Short answer: An exchange is the easiest place to buy and trade Bitcoin, but the exchange controls the keys and can delay or stop withdrawals. A software wallet gives you direct control and is practical for everyday spending, while its internet-connected phone or computer remains an attack target. A hardware wallet keeps signing keys offline and is generally the strongest fit for long-term self-custody, provided you protect the recovery phrase and verify every transaction.

What Bitcoin custody means

Custody is the question of who controls the private keys that authorize Bitcoin transactions. The blockchain records ownership through spendable outputs, but moving those coins requires a valid digital signature from the corresponding private key. Whoever controls that key controls the ability to spend.

The phrase “not your keys, not your coins” describes this distinction. An account balance shown by a service is not the same as holding the signing keys yourself. If another party holds the keys, you depend on its security, solvency, internal controls and withdrawal policies. If you hold the keys, no exchange approval is required, but every backup and security decision becomes your responsibility.

Exchange or custodial account

With exchange custody, the service holds or controls the private keys. You log in, see an account balance and request a withdrawal when you want to move Bitcoin. The service must authorize and process that withdrawal.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

This model is convenient for active trading and for people who are not ready to manage wallet backups. Its risks are different from wallet risks: the exchange can be hacked, become insolvent, freeze an account, suffer an outage or change its withdrawal rules. A password reset or identity check may restore access under the service’s policies, but you cannot independently sign a transaction when the custodian controls the keys.

Software wallet

A software wallet is an application on a phone or computer that manages private keys. It is self-custody only when you, not the application provider, control those keys and the wallet’s recovery phrase.

Software wallets are convenient for frequent, smaller payments. The trade-off is that the keys are used on an internet-connected general-purpose device. Malware, a compromised operating system, a malicious browser extension or a fake wallet application can expose keys or alter a destination address. A strong device passcode and current software reduce risk, but they do not turn a connected device into an offline signer.

Hardware wallet

A hardware wallet is a dedicated signing device designed to generate and keep private keys offline. Your computer or phone prepares a transaction, the device displays the transaction details and signs it internally, and the signed transaction is then broadcast.

Because the private key does not need to enter a general-purpose operating system, a hardware wallet reduces the attack paths associated with ordinary malware and operating-system compromise. Bitcoin.org describes this category as the best balance between very high security and ease of use. The device can also support recovery if it is lost: the recovery phrase, not the physical device itself, is what restores access.

Exchange, software and hardware custody compared

Criterion Exchange account Software wallet Hardware wallet
Who controls signing keys? The exchange or another custodian You, if the wallet is genuinely self-custodial You, with signing performed on the dedicated device
Primary attack surface Custodian security, solvency, account controls and withdrawal systems Internet-connected phone or computer, wallet software and user backups Recovery phrase, physical device, transaction-screen verification and setup process
Best fit Buying, selling and active trading Everyday payments and smaller balances Long-term holdings and larger balances
Convenience Highest for trading because no wallet setup is required Quick to use once installed Requires physical setup and confirmation on the device
Recovery method Account-recovery and identity procedures set by the custodian A correctly stored recovery phrase A correctly stored recovery phrase; the device can be replaced
What can block access? Outages, withdrawal holds, account freezes or custodian failure Lost or exposed recovery phrase, device compromise or forgotten wallet credentials Lost or exposed recovery phrase, damaged device or a transaction you approve incorrectly

No current comparable statistic establishes the probability of failure or theft for each model. The useful distinction is qualitative: custodial accounts add counterparty dependence, software wallets add connected-device exposure and hardware wallets isolate signing more effectively while demanding more careful backup and verification.

Which model fits your situation?

You trade frequently

Keeping a working balance on an exchange avoids repeated deposits and withdrawals. Treat that balance as money exposed to the exchange’s operational and financial risks, not as a permanent savings vault. Move amounts you do not need for near-term trading to a wallet you control.

You make regular, smaller payments

A self-custodial software wallet is usually the practical choice. It keeps payments under your control without requiring a separate device for every transaction. Use a dedicated wallet application obtained from its legitimate publisher, keep the phone or computer updated and limit the wallet to an amount you could afford to replace.

You are holding Bitcoin for years

A hardware wallet is generally the strongest fit. It keeps signing keys offline and limits dependence on the security of a general-purpose operating system. The security benefit is lost if you photograph the recovery phrase, type it into a website or approve an address without checking the hardware-wallet screen.

You are not ready to manage backups

Do not move funds into self-custody until you understand the recovery process. An exchange may be easier while you learn, but leaving a large balance there means accepting the custodian’s security, solvency and withdrawal risks. Self-custody is not automatically safer; it changes who must prevent and recover from mistakes.

How to move Bitcoin from an exchange to your wallet

Use the exchange’s withdrawal screen and the receiving address generated by your own wallet. Labels vary by service, but the safety sequence is consistent.

  1. Prepare the destination wallet. Finish setup and confirm that you have written the recovery phrase exactly as shown. Do not store it in a photo, notes app, email account or cloud drive.
  2. Copy the receiving address from the wallet. Use the wallet’s receive function. Prefer copying or scanning the address rather than typing it.
  3. Verify the address independently. Compare the complete address shown by the wallet with the address pasted into the exchange withdrawal form. If you use a hardware wallet, confirm the address on the device’s own screen; malware on the computer can replace an address displayed only on the computer.
  4. Enter the amount and review the network details. Make sure the exchange and wallet support the same Bitcoin network and that the amount, destination and any stated fee are what you expect.
  5. Send a small test amount first. Wait for the wallet to show the incoming transaction before moving a larger balance. A test does not make an incorrect address reversible, so it is an additional check, not a substitute for verification.
  6. Complete the exchange’s security confirmation. This may include a password, two-factor authentication or an email confirmation. Never give a recovery phrase or private key to support staff claiming to help with the withdrawal.
  7. Record the transfer. Keep the transaction identifier and note which wallet and backup contain the funds. Do not publish the recovery phrase or private key with those records.

Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed. If the destination address is wrong, the funds may be permanently unrecoverable; an exchange cannot normally retrieve coins sent to an address you do not control.

How to use a software wallet more safely

  • Confirm self-custody. The wallet should let you create or import a recovery phrase that you control. If a company can reset the wallet without that phrase, it may be custodial rather than self-custodial.
  • Protect the device. Use a strong unlock code, install operating-system and wallet updates, and avoid rooted or jailbroken devices for significant balances.
  • Separate spending from savings. Keep only a spending amount in the connected wallet. Use a more isolated setup for larger balances.
  • Check the full address. Malware can replace a copied address. Compare the beginning, middle and end of the destination address, and use a trusted display when available.
  • Keep the recovery phrase offline. Write it legibly on durable material and store copies in more than one secure physical location. Anyone who obtains the phrase can generally take the funds; no support desk can make an exposed phrase secret again.

How to set up a hardware wallet

  1. Buy through the manufacturer or an authorized reseller. Avoid second-hand devices and unsolicited listings. Inspect the packaging and device for signs of tampering.
  2. Initialize it yourself. Generate the recovery phrase during first use. Never accept a phrase supplied by a seller, printed in the box or sent by a stranger.
  3. Write the phrase offline. Make more than one physical backup and place the copies in separate secure locations. Do not photograph or upload the phrase.
  4. Create the device unlock protection. Choose a PIN or equivalent control that is not shared with anyone and keep a record of the recovery procedure separate from the phrase.
  5. Verify receiving addresses on the device. A computer can display a substituted address, while the hardware device is intended to show the address associated with its own signing keys.
  6. Approve only transactions you understand. Check the destination and amount on the hardware-wallet screen before signing. Signing is authorization, not a preview that can be undone later.
  7. Test recovery before committing a large balance. Follow the wallet’s documented recovery process with a spare device or a controlled amount, without exposing the phrase to an internet-connected device.

Recovery phrases, loss and inheritance

If the hardware device is lost or damaged

The device is replaceable when you still have the correct recovery phrase. Restore that phrase on a compatible replacement device according to its documented process. Treat anyone asking you to “verify” the phrase online as a likely theft attempt.

If the recovery phrase is lost

A lost phrase can leave you unable to restore a self-custodial wallet after the phone, computer or hardware device fails. There is no central password-reset service for a wallet whose keys you alone control. Check every secure backup location you documented, but do not guess words or reorder them casually.

If the recovery phrase is exposed

Assume the funds are at risk. Move the Bitcoin to a newly generated wallet with a new phrase, following a clean setup process. Do not continue using an exposed phrase simply because no theft has appeared yet.

Planning for incapacity or death

Self-custody requires an inheritance plan. Document that a wallet exists, explain the recovery process to the person who must use it and store instructions separately from the phrase. Give enough information for recovery without placing the phrase in a shared email, cloud folder or ordinary safe with uncontrolled access. Review the plan when you change wallets or backups.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Leaving a long-term balance on an exchange: move savings to self-custody after you have tested the wallet and backups.
  • Calling any app “self-custody”: verify that you control the private keys and recovery phrase.
  • Typing a phrase into a website or support chat: stop immediately and treat the phrase as compromised; create a new wallet and transfer funds.
  • Skipping the hardware-wallet screen: reject the transaction until the address and amount match what you intended.
  • Keeping only one backup: create a second secure physical copy in a different location, while limiting who can access either copy.
  • Sending a large amount without a test: send a small amount first, confirm receipt and then perform the larger transfer.
  • Assuming a transaction can be canceled: review every detail before signing or broadcasting because Bitcoin transfers are irreversible.

What “not your keys, not your coins” does—and does not—mean

The slogan is a custody warning, not a claim that every exchange balance is fraudulent or that every personal wallet is safe. Custodial users trade independent key control for convenience and account-based recovery. Self-custodial users remove that counterparty dependence but assume full responsibility for device security, recovery-phrase secrecy, backups and transaction accuracy.

Bitcoin.org summarizes the trade-off this way: “When you hold your own private keys, you control your bitcoin—but you are also responsible for keeping it secure.” Choose the model whose responsibilities you can reliably perform, and use different custody methods for trading money, spending money and long-term savings when that separation helps you manage risk.

U.S. regulatory terminology

In a May 5, 2025 submission, the SEC Crypto Task Force stated that self-custody wallets are not custodians under U.S. securities law when users retain exclusive control of the private keys. That is a U.S.-specific regulatory statement. It does not guarantee the safety of a wallet, resolve tax or other legal obligations, or reduce the operational responsibility of protecting keys and backups.
