoin-mining stocks?
Bitcoin miners were among the session’s worst-performing equity groups. TeraWulf fell 12.64%, Core Scientific dropped 12.44%, Cipher Mining declined 12.35% and IREN lost 12.2%. Riot Platforms, Bitdeer Technologies, MARA and CleanSpark also finished lower, although the supplied market report does not state their exact one-day declines.

The broader selloff puts those losses in context. The S&P 500 fell 1.1%, its largest one-day decline since July 29. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.9%, its biggest fall since July 23, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.1%. Bitcoin-mining shares therefore amplified a market-wide risk-off move rather than moving independently of Wall Street.

Consumer prices rose 3.7% in September 2026 from a year earlier, according to the reported inflation release. Economists had expected 3.6%, and the result was well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Higher gasoline prices, which the report linked partly to the Middle East war, helped produce the upside surprise.

A hotter CPI reading can delay interest-rate cuts or increase the chance of another increase. Immediately after the data, the market-implied probability of an October Federal Reserve rate hike briefly moved above 50%, although that probability later retreated. Investors also had to weigh competing signals from Fed officials: some indicated that additional tightening could be necessary, while San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said, “I don’t feel urgent that we have to decide with a limited set of information. I think we have the time that we need.”
How higher rates affect bitcoin miners
Borrowing becomes more expensive
Mining is a capital-intensive business. Companies spend heavily on specialized computers, power capacity, facilities and grid connections. AI and data-center projects require still larger investments and are often financed partly with debt. When interest rates rise, new borrowing costs more and existing floating-rate obligations can become more expensive to service.

Future growth is worth less today
Higher rates also reduce the present value investors assign to cash flows expected years in the future. That matters for miners building facilities whose returns depend on future computing demand. A project can remain technically viable while becoming less attractive at a higher discount rate, leading investors to mark down the stock before any operating result changes.
Risk appetite contracts
Inflation shocks tend to hurt speculative, high-growth shares first. Mining companies combine commodity-price exposure with substantial operating and financing risk, so their equity can move more than the major indexes during a broad de-risking session.

Why bitcoin miners are trading with AI stocks
Several miners have expanded beyond producing Bitcoin into AI infrastructure and data-center services. That strategy can open a second source of revenue, but it also links the companies to the same valuation and financing pressures affecting technology stocks.
The day’s technology losses show the connection: CoreWeave fell 16%, Nebius declined 11% and Oracle dropped 9%. The PRISM AI Data Center and Infrastructure Index fell in 21 of its 23 tracked stocks, with an average loss of 7.46%. Miners pursuing comparable infrastructure opportunities were exposed to that repricing even when the immediate headline was about inflation.

The reporting does not provide company-by-company debt balances or identify which of the four largest decliners has the greatest AI exposure. It does establish the broader pattern: miners with infrastructure ambitions can be repriced for both cryptocurrency risk and technology-financing risk.

- Inflation data: Another upside surprise could reinforce expectations for restrictive policy; softer readings would ease that pressure.
- Federal Reserve communication: The market will reassess the October rate outlook as officials provide more guidance. Daly’s comments indicate that at least one policymaker sees no need for an immediate decision based on limited information.
- Project financing: Watch debt issuance, interest expense, equipment purchases and construction commitments, particularly for AI or data-center facilities.
- Bitcoin economics: Mining revenue, network difficulty, power costs and Bitcoin’s price still determine the core operating case, regardless of any AI strategy.
- Technology valuations: Continued weakness in AI-infrastructure shares could pressure miners’ expansion plans even if Bitcoin prices remain stable.
Does the plunge mean mining companies are failing?
Not by itself. A one-day share-price decline reflects investors’ changing expectations about rates, financing and future growth; it does not prove that a company’s mines stopped operating or that its projects were cancelled. The session does show that the market now treats many miners as leveraged technology-and-energy businesses as well as Bitcoin producers. Their risk profile is consequently broader than Bitcoin exposure alone.
