Yes—under U.S. federal tax rules, paying for a coffee with Bitcoin is a reportable digital-asset disposition, even when the purchase is only a few dollars. Bitcoin is treated as property, not foreign currency. If you held the Bitcoin as a capital asset, compare the U.S.-dollar value of what you received (the coffee and any related consideration) with the adjusted basis of the Bitcoin you spent. The difference is generally a capital gain or loss reported on Form 8949 and Schedule D.
You also answer “Yes” to the digital-asset question on Form 1040 when you made such a payment during the tax year. A broker’s reporting threshold and the absence of Form 1099-DA do not erase your own reporting obligation.
What the IRS means by a Bitcoin coffee payment
Internal Revenue Service Notice 2014-21 states: “For federal tax purposes, virtual currency is treated as property. General tax principles applicable to property transactions apply to transactions using virtual currency.” Spending Bitcoin therefore works like exchanging property for something else. You dispose of a portion of your Bitcoin and receive goods or services in return.
The IRS digital-asset questionnaire specifically includes this situation: “You paid for goods or services of any dollar amount (example: a cup of coffee) with digital assets.” The agency’s digital-assets guidance likewise describes a disposal as an exchange for property, goods, or services “in any amount.” A $3 purchase and a $300 purchase are treated the same way for identifying the disposal.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
This is a federal-income-tax rule. State, local, and non-U.S. tax systems can use different definitions, thresholds, or exemptions, so do not assume the federal result answers those filings.
Is there a small-payment or personal-use exception?
The cited IRS guidance does not provide a general personal-use or de minimis exception for buying inexpensive items with Bitcoin. The size of the bill does not determine whether a disposal occurred. Your calculation might produce a gain, a loss, or an amount close to zero, but you still identify the transaction when answering the Form 1040 digital-asset question and preparing the applicable schedules.
De minimis language that appears in broker Form 1099-DA rules concerns what a broker must report to the IRS and to you. It is an information-reporting rule for the broker, not a safe harbor that makes your own payment tax-free or reportable only above a particular amount.
How to calculate the gain or loss
For Bitcoin held as a capital asset, the general calculation is:
Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis
- Amount realized: generally the fair-market value in U.S. dollars of the coffee and any related consideration at the time of payment.
- Adjusted basis: your cost in the specific Bitcoin units spent, adjusted as required by the tax rules. Your records must support how you identified those units and their cost.
- Result: a positive number is a gain; a negative number is a loss.
Record the date and time of the payment, the quantity of Bitcoin, the U.S.-dollar value used for the purchase, transaction fees, and the acquisition date and cost basis of the units spent. Keep the merchant receipt and the wallet or exchange transaction record so the valuation and unit identification can be reconstructed.

Illustrative examples
The following figures are examples to show the mechanics, not a tax result for any particular taxpayer.
| Payment | Dollar value received | Basis of Bitcoin spent | Illustrative result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coffee A | $4.00 | $2.50 | $1.50 capital gain |
| Coffee B | $4.00 | $6.00 | $2.00 capital loss |
| Coffee C | $4.00 | $4.00 | Approximately no gain or loss |
Fees should be captured at the transaction level. Apply the treatment required by the Form 8949 instructions and your tax software or professional preparer rather than dropping fees from the records or assuming every platform handles them identically.

- Collect the transaction evidence. Save the merchant receipt, wallet or exchange statement, transaction ID, payment date and time, Bitcoin quantity, U.S.-dollar value, and all stated fees.
- Identify the units and basis. Determine the acquisition date and adjusted basis for the Bitcoin units used. Use a method you can document consistently. If the units came from multiple wallets, transfers, staking, compensation, or gifts, trace the relevant history before calculating the result.
- Classify how you held the Bitcoin. Bitcoin held as an investment or other capital asset generally follows the capital-gain workflow below. Bitcoin received for services or held for sale to customers can involve ordinary-income or business reporting instead.
- Calculate each disposal. Compare the U.S.-dollar amount realized with the adjusted basis of the units spent. Keep the calculation with the transaction record, including the holding period.
- Complete Form 8949. For each capital-asset disposal, enter the asset description, acquisition and disposal dates, proceeds, basis, any required adjustment, and resulting gain or loss. Follow the current form instructions for listing transactions individually or attaching an approved statement when your software supports a consolidated attachment.
- Carry the totals to Schedule D (Form 1040). Schedule D summarizes the capital gains and deductible capital losses reported from Form 8949.
- Answer the Form 1040 digital-asset question. A payment for goods or services is a disposition, so answer “Yes” when the question applies to your tax year. Do not answer based solely on whether you received a broker statement.
- Retain the supporting file. Keep the source records and calculations for the period required by the tax rules that apply to your return. You need enough evidence to establish the positions reported, not merely a yearly total from an app.
What to enter on Form 8949
Form 8949 is the transaction detail behind Schedule D. A coffee payment is not entered as a credit-card purchase; it is entered as a disposal of the Bitcoin. Your description can identify the asset and transaction, while the dates, proceeds, basis, adjustments, and gain or loss document the calculation.
Digital-asset activity can generate many small lines. Tax software may import or consolidate transactions, but review the resulting attachment against your own wallet, exchange, and payment-processor history. Consolidation does not excuse missing basis, unsupported dates, or omitted dispositions.
What if you did not receive Form 1099-DA?
You still report the transaction when required. IRS guidance for 2026 states that taxpayers must report related digital-asset income, gains, or losses whether or not Form 1099-DA arrives. A broker’s de minimis or aggregate threshold determines what that broker reports; it does not turn your payment into a non-event.

When a 1099-DA is issued, reconcile it with your complete records. The form may not include activity from a self-custody wallet, another exchange, a payment processor, or transfers between your own addresses. Treat it as one source of information, not as a complete history of every disposal.

Recordkeeping checklist for every Bitcoin payment
- Merchant receipt showing what was purchased and the amount charged.
- Date and time of the payment, with the relevant time zone if the platform records one.
- Bitcoin quantity sent and the transaction ID or equivalent wallet reference.
- Fair-market value in U.S. dollars used at the time of payment and how the platform displayed it.
- Network, exchange, or processing fees and whether they were deducted from the Bitcoin sent or charged separately.
- Acquisition date, original cost, and adjusted basis for the units spent.
- Evidence supporting your unit-identification method when several lots could have been used.
- Wallet, exchange, and payment-processor statements that allow the transaction to be traced from acquisition to disposal.
The IRS says taxpayers must maintain records documenting “receipts, sales, exchanges, or other dispositions of virtual currency and the fair market value of the virtual currency.” A spreadsheet can work if it preserves the underlying evidence and calculations; an unexplained annual estimate is not a substitute for transaction-level support.
When the capital-asset workflow does not fit
Bitcoin held as an investment or personal capital asset
If you acquired Bitcoin for investment or personal use and then spent it, the disposal generally goes through Form 8949 and Schedule D. The holding period and basis of the particular units determine the character and amount of the result under the ordinary capital-asset rules.
Bitcoin received for work
Digital assets received as compensation can create ordinary income when received. Spending those assets later is a separate disposition that may require a second calculation using the basis established when the compensation was recognized. The Form 1040 instructions and the facts of the activity determine which ordinary-income form or schedule applies.
Bitcoin held for sale to customers
A business that holds digital assets as inventory or sells them to customers does not use the same treatment as an individual investor’s capital asset. Ordinary-income and business reporting, including possible Schedule C treatment, can apply. Keep business and personal wallets and records distinct so each transaction is classified correctly.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Ignoring payments below a round-number threshold
Why it fails: The IRS example expressly covers a cup of coffee and says goods or services of any dollar amount count.
Better approach: Capture every payment and let the calculation determine whether it produced a gain, loss, or near-zero result.
Waiting for a 1099-DA
Why it fails: Self-custody and cross-platform activity may never appear on a broker form, and the taxpayer obligation is not conditioned on receiving one.
Better approach: Build the transaction list from wallets, exchanges, and payment processors, then use any 1099-DA as a reconciliation point.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUsing the coffee price as the Bitcoin basis
Why it fails: The coffee’s value is generally the amount realized; basis comes from what you paid for the Bitcoin units spent, with required adjustments.

Reporting only a net annual number
Why it fails: Form 8949 requires transaction detail or an authorized supporting statement, and the IRS expects records for receipts, sales, exchanges, and other dispositions.
Better approach: Preserve a line-level ledger and verify that imported or consolidated entries agree with your source records.

When professional help is sensible
Consider a qualified tax professional when basis is missing, you used many wallets or exchanges, transactions include compensation or business inventory, records conflict, or you moved between jurisdictions. Bring the raw statements, transaction IDs, receipts, and your calculation file. A professional can determine the appropriate federal forms and address state or local rules, but you remain responsible for supplying complete information.
Federal scope and the practical answer
For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, every Bitcoin coffee payment is a digital-asset disposition, regardless of the dollar amount. If the Bitcoin was a capital asset, calculate the U.S.-dollar value received minus the adjusted basis of the units spent, report the result through Form 8949 and Schedule D, and answer “Yes” to the Form 1040 digital-asset question. Keep transaction-level records and report the activity even when no Form 1099-DA is issued.
