This U.S.-focused guide covers how to buy Bitcoin, check for scams, choose where to hold it, and keep tax records. Rules differ outside the United States, so readers elsewhere should check local requirements. Buying Bitcoin is not risk-free: its price can fall, transfers may be hard to reverse, and custody choices carry different responsibilities.

How to buy Bitcoin safely

  1. Stop if someone is pressuring you. Do not buy Bitcoin because a caller, online contact, romantic partner, supposed government office, or investment adviser says you must act urgently or send it to an address for safekeeping. Government agencies do not create personal Bitcoin accounts to protect your money. The FTC warns that scammers may pressure people to buy cryptocurrency and transfer it, and recovery may not be possible. Read the FTC’s cryptocurrency scam guidance and its alert about Bitcoin ATM scams.
  2. Choose a purchase route and verify the provider. Bitcoin may be available through an exchange, app, website, or cryptocurrency ATM. These are purchase routes, not endorsements. Before using one, independently search the provider’s name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint,” as the FTC advises. Check that you are using the provider’s genuine website or app, not a link sent by a stranger.
  3. Review the full transaction before confirming. Check the displayed Bitcoin price, any disclosed spread or markup, funding method, transaction and withdrawal fees, purchase limits, and rules for moving Bitcoin off the service. Compare the total cost and terms rather than relying on a headline fee. Fees, limits, and availability vary by provider and can change; there is no universal current fee or platform ranking.
  4. Decide how you will hold it. You can leave Bitcoin with a provider or move it to a wallet you control. A wallet holds the private keys that authorize access to Bitcoin; it does not hold the Bitcoin itself. Self-custody means you take responsibility for protecting those keys and recovery information.
  5. Keep records from the first transaction. Save the date and time, quantity, U.S.-dollar value, fees, confirmations, and information needed to establish your tax basis. The IRS says digital-asset transactions may need to be reported whether or not they result in a gain or loss.

Where to buy Bitcoin—and what to check

An exchange, app, website, or cryptocurrency ATM can provide a way to buy Bitcoin, but the route alone does not establish that a provider is trustworthy or suitable. Verify the provider independently and read its purchase, custody, and withdrawal terms before sending money.

Before confirming a purchase, make sure you understand the amount of Bitcoin you will receive and the total dollar cost. A displayed price may not reflect every charge: review any spread or markup disclosed by the provider, funding charges, transaction fees, and any fee or minimum for withdrawing Bitcoin. Also check purchase limits and whether withdrawals are available when you want them. Current fees, regional availability, and terms must be checked directly with each provider.

Who controls the Bitcoin’s keys?

The main custody decision is whether a provider controls the private keys or you do. The SEC explains that crypto wallets store the private keys or passcodes used to access crypto assets—not the assets themselves—in its crypto custody bulletin.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Option Who controls the keys? Main trade-off
Provider or exchange custody The provider controls them. Convenient access may come with dependence on the provider’s security, custody practices, withdrawal terms, and continued operation.
Hot wallet self-custody You control them through an internet-connected wallet. You control access, but must protect credentials and guard against phishing, malware, and device compromise.
Cold wallet self-custody You control them; a cold wallet keeps keys offline. Physical devices are one option. Offline key storage reduces some online exposure, but requires secure setup and careful protection of recovery information. A physical device may cost money.

Provider or exchange custody

Leaving Bitcoin with a provider may be simpler for access, but you rely on that provider to safeguard the keys and honor its withdrawal terms. A platform can fail. Do not assume that an account at a familiar crypto service is equivalent to a bank deposit or securities account; the SEC warns that Bitcoin and other virtual-currency investments do not carry the same protections as those accounts. Review current provider terms and applicable rules rather than assuming a particular protection applies.

Hot wallet self-custody

An internet-connected wallet lets you control the keys, but it also makes protecting access credentials your responsibility. Use care with links, messages, and requests to reveal recovery information. The FTC warns that cryptocurrency lost through theft or scams may not be recoverable.

Cold wallet self-custody

A cold wallet keeps private keys offline; a physical hardware device is one possible form. It is an optional tool, not an automatic safety upgrade or a requirement for every Bitcoin owner. You still need to understand the device’s setup and recovery process and protect its recovery information. If you lose the information needed to regain access, you may lose access to the Bitcoin.

How to choose

Consider who controls the keys, exposure to online compromise, what happens if a device or credential is lost, reliance on a provider, convenience for access and transfers, and total cost. The right balance depends on how you expect to use Bitcoin and how confidently you can manage recovery information; no single custody method is best for everyone.

Risks to understand before buying

  • Price volatility: Bitcoin’s price can change sharply, and you can lose value.
  • Loss or theft: Platforms can fail, while theft, malware, mistakes, or compromised access can result in lost Bitcoin.
  • Transfers can be difficult to recover: Sending Bitcoin to the wrong address or to a scammer is not like making a card payment that can routinely be reversed. Check the recipient and address carefully before confirming.
  • Misleading promises: Urgency, guaranteed returns, impersonation, and instructions to send Bitcoin to a “safe” wallet are warning signs. Do not send funds to someone who claims a transfer will fix a problem or protect your money.
  • Different account protections: Bitcoin held with a wallet or exchange does not have the same protections as bank deposits or securities accounts. Check the specific provider’s current terms and rules rather than assuming familiar account features apply.

The SEC’s Bitcoin and virtual-currency investor alert describes investment risks and the limits of protections. The FTC also explains why crypto transfers requested by scammers can be difficult or impossible to recover in its scam guidance.

U.S. federal taxes and Bitcoin records

For U.S. federal tax purposes, the IRS treats digital assets as property. Selling, exchanging, or otherwise disposing of Bitcoin may have to be reported even when the transaction does not produce a taxable gain or loss. Tax consequences depend on the facts of the transaction. See the IRS digital assets guidance.

For sales effected after 2025, the IRS’s 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions describe mandatory broker reporting of gross proceeds for digital assets, mandatory basis reporting for covered securities, and voluntary basis reporting for noncovered securities. Broker reporting does not replace your own recordkeeping or tax reporting responsibilities. For a situation-specific answer, consult current IRS materials or a qualified tax professional.
