A company can plan to hold Bitcoin for the long term and still need cash to pay payroll, electricity bills, equipment costs, debt service, and other obligations. A large Bitcoin balance is not the same as money immediately available for those bills. Companies bridge the gap with operating cash flow, share sales, borrowing, Bitcoin sales or other forms of monetization—and each option has trade-offs.
Why a company holding Bitcoin still needs cash
Bitcoin is an asset, not a payment plan. Its value can rise or fall, and converting it into spendable funds may involve selling it, borrowing against it, or arranging other financing. Meanwhile, operating expenses and scheduled payments come due whether Bitcoin prices are rising or falling.
MARA Holdings illustrates the difference between a valuable reserve and cash available for obligations. In its 2025 Form 10-K, the company warned: “Since we currently do not generate significant revenue from other business activities, a prolonged downturn in bitcoin’s price could make it difficult to cover operational expenses, service debt or fund strategic initiatives.” The warning is specific to MARA’s business and risk disclosure; it is not a forecast for every company that holds Bitcoin. There is no single funding model. A company may combine several sources, and the practical availability of each depends on its business, financing terms, and market conditions.

- Operating cash flow: Revenue from mining or other business activities can pay expenses, but it may not be sufficient or steady enough to cover all costs and obligations.
- Share issuance: Selling shares can raise cash without selling Bitcoin, but it increases the share count and may dilute existing shareholders. The amount a company can raise depends on investor demand and market conditions.
- Borrowing: Debt or credit can supply cash, but adds interest, repayment obligations, and potentially collateral-related risks.
- Bitcoin sales or other monetization: Selling Bitcoin creates cash but reduces the reserve. Borrowing against or otherwise activating holdings can raise liquidity while changing the risk attached to those assets.
MARA’s filings describe cash, at-the-market (ATM) equity issuance, credit, Bitcoin monetization or sales, and debt repayment as elements of its liquidity management. The figures below come from different reporting dates and should not be treated as a single snapshot. Cash, digital assets, debt, and financing capacity are distinct measures.

“Hold forever” is a policy, not a guarantee
MARA’s disclosures show how a company’s Bitcoin policy can change as operating and financing needs evolve. Its 2024 annual report said it adopted a full holding, or “HODL,” approach on July 25, 2024, retaining all Bitcoin mined while allowing strategic open-market purchases. In its 2025 annual report, MARA said it later allowed sales of Bitcoin generated from operations. Its 2026 filing says it had expanded the strategy to allow sales of Bitcoin already on its balance sheet. These are dated decisions by one company, not proof that every Bitcoin treasury will sell. Why a miner is not the same as a Bitcoin treasury company
A Bitcoin miner or digital-infrastructure operator has an operating business, with revenues, costs, equipment needs, and capital spending. Its liquidity depends partly on how that business performs. A company whose main strategy is accumulating Bitcoin through capital markets may have a different relationship between operating revenue, financing, and its reserve.

The Associated Press reported that Strategy began buying Bitcoin with reserve cash in 2020 and later used stock sales and debt to expand its holdings. It also described the risk that a price downturn could prompt large selloffs among treasury companies. What to check when assessing a company’s ability to keep holding
A Bitcoin balance alone cannot establish whether a company can cover expenses without selling. A useful assessment separates current liquidity, future obligations, and financing that might not be available on the same terms in a downturn.

- Operating cash flow and cash burn: Does the core business generate cash, or consume it?
- Cash versus Bitcoin: How much unrestricted cash is available, and how much of the reported asset value is held in Bitcoin or restricted assets?
- Debt burden and timing: What principal repayments, maturities, and interest or coupon costs are due, and has the company repurchased debt?
- Financing dependence: How much equity-issuance capacity remains, and would access depend on market appetite?
- Availability of Bitcoin holdings: Is Bitcoin pledged, lent, otherwise activated, or available for sale?
- Current reserve policy: Does management permit sales, and when was that policy last disclosed or changed?
- Competing cash needs: What capital spending and other claims on liquidity must be funded?
These checks must be applied company by company. The available disclosures do not provide a harmonized, current comparison across the corporate Bitcoin market, so MARA’s figures should not be read as a sector average.
How to interpret claims about surviving a bear market without selling
A 2025 arXiv preprint abstract proposes testing disclosed company metrics against an 18-to-24-month bear-market horizon to examine whether companies could avoid liquidation. That is the authors’ proposed stress-test period, not an observed survival statistic or a demonstrated cash runway for any named company. 2025 arXiv preprint abstract.

Whether a particular company could hold through a downturn depends on its actual cash, operating performance, debt schedule, financing access, asset restrictions, and management policy. A large reserve value by itself does not answer that question.
