Bitcoin’s move below $80,000 was a short-lived episode in a broader, two-stage market story—not one single trading session. Reuters recorded a sharp selloff on Jan. 31, 2026, while later reports described Bitcoin recovering toward or above $80,000 as Asian equities strengthened. The evidence points to changing dollar liquidity, Federal Reserve expectations, exchange-traded-fund demand and geopolitical headlines as the main forces behind the swings.
What happened when Bitcoin fell below $80,000?
Reuters reported Bitcoin at $78,719.63 at 12:48 p.m. Eastern time on Jan. 31, 2026. The cryptocurrency was down 6.53% and extending a decline that had begun in the previous session. That is the clearest documented instance of the drop referenced in the headline.
The selloff reflected a risk-off macroeconomic backdrop rather than a Bitcoin-specific technical failure. Reuters linked pressure to a stronger U.S. dollar and concern that incoming Federal Reserve chair Kevin Warsh could favor a smaller central-bank balance sheet. A tighter balance sheet can reduce the liquidity available for speculative assets, including cryptocurrencies.
Brian Jacobsen, chief economist at Annex Wealth Management, said, “Sometimes these price adjustments feed on themselves.” He argued that the Fed’s “bloated balance sheet combined with heavy-handed bank regulation” had left liquidity trapped on Wall Street, helping inflate bubbles in bonds, crypto, metals and meme stocks. In that environment, a decline can accelerate as traders reduce risk and forced selling adds to the initial move.

How did Bitcoin recover?
May 4 rebound toward $81,000
Bloomberg later reported Bitcoin rising as much as 2.1% to $80,594 on May 4, 2026. That was the cryptocurrency’s highest level since Jan. 31 and put it back above the $80,000 threshold. The move coincided with changing expectations about efforts to resolve conflict in the Middle East, showing how geopolitical news had become an immediate catalyst for risk assets.
Another session tracked stronger Asian equities
The Block described a separate later session in which Bitcoin gained 2% to $79,110 while major Asian stock indexes also advanced. The Nikkei rose 1.4%, the Kospi 1.9%, the CSI 300 0.35% and the Hang Seng 0.06%. The co-movement does not prove that stocks caused Bitcoin’s rise, but it is consistent with a broader improvement in investor risk appetite.

Are buyers really defending $80,000?
There is evidence of demand near the level, but “defending” $80,000 should not be treated as a guarantee that the price will hold. U.S. spot-Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded $823.7 million of weekly inflows, according to SoSoValue, marking a fourth consecutive positive week. Those creations indicate sustained investor demand through regulated market vehicles, although weekly flows can reverse.

A sustained move through that range would improve the case that buyers had absorbed the earlier selling. Repeated failures below it would instead suggest that rallies are meeting supply. Price levels are observations, not support promises, and Bitcoin can move through them quickly when macroeconomic news changes.

What could move BTC next?
Federal Reserve policy and economic data
The next Fed meeting and incoming economic indicators are central catalysts. Signals that preserve abundant liquidity or reduce expectations of restrictive policy could support Bitcoin. Evidence of persistent inflation, higher interest rates or a deliberately smaller Fed balance sheet could strengthen the dollar and pressure speculative assets.
ETF flows
Investors should watch whether the four-week streak of positive U.S. spot-Bitcoin ETF flows continues. Continued creations would provide a demand cushion; outflows would remove one of the clearest recent sources of buying.

Geopolitical headlines and Asian risk appetite
Developments in the Middle East and the direction of Asian equity markets can change the risk mood rapidly. Gains in the Nikkei, Kospi, CSI 300 and Hang Seng accompanied one documented Bitcoin advance, but correlation can disappear when a central-bank announcement, currency move or security shock dominates trading.

How to read the headline’s chronology
No dated report in the available record matches the headline as one single event. The defensible interpretation is a chronology: a Jan. 31 selloff below $80,000, followed by later recoveries toward or above the level, including the May 4 move and the Asian-equity-linked session. Treating those reports as one simultaneous market reaction would merge separate sessions and obscure the different catalysts.
