The most efficient machine in the published specifications here is the Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd at 9.5 J/TH, followed by the S23e Hyd 2U at 10 J/TH and the S21 XP+ Hyd at 11 J/TH. That ranking only describes energy used per unit of hashing. A profitable purchase also depends on hashprice, electricity, pool and hosting charges, cooling infrastructure, uptime, repairs, taxes, and the machine’s delivered cost. Use J/TH to compare the hardware, then calculate net cash flow and simple payback with the same assumptions for every model.
What ASIC efficiency means
Bitcoin ASIC efficiency is normally expressed as joules per terahash (J/TH). The equivalent steady-state measure is watts per terahash (W/TH):
J/TH = watts ÷ terahashes per second
A miner drawing 5,510 W and producing 580 TH/s therefore uses about 9.5 J for each terahash it computes. Lower J/TH is better because it requires less electricity to perform the same amount of hashing. Comparing only TH/s can favor a larger, power-hungry machine that earns more gross revenue but costs even more to run.

Published efficiency and power comparison
The following figures are catalogue specifications published by ASIC Miner Value in 2026. They are useful for a like-for-like hardware comparison, not a guarantee of field performance.
| Model | Hashrate | Wall power | Efficiency | Energy at continuous operation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitmain Antminer S23 Hyd | 580 TH/s (0.58 PH/s) | 5,510 W | 9.5 J/TH | 132.24 kWh per 24 hours |
| Bitmain Antminer S21 XP+ Hyd | 500 TH/s (0.50 PH/s) | 5,500 W | 11 J/TH | 132.00 kWh per 24 hours |
| Bitmain Antminer S23e Hyd 2U | 865 TH/s (0.865 PH/s) | 8,650 W | 10 J/TH | 207.60 kWh per 24 hours |
The daily energy figures are simple calculations from the published wattage multiplied by 24 hours; they do not include pumps, heat exchangers, fans, networking, or other facility loads unless those are already included in the stated wall-power figure.
What the ranking tells you
- The S23 Hyd has the lowest published energy use per terahash in this group at 9.5 J/TH.
- The S23e Hyd 2U is slightly less efficient at 10 J/TH but provides the highest absolute hashrate, which may matter when rack space, circuit capacity, or a hosting slot is limited.
- The S21 XP+ Hyd uses 11 J/TH. Its 5,500 W rating is nearly identical to the S23 Hyd’s 5,510 W rating, yet it produces 80 TH/s less.
How hashprice becomes gross Bitcoin revenue
Hashprice is the revenue rate assigned to mining capacity, usually quoted in US dollars per petahash per second per day (USD/PH/day). If the hashprice is H and your miner produces P PH/s:
Gross revenue per day = H × P
Using the catalogue hashrates, the S23 Hyd’s gross daily revenue is 0.58 × H, the S21 XP+ Hyd’s is 0.50 × H, and the S23e Hyd 2U’s is 0.865 × H. If uptime is 98%, multiply each result by 0.98. Pool fees then reduce the amount you actually receive; a 2% fee, for example, means multiplying gross revenue by 0.98.
There is no single permanent “current hashprice.” It changes with Bitcoin’s market price, transaction-fee income, network difficulty, and the amount of active hashpower. Refresh hashprice, difficulty, pool terms, and BTC price immediately before approving a purchase. A calculator that uses yesterday’s value can produce a very different payback result from one using today’s value.

Electricity cost is usually the decisive variable
For a miner’s stated wall power, daily electricity cost is:
Daily electricity cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × tariff in USD/kWh
| Model | Daily kWh from miner rating | Cost at tariff T (USD/kWh) |
|---|---|---|
| S23 Hyd | 132.24 | 132.24 × T |
| S21 XP+ Hyd | 132.00 | 132.00 × T |
| S23e Hyd 2U | 207.60 | 207.60 × T |
At an illustrative tariff of $0.05/kWh, the S23 Hyd’s miner-only energy bill would be $6.61 per day (132.24 × 0.05), before cooling and facility charges. That is an illustration of the formula, not a quoted contract rate.
Hashrate Index’s 2025 year-in-review, published in 2026, modeled 25–30 J/TH machines as able to support electricity costs of roughly 4–5 cents/kWh under its stated conditions. This is a modeled threshold, not a universal break-even price; newer 9.5–11 J/TH hardware can tolerate a different tariff, while older equipment, fees, downtime, and capital costs can erase the advantage.
An AMINA Bank and AlixPartners analysis of public miners reported a weighted-average electricity cost of 4.5 cents/kWh. In that sample, electricity represented about 68% of cash costs before the halving and 71% after it. Your contract may differ substantially, especially if demand charges, taxes, renewable credits, or a hosting markup are included.

From gross revenue to net profit
Use a complete daily cash-flow equation rather than a headline earnings number:
Net profit/day = gross revenue − pool fees − electricity − hosting − incremental cooling and operations
Include the following inputs separately so that an apparently cheap site cannot hide a missing cost:
- Pool percentage and any withdrawal or payout charges.
- Electricity at the meter, including demand or energy-market adjustments.
- Hosting rent, rack fees, management charges, and internet service.
- Pumps, heat exchangers, fans, water treatment, and other hydro or immersion auxiliaries.
- Expected uptime, maintenance windows, failed hashboards, warranty exclusions, and repair reserves.
- Taxes, insurance, financing interest, and the opportunity cost of capital.
ASIC.tools lists hashprice, hashrate, power, electricity, pool fee, uptime, and hardware cost as required calculator inputs. Its estimates warn that taxes, repairs, and cooling may be excluded, so treat the displayed result as operating sensitivity analysis rather than an accounting forecast.
Simple payback time and what it does not prove
Simple payback is:
Payback days = hardware cost ÷ positive net profit per day

Only a positive net-profit figure makes this calculation meaningful. If net profit is zero or negative, the machine has no finite payback under those assumptions. Convert days to months only for readability; a 30-day month is a convention, not a promise that revenue will remain constant.
ASIC Miner Group displayed a 24.2-month payback for the Antminer HYD S23 under its calculator assumptions in 2026. That number is tied to the calculator’s hashprice, tariff, fees, uptime, hardware price, and exclusions. It is not a guarantee for every buyer or location.
Worked comparison: S23 Hyd versus S21 XP+ Hyd
On the published specifications, the S23 Hyd produces 580 TH/s while the S21 XP+ Hyd produces 500 TH/s. The S23 therefore provides 16% more hashrate at almost the same nameplate power: 5,510 W versus 5,500 W.
At the same hashprice H and uptime, the gross-revenue advantage is:
0.58H − 0.50H = 0.08H per day
The miner-only energy difference is only 0.24 kWh per day (132.24 versus 132.00 kWh). At tariff T, that adds just 0.24T dollars per day before auxiliary loads. This is why the S23 has better revenue per watt on the published figures.

That advantage does not automatically make it the better investment. Let ΔC be the S23’s extra purchase and delivery cost, and let ΔO represent any additional daily hosting, cooling, or repair cost. The extra-capital payback is:
ΔC ÷ (0.08H − 0.24T − ΔO)
If the denominator is not positive, paying more for the S23 cannot recover its premium from operating cash flow under those assumptions. Delivery timing, warranty terms, hydro infrastructure, and financing can therefore reverse the ranking.

The S23e Hyd 2U is rated at 865 TH/s and 8,650 W, or 10 J/TH. It offers substantially more throughput per unit than either 5.5 kW model, but it also consumes 207.6 kWh per day from the miner rating. A site must have enough electrical capacity, heat-rejection capacity, and rack or container space for that load.

Compare the cost per deployed terahash, not only the machine price: a high-density unit can be attractive when infrastructure is scarce, yet uneconomic if its hosting tier charges for every additional kilowatt.
Cooling and electrical infrastructure belong in the efficiency calculation
Hydro and immersion arrangements can improve heat removal, but they add equipment and parasitic consumption. Confirm whether a listing’s wattage covers only the ASIC or the complete cooling loop. Count pumps, heat exchangers, control electronics, fans, water treatment, and standby equipment when they run continuously.
Electrical design matters as much as the ASIC label. A 5.5 kW miner running continuously draws about 132 kWh per day; an 8.65 kW unit draws about 208 kWh. Check circuit ratings, voltage, three-phase availability, distribution losses, protection, and the site’s demand-charge rules. A facility that cannot safely deliver the continuous load will have lower realized uptime regardless of the advertised J/TH.
A repeatable calculator workflow
- Record the machine data. Enter hashrate in PH/s, wall power in watts, and the stated J/TH. Keep manufacturer, catalogue, and measured values in separate notes.
- Set one market case. Enter the same hashprice, BTC price, network difficulty, pool fee, and uptime for every model. Add a low, middle, and high hashprice case rather than relying on one point estimate.
- Calculate gross revenue. Multiply USD/PH/day by PH/s, then apply uptime and pool fees.
- Calculate energy. Multiply watts by 24 and divide by 1,000. Multiply kWh by your actual tariff and add cooling or facility overhead.
- Subtract non-electric costs. Include hosting, monitoring, repairs, taxes, insurance, financing, and a realistic downtime reserve.
- Test capital recovery. Divide the delivered hardware cost—not merely the advertised machine price—by positive daily net profit. Record the result in days and months.
- Stress-test the result. Recalculate with a lower hashprice, a higher tariff, 95% uptime, a repair event, and a delayed delivery. Reject any purchase that works only in the most optimistic case.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using TH/s alone: compare J/TH and daily kWh first.
- Mixing assumptions: use the same tariff, hashprice, uptime, fees, and accounting treatment across models.
- Treating a calculator payback as a promise: label it a scenario output and show sensitivity cases.
- Ignoring cooling: add every auxiliary load not included in the ASIC’s wall-power measurement.
- Comparing a delivered machine with a bare listing: include shipping, duties, power supplies, installation, and required hydro hardware.
- Calling a catalogue rating a measured result: identify the source and operating point, then validate with wall-meter data when possible.
- Assuming availability: verify current inventory, delivery date, warranty, and regional electrical requirements immediately before payment.
How to choose an efficiency target
Start with the tariff and facility, then select the best J/TH that can be delivered and cooled at an acceptable capital cost. If your electricity is near the 4–5 cents/kWh range modeled for 25–30 J/TH machines by Hashrate Index, a 9.5 J/TH unit may offer a large energy margin, but only if its purchase premium and hydro requirements do not consume that margin. Conversely, a less efficient machine can remain viable at a very low tariff when its capital cost is substantially lower.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe defensible comparison is therefore: net dollars per day after all recurring costs, divided by delivered dollars invested, under several hashprice and uptime cases. J/TH identifies the energy leader; the complete cash-flow model identifies whether that leader can actually pay for itself at your site.
