For a specific Bitcoin payment, search its transaction ID (txid) in Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space. Both are supported starting points for checking whether a transaction is pending or confirmed; Blockstream’s documentation also describes the transaction details it displays. Choose based on the information you need and which interface is easier for you to read—not on claims of superior speed or accuracy, which the available evidence does not establish.
What a Bitcoin block explorer shows
A block explorer is a search interface for information recorded on a public blockchain. Enter a txid to open the record for a particular transaction. Blockstream says its Explorer can display transactions even when they are not yours.
A transaction page can show its status, confirmation count, inputs and outputs, and fee information, including the fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). These details help you check what the network has recorded; they do not reveal a person’s legal identity simply because an address appears on the page. Blockstream Explorer: detailed transaction lookup
Use Blockstream Explorer when you want a documented view of a transaction’s status and its inputs, outputs, fees, and confirmations. It supports Bitcoin and Liquid. Its public transaction lookup is useful for checking a payment whether or not it belongs to you.

mempool.space: a second view of pending activity
Blockstream’s help material identifies mempool.space as a public way to view mempool activity. It is a reasonable alternative when you are trying to understand a pending transaction. The available evidence does not establish a feature-by-feature advantage, comparative latency, uptime, or greater accuracy over other explorers, so choose based on the information and presentation you can verify on the live site.
Blockchain.com Explorer: broader chain coverage
Blockchain.com Explorer is the better fit when your task extends beyond a single Bitcoin transaction and you want a multi-chain explorer with latest transactions, blocks, and a broader dashboard. Its current page includes search for addresses, hashes, and blocks. Dashboard figures change over time, so treat them as live readings rather than stable reference values.

Esplora API and self-hosting: recurring or more private access
For repeated programmatic queries, Blockstream documents REST endpoints for indexed blockchain data, including UTXOs, balances, mempool information, and fees. The Esplora project also provides an open-source stack that technically capable users can investigate for self-hosting. Self-hosting may reduce reliance on a public lookup website, but it requires operating the relevant infrastructure.
Blockstream’s API page advertises a 99.9% uptime SLA for its commercial Explorer API offer. That is a vendor-stated guarantee, not an independent measurement, and it should not be taken as a performance claim about the free public explorer. Check the current API terms and offer details before relying on it.

How to track a Bitcoin transaction
- Get the txid. Copy the transaction ID from the wallet or service that sent the payment. It is the direct lookup key for one transaction.
- Open an explorer. Use Blockstream Explorer or mempool.space for a Bitcoin lookup; Blockchain.com Explorer is another option.
- Search the txid. Paste it into the explorer’s search field and open the matching transaction result. Confirm that the displayed transaction is the one you intended to check.
- Read the status and confirmations. A pending transaction remains in the mempool. A confirmed transaction has been included in a block; each subsequent block adds another confirmation.
- Inspect the fee details if it is pending. Check the fee and fee rate where displayed. A higher-fee transaction is generally more likely to be selected by miners sooner, but the fee display is only a snapshot of changing conditions and cannot predict an inclusion time with certainty.
Why a Bitcoin transaction may be unconfirmed
“Unconfirmed” means the transaction is still in the mempool rather than included in a block. Miners select transactions for blocks, and Blockstream’s help material says higher-fee transactions are generally selected sooner. A transaction’s fee rate can help explain its position amid fee competition, but mempool conditions change and no public explorer can make a miner include it by a particular time.
Use the explorer’s current status and fee information to understand what is visible now. Fee rates and any confirmation projections are estimates or snapshots, not guarantees. The explorer reports public network information; it does not control transaction processing.

How many confirmations are enough?
A confirmation is counted when a block includes the transaction. Every new block after that adds another confirmation. The appropriate number is a decision for the recipient, wallet, or service accepting the payment, based on transaction value and risk tolerance.

Privacy when looking up a transaction
Bitcoin transaction information is public, but that does not mean a public website lookup is private. Searching a public explorer can reveal your lookup interest to that service; the available sources do not establish a current comparative logging policy for these explorers. Do not assume an address is private merely because the ledger does not display its owner’s legal name.
If your privacy requirements make queries to a public explorer unsuitable, consider using your own node or investigating a self-hosted explorer. Esplora’s documentation describes self-hosting as an option: Esplora on GitHub.
