A Bitcoin-backed loan lets you borrow cash or a stablecoin while pledging BTC as collateral. You still carry the risk of Bitcoin’s price falling, while the lender or a custodian controls the collateral under the loan documents. If the collateral value drops relative to your debt, the agreement may require more BTC, a partial repayment, or a sale of some or all collateral. Custody rights, interest, thresholds, cure periods, fees, and notice are contract terms—not universal features of Bitcoin loans.

What is a Bitcoin-backed loan?

You deposit or lock Bitcoin and receive a loan in fiat currency, a stablecoin, or another agreed asset. The lender takes a security interest in the BTC. You normally repay principal plus interest by a stated maturity or through a line of credit. The Bitcoin may remain under a third-party custodian, in an escrow arrangement, or in a protocol-controlled wallet, depending on the product.

The collateral does not remove market risk. Suppose you borrow $50,000 against BTC worth $100,000. Your starting loan-to-value (LTV) is 50 percent. If BTC falls to $70,000 while your debt remains near $50,000, LTV rises to about 71.4 percent. Interest and fees added to the balance push it higher still. A lender can require a cure or sell collateral when the contract’s threshold is reached.

Who holds my Bitcoin when I borrow against it?

Custodial arrangements

In a custodial loan, BTC moves to a lender or an independent custodian. The custody agreement should identify the legal custodian, the account in which the coins are held, who controls withdrawal instructions, whether assets are segregated, and what happens if the lender or custodian becomes insolvent.

A specific SEC-filed Fold/Two Prime facility places all collateral with BitGo Trust under a tri-party account-control agreement. Its disclosure says the lender receives a first-priority security interest but may not lend, invest, re-pledge, rehypothecate, or otherwise use or encumber the collateral. Those protections apply to that facility; they are not a rule for every lender.

Shared-signature escrow

BTCBacked describes a different model: a 2-of-3 multisignature escrow in which the borrower, lender, and platform each hold one key. Two signatures are required to move funds. The provider says a borrower can keep one key on a hardware wallet and that loan and collateral movements are verifiable on-chain. These are the provider’s stated features, not an independent verification or a general property of Bitcoin loans.

Custody is different from collateral rights

A custodian can hold the private keys while the lender has the contractual right to direct a sale after a defined default or price trigger. Before signing, ask:

  • Which legal entity is the custodian?
  • Who controls keys and withdrawal instructions?
  • Are my coins segregated from company assets?
  • Can the lender lend, invest, re-pledge, or rehypothecate them?
  • What happens to the collateral if either company fails?
  • How and how quickly are coins released after full repayment?

Can a Bitcoin lender lend out or rehypothecate my collateral?

Only the agreement can answer that question. The Fold/Two Prime filing expressly prohibits lending, investing, re-pledging, rehypothecation, and other use of the collateral, while allowing access only under the master loan agreement. Other products may use different language or permit reuse. Do not infer “cold storage,” “non-custodial,” or “segregated” from marketing alone; read the custody and security-interest clauses together.

What does 50% LTV mean?

LTV is the debt balance divided by the current market value of collateral:

LTV = loan balance ÷ current collateral value × 100

A 50 percent LTV means $50 of debt for each $100 of BTC value at that moment. Lower starting LTV gives more room for a price decline. Interest that accrues to principal, unpaid fees, or a falling BTC price increases LTV.

Some agreements use the inverse measure, collateral coverage:

Collateral coverage = current collateral value ÷ debt balance × 100

At 150 percent coverage, collateral is worth 1.5 times the debt, equivalent to roughly 66.7 percent LTV. Because the denominators differ, percentages from two providers cannot be compared until you convert them to the same formula.

When will I get a margin call?

A margin call is a requirement to restore the collateral ratio. The usual cures are adding BTC or paying down part of the loan. A call is not the same as liquidation: it may give you a contractual cure period, but the length and permitted actions vary.

The United States Bitcoin and Crypto ETF filing describes a call at 130 percent collateral coverage and requires additional Bitcoin or partial repayment within 24 hours. Lantern currently states a 72-hour grace period after a margin call for its product. BTCBacked says it sends warnings at 75, 80, and 85 percent LTV before a 90 percent liquidation level. These examples cannot be generalized to another lender.

Before borrowing, determine:

  • Which exchange, index, or reference rate values BTC?
  • How often is the ratio recalculated, and are prices sampled continuously?
  • Is an alert contractual or merely an informational message?
  • Exactly when does the cure clock start, including weekends and holidays?
  • Can you cure with BTC, cash, a partial repayment, or only one of those?
  • Can the lender sell part of the collateral or the entire position?

Can my Bitcoin be liquidated without warning?

Yes, some agreements permit it. The Fold/Two Prime filing says the lender may instruct the custodian to liquidate when collateral falls below the transaction’s liquidation level without prior notice. Other products promise a grace period, but a notification policy is not necessarily a contractual guarantee. Fast markets can move through a threshold before you can transfer funds or respond to an alert.

Read the default and remedies sections for the price source, valuation time, execution method, minimum sale size, slippage policy, and fees. Confirm whether the lender can act during a disputed valuation or technical outage. Keep any cure funds available in an account that can move within the stated window; a transfer that arrives after the deadline may not prevent a sale.

What happens to leftover Bitcoin after liquidation?

The agreement should state the order of payments. A typical waterfall may apply sale proceeds to principal, accrued interest, enforcement costs, and a liquidation fee, with any surplus returned to the borrower. The exact order and timing are product-specific.

BTCBacked says that, under its published description, the lender is paid first, a 5 percent fee on the original loan amount is taken from what remains, and residual BTC is sent to the borrower’s refund address. Its page also states liquidation at 90 percent LTV or when the loan reaches maturity unpaid. Verify the destination address and the process for changing it before depositing collateral. Do not assume another lender will return surplus in the same way.

Are Bitcoin-backed loan rates fixed or variable?

A fixed-rate term loan keeps the stated rate for the agreed term, while a variable line of credit can change. Strike states that its term-loan APR remains fixed until refinance, consolidation, or closure. It describes its line-of-credit APR as variable and recalculated quarterly, with interest accruing only on amounts drawn rather than on the unused limit. Those are Strike’s published terms, not a market-wide rule.

Lantern lists a Bitcoin starting APR of 10 percent, composed of an 8 percent base rate and a 2 percent upfront fee included in the stated starting APR. Its page lists a 12-month term, a $1,000 minimum, and no early principal repayment penalty. The page was updated October 9, 2026; obtain a current written offer because rates and eligibility can change.

BTCBacked lists a platform fee equal to 1.5 percent per year of the loan term, charged once, and a 5 percent fee on the original loan amount if liquidation occurs under its stated conditions. These figures describe that marketplace’s product, not a standard Bitcoin-loan schedule.

What fees should I compare besides interest?

Compare the total dollar cost over the period you expect to borrow, not just the headline APR. Check:

  • Whether the rate is fixed, variable, or subject to repricing.
  • Whether interest is calculated on drawn funds, the full commitment, or accrued debt.
  • Whether interest compounds or is added to the balance at a stated interval.
  • Upfront, origination, platform, custody, valuation, network, conversion, and withdrawal charges.
  • Minimum loan sizes and minimum interest periods.
  • Late, maturity-extension, refinance, and default charges.
  • Early repayment penalties or discounts.
  • Liquidation fees, sale spreads, and who pays enforcement costs.

Ask whether an advertised APR already includes fees and what loan size, LTV, jurisdiction, and borrower profile the quote assumes. Request an amortization or payoff figure showing principal, accrued interest, and every fee.

How to review a Bitcoin loan before signing

  1. Map the custody chain. Write down the custodian, account structure, key holders, segregation terms, insurance language, and insolvency treatment.
  2. Translate every ratio. Convert LTV and collateral-coverage percentages to one formula and calculate the BTC price that would reach each trigger.
  3. Model interest growth. Add the stated rate, compounding method, upfront charges, and a late-payment scenario to your debt balance.
  4. Read the call mechanics. Note the reference-price source, monitoring frequency, trigger time, cure deadline, accepted cures, and whether notice is guaranteed.
  5. Read the liquidation waterfall. Identify partial-versus-full sale rights, execution price, slippage, fees, repayment priority, and surplus-return procedure.
  6. Check repayment and maturity. Confirm the currency, payment dates, early repayment rules, refinance terms, and what happens on the maturity date.
  7. Verify access conditions. Confirm supported country, identity checks, minimum amount, loan currency, collateral type, and documentation before transferring BTC.
  8. Keep a risk buffer. Borrow less than the maximum if a forced sale would be unacceptable, and maintain a practical way to deliver collateral or cash within the cure window.

What are the main risks?

  • Price volatility: BTC can cross a maintenance threshold quickly, leaving little time to cure.
  • Refinancing and maturity risk: A loan can become due even if the collateral price has not recovered.
  • Custodian and lender risk: Key control, segregation, insolvency treatment, and permitted reuse determine what happens if a service provider fails.
  • Variable-rate risk: A repricing line can increase the debt even when BTC is flat.
  • Execution risk: A liquidation sale may occur at a volatile price and include spreads or fees.
  • Legal and tax uncertainty: Borrowing against BTC does not automatically avoid tax. Treatment depends on jurisdiction and individual facts; consult a qualified adviser.

No representative market-wide statistic establishes a typical Bitcoin lending rate, default rate, liquidation frequency, or borrower outcome. Published percentages from an issuer filing or provider page should be treated as that product’s terms, not an industry average.

Questions to ask the lender

  • Who owns the BTC while it is pledged, and who can authorize a transfer?
  • May the collateral be lent, invested, re-pledged, or rehypothecated?
  • What exact formula and reference price determine LTV or coverage?
  • What are the call and liquidation thresholds, and how long is the cure period?
  • Can liquidation happen without notice or during a pricing dispute?
  • Which fees are included in APR, and what is the payoff amount today?
  • How is surplus collateral returned after a sale?
  • What happens if the lender, custodian, or platform becomes insolvent?
  • Which country’s law governs the agreement, and is the product available to me?
