Use a market order when getting filled now matters more than the exact price. Use a limit order when price protection matters more than certainty of execution. A market order consumes the best available offers or bids and may fill across several order-book levels. A limit order sets the worst acceptable price, but it can remain open, fill only partly, or never fill. The fee you pay depends on whether each part of the order takes liquidity (taker) or adds liquidity (maker), not simply on whether the order is labeled “limit.”
The decision in one table
| Priority | Usually appropriate | What you accept |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate execution | Market order | The final average price can be worse than the quote shown before submission. |
| Price ceiling on a buy or floor on a sell | Limit order | The order may wait, fill partially, or remain unfilled. |
| Price control plus a chance of immediate execution | Aggressive limit order | If it crosses the spread, the matched portion is generally taker-priced. |
| Maker treatment and no immediate match | Resting, post-only limit order | The venue may cancel it rather than let it execute as a taker. |
Neither order type is automatically cheaper. Compare the trading fee, spread, expected slippage, and any product- or venue-specific surcharge before you submit.
How a Bitcoin order book determines your fill
An order book lists buy orders (bids) and sell orders (asks) at different prices. The highest bid is what buyers currently offer; the lowest ask is what sellers currently request. The gap between them is the bid/ask spread. A matching engine pairs incoming orders with available orders at prices that satisfy the instructions.

Kraken’s exchange rules describe a market order as buying or selling immediately at the best available market price on the order book. The rules also state that a market order can execute at different price levels because of order size and existing depth, and that slippage can occur as market conditions change. Those mechanics apply to any venue with a price-time-priority order book: a quote at the top is not a promise that your entire quantity will trade there.

Why displayed price and average fill differ
Suppose the ask side has 0.20 BTC at $60,000, another 0.30 BTC at $60,010, and more at higher prices. A 0.50 BTC market buy consumes both levels. Your average is between $60,000 and $60,010, not necessarily the first $60,000 quote. A larger order walks farther up the book. A market sell works the same way down the bid side.
Market orders: speed in exchange for price uncertainty
A market order tells the exchange to seek execution immediately at the best available prices. You normally specify the quantity (or, on some interfaces, the amount of cash to spend) rather than a price. The exchange keeps matching until the requested amount is filled or available liquidity runs out, subject to the venue’s rules.
Advantages
- High execution certainty when the market is open and sufficient liquidity is available.
- Fast entry or exit when a delay is more costly than a small price difference.
- No risk that a stated limit will simply sit below the market on a buy or above it on a sell.
Costs and failure modes
- Slippage: the realized average can differ from the price you saw. Size, thin depth, volatility, and movement during matching all matter.
- Spread cost: a buy normally pays the available ask, while a sell normally receives the available bid.
- Taker classification: because the order removes resting liquidity, the matched quantity is charged at the venue’s taker rate.
- Unexpected total: the final fee and average price can change while the order is being processed.
For a small order in a deep, stable book, the difference may be immaterial. For a large order or a fast market, inspect the preview’s estimated average price, spread, and any slippage control before confirming. No universal “typical Bitcoin slippage” percentage is reliable: the result changes with pair, size, depth, volatility, and venue.

A limit order specifies both quantity and price. A buy limit can execute only at that price or lower; a sell limit can execute only at that price or higher. Kraken’s rules use the phrase “at that price or better.” The boundary protects you from receiving a worse execution than the limit, but it does not guarantee that anyone will trade with you.
Passive limits that rest on the book
A buy placed below the best ask, or a sell placed above the best bid, normally rests as a new quote. It waits for another trader to take it. If it later matches, that resting portion is generally a maker trade because it added liquidity. A post-only instruction, where offered, tells the venue to cancel rather than execute immediately; it is useful when maker classification is important.

Crossing limits that execute immediately
A buy limit priced at or above the current ask can match immediately. A sell limit priced at or below the current bid can do the same. Kraken’s rules explicitly allow these cases. The immediately matched part removes liquidity and is therefore taker-priced. If only part crosses and the remainder is left resting, the two portions can have different classifications and fees.
What can happen after submission
- Full fill: the whole quantity trades at the limit or a better price.
- Partial fill: available quantity trades, while the remainder remains open.
- No fill: the market never reaches your price before you cancel or the order expires.
- Cancellation: you, the venue, or the selected time-in-force condition removes the unfilled quantity.
Time-in-force labels vary by venue. Check whether “good ’til canceled,” “day,” “immediate-or-cancel,” or “fill-or-kill” is available and what each does before relying on it.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMaker and taker fees: why “limit” is not synonymous with “maker”
A taker removes an existing order and receives an immediate match. A maker adds a new resting order that another trader can later take. The classification is determined at the moment each portion matches.
Kraken’s maker-and-taker explanation says market orders are taker orders and warns that a limit order can also be taker if its price is on the wrong side of the book. Coinbase Advanced describes the same behavior: an immediately filled market order and an immediately fulfilled limit order pay the taker fee; a buy limit below market that rests pays the maker fee when it matches. If one order is partly matched immediately and partly rests, Coinbase says the immediate portion is taker and the resting portion is maker.
Rates are specific to the venue and account
Kraken’s fee explanation published September 5, 2026 reports a range from -0.02% maker to 0.80% taker, depending on 30-day volume, pair, and maker/taker status. The negative maker figure represents a possible rebate in the stated schedule; it is not a general Bitcoin rate and may not apply to your account or product.

Coinbase says its Advanced fee tiers use applicable 30-day volume or balance criteria and are displayed in the Advanced Trade interface. A separate Coinbase consumer pricing disclosure says certain simple crypto limit orders can carry a 1% limit-order execution fee, with spreads and fees shown in the order preview. That disclosure is product- and jurisdiction-specific; do not apply it to every Coinbase product or to every exchange.
Before sending an order, open the live fee schedule and preview for the exact BTC pair, account tier, product, and region. A fee shown for spot BTC/USD may not apply to a derivative, conversion screen, or another quote currency.
The all-in cost: fee plus spread plus slippage
Comparing only maker and taker percentages can produce the wrong answer. A useful estimate is:
All-in cost for a buy ≈ trading fee + spread paid + adverse price movement (slippage) + venue-specific surcharge.
For a sell, use the same components from the seller’s perspective: the bid you receive relative to a reference or midpoint, the fee, any book-walking loss, and additional charges. A passive limit can avoid paying the spread and may capture it, but waiting exposes you to adverse selection: the market may move away after your order is posted, or your order may fill just before an unfavorable move.

How to read the spread
For a buy, compare the best ask with the midpoint between the best bid and ask, or with the reference price supplied by the venue. For a sell, compare the best bid with that reference. The spread is an immediate economic cost even when the explicit fee is zero or negative. A market order normally pays it; a resting order may earn it if another trader crosses to your quote.
Worked example with clearly stated assumptions
The following is an illustration, not a market quote or a prediction. Assume a BTC/USD spot book shows a $60,000 best bid and a $60,010 best ask. Assume the buy order is 0.50 BTC, the account’s taker fee is 0.40%, and its maker fee is 0.15%. Those fee percentages are hypothetical; the live venue schedule controls.
| Order and book assumption | Execution illustration | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Market buy; 0.20 BTC at $60,010 and 0.30 BTC at $60,020 | Gross fill value: $30,010. Average price: $60,020. Taker fee at 0.40%: $120.04. Total cash: $30,130.04. | The order walks two ask levels; the displayed top ask was not the average for the full size. |
| Passive buy limit at $60,000; 0.50 BTC available over time | Gross fill value: $30,000. Maker fee at 0.15%: $45. Total cash: $30,045, if the entire order fills at that price. | A lower fee and price can reduce cost, but the order may never fill. |
| Aggressive buy limit at $60,020 | The first 0.50 BTC can match immediately at $60,010 and $60,020. The matched portion is taker-priced despite the limit label. | A limit is price protection, not a maker guarantee. |
Real books change continuously, and the fee tier, minimum size, quote-currency rules, and available depth can alter every result. Use the venue’s preview for the actual calculation.
How to place each order safely
Market order checklist
- Open the exact BTC trading pair and verify whether you are buying or selling spot BTC or using another product.
- Inspect the bid, ask, spread, and visible depth. Compare your size with the quantity available near the top of the book.
- Enter the quantity or cash amount. Check the estimated average fill, fee, and any maximum-slippage or price-protection control.
- Confirm the fee tier and the final order summary, then submit once. Avoid repeatedly sending new market orders during a rapidly moving market.
- After execution, review the fills report, which should show each price level, the total fee, and the final average.
Passive limit order checklist
- Choose “Limit,” enter the quantity, and set a buy below the best ask or a sell above the best bid if you want the order to rest.
- Select post-only when available and when maker treatment is worth prioritizing. Understand that post-only may cancel an order that would otherwise execute immediately.
- Choose the time-in-force. A good-’til-canceled order can remain open until you remove it; other options may cancel unfilled quantity sooner.
- Review the open-order status and whether any portion filled immediately. A partial fill can leave a remainder at a different status.
- Cancel or replace the order when your price, risk limit, or trading plan changes. Do not assume an old order will remain appropriate as the market moves.
Aggressive limit order checklist
- Set the maximum buy price or minimum sell price you will accept.
- Compare that limit with the current opposite quote to see whether it will cross the spread.
- Read the preview for taker fees on any immediate match and confirm whether unfilled quantity will rest or cancel.
- Use this form when a hard cap matters but waiting for a passive fill would defeat the trade. It is not a way to guarantee maker fees.
Choosing by trading situation
Urgent risk reduction or exit
When the primary objective is to reduce exposure immediately, a market order can be reasonable, especially for a modest size in a deep book. Check the estimated average and spread first; “immediate” does not mean “at the last traded price.” For a larger position, an aggressive limit with a defined worst price may be preferable if you can tolerate a partial result.
Planned accumulation
If you can wait, place passive buy limits at prices consistent with your plan, possibly as a ladder of smaller orders. Each order can fill at a different price, and none is guaranteed to execute. Reassess open orders as volatility and your budget change.

Trading a thin or rapidly moving pair
Reduce size, inspect multiple book levels, and consider splitting the order. A market order can sweep a thin book; a single large passive order can advertise your interest and still be filled just before the market moves against you. The venue’s documented advanced execution tools may help, but their behavior and availability differ.
Fee-sensitive execution
Use a genuinely resting limit or post-only order only when the probability and timing of a fill fit your plan. A nominally lower maker rate is not cheaper if waiting forces you to chase the market later, or if a separate product surcharge outweighs the difference.
Reducing slippage on larger Bitcoin orders
- Split the quantity: several smaller orders may consume less depth at once, although the market can move between them.
- Use a price ladder: distribute passive limits across predetermined levels instead of placing the entire amount at one price.
- Set a maximum acceptable price: an aggressive limit caps a buy even if the market is moving quickly; it may leave quantity unfilled.
- Compare venues and pairs: depth, spread, fees, and minimum order rules vary. Use only accounts and products you understand.
- Monitor partial fills: an order that is partly complete can leave a residual exposure that needs a separate decision.
Do not promise yourself a fixed slippage percentage. It is an outcome of current liquidity and volatility, not a permanent property of Bitcoin.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why a Bitcoin limit order charged a taker fee
- The price crossed the spread. A buy at or above the ask, or a sell at or below the bid, matched immediately.
- Only part of the order rested. The immediately matched portion was taker; the later resting portion was maker.
- The interface used a different product. A simple-buy screen may apply a product-specific execution fee rather than the exchange’s Advanced order-book schedule.
- The fee tier changed. Volume windows, account level, pair, region, or product can change the applicable rate.
- Post-only was not selected or was unavailable. A normal limit order is allowed to execute immediately unless the venue says otherwise.
Open the fills or trade-history details rather than relying on the order label. They should identify the execution price, quantity, and fee for each fill. Then compare those entries with the venue’s fee schedule for the same date and product.
Pre-submission risk checklist
- Is immediate execution more important than price, or is the price boundary more important than completion?
- What are the current best bid, best ask, midpoint, and visible quantity at nearby levels?
- Will the order cross the spread? If so, have you budgeted for taker treatment?
- What fee tier applies to this account, pair, product, and location today?
- Could a partial or missed fill leave you with unacceptable exposure?
- What time-in-force, post-only, maximum-slippage, or cancellation controls does this venue actually provide?
- After execution, will you check the fills report and total fee rather than assuming the preview was the final result?
Bottom-line decision
Market orders buy certainty and speed by accepting the available spread, possible book-walking, and taker fees. Passive limit orders buy price control and possible maker treatment by accepting waiting and fill risk. Aggressive limits sit between those choices: they cap the price but can execute immediately as takers. Select the order type from your priority, then use the live order preview and fee schedule for the exact venue instead of assuming that every “limit” order is cheaper or every market quote is executable for your full size.
