For most investors, a bitcoin or ether exchange-traded product (ETP) is the simpler way to obtain price exposure; buying the coins directly is the only route that gives you control of the assets and on-chain utility. An ETP is a security in a brokerage account, not the same thing as owning spendable BTC or ETH. Direct ownership can support transfers, staking or other blockchain uses, but it makes you responsible for wallets, keys, network fees and counterparty risk. Neither choice eliminates crypto-market volatility.

What you are buying in each route

Bitcoin and ether ETFs are securities that track crypto prices

In everyday conversation, “bitcoin ETF” and “ether ETF” usually refer to a spot exchange-traded product (ETP). The share is a security listed on an exchange. Its objective is generally to reflect the price of bitcoin (BTC) or ether (ETH), less expenses and the effects of trading. You buy and sell shares through a brokerage during exchange trading hours, just as you would other listed securities.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the listing and trading of a number of spot bitcoin ETP shares on January 10, 2024. Spot ether ETP listings followed in 2024. On July 29, 2025, the SEC permitted in-kind creations and redemptions for crypto ETPs, a change to the way authorized participants can deliver or receive the underlying assets when creating or redeeming large blocks of shares. Those dates describe U.S. regulatory events; availability, account eligibility and product terms still vary by broker and issuer.

An ETP share does not give you a withdrawal right to the fund’s bitcoin or ether. You own the share and its contractual economic exposure. The product’s sponsor, custodian, administrators and index methodology determine how that exposure is maintained and valued.

Direct ownership means holding the digital asset

With direct buying, you acquire BTC or ETH through an exchange or another acquisition venue and keep it with a hosted custodian or in a wallet you control. A hosted wallet leaves key management with the service. A self-custody wallet puts the private keys—and therefore the ability to authorize transactions—in your hands.

Direct holdings can be sent to another address, used in supported on-chain applications, or transferred to a different custodian. Those capabilities come with responsibilities: selecting the correct network and address, securing backups, paying network fees, and recovering from mistakes without a central institution that can reverse a transaction.

Where it is held Brokerage account as a listed security Exchange account, hosted wallet or self-custody wallet
Trading availability Intraday exchange hours; prices can move when the exchange is closed Crypto venues generally operate continuously; execution and liquidity depend on venue
Control of coins No ability to withdraw the fund’s underlying coins On-chain transfer and self-custody are possible when supported

Main custody exposure Issuer, custodian, index, valuation, tracking and share-liquidity risks Exchange insolvency, withdrawal halts, hacking, malware, lost keys and transaction errors

How ETP access works

Opening and funding the brokerage position

  1. Confirm that your brokerage offers the specific U.S.-listed bitcoin or ether ETP and that your account type is eligible.
  2. Review the prospectus for the fund’s objective, expense ratio, custody arrangements, index, creation and redemption process, and risk disclosures.
  3. Fund the brokerage account, search the exact ticker, and place a limit or market order during exchange hours. A limit order specifies the maximum price you will pay or minimum price you will accept; a market order prioritizes execution but can receive a less favorable price in a fast market.
  4. Check the executed price, quantity, commission (if any), and the displayed bid-ask spread. Retain the trade confirmation for basis records.

Shares can trade at a premium or discount to the value of the underlying holdings. Authorized participants and arbitrage normally help keep the market price near net asset value (NAV), but they do not guarantee an exact match at every moment. The share price can also respond to exchange-hours liquidity while crypto markets continue trading around the clock.

What you cannot do with an ETP

  • You cannot request a withdrawal of the fund’s BTC or ETH to your personal address.
  • You cannot use the share itself to pay a merchant or interact with a blockchain application.
  • You cannot choose the fund’s custodian, index calculation or security controls; those are product-governance decisions.

How direct buying and custody works

Using an exchange or hosted wallet

  1. Choose a regulated, available venue and read its fee schedule, withdrawal limits, supported networks and insolvency disclosures.
  2. Complete identity and security setup, including a unique password and multifactor authentication. Prefer an authenticator app or hardware security key over SMS where the venue supports it.
  3. Place a purchase order and verify whether the quote includes a spread, a separate commission, or both.
  4. Decide whether to leave the coins with the venue or withdraw them. Before withdrawing, confirm the destination address character by character and select the matching network; an incompatible network can make funds inaccessible.
  5. For self-custody, create an offline backup of the recovery phrase, keep it away from cameras and cloud storage, and test a small transfer before moving a larger balance.

Self-custody is control plus operational risk

A private key authorizes transactions. Anyone who obtains it can generally move the assets, while losing it can make the assets permanently inaccessible. Malware, phishing, counterfeit wallet software, malicious browser extensions and social-engineering attacks are common failure modes. A hardware wallet can isolate keys from an internet-connected computer, but it does not protect you from approving a fraudulent transaction or losing the recovery phrase.

Every transfer requires a blockchain network fee, often called gas on networks that use that term. Fees vary with congestion and are separate from an exchange’s withdrawal charge. A transfer is normally irreversible after confirmation, so start with a small test amount and keep records of the address, network, timestamp and transaction identifier.

Fees: compare the complete transaction cost

ETP cost stack

The ongoing ETP cost is its annual operating expense ratio. The fund deducts expenses from assets, so the effect appears gradually through a lower NAV rather than as a bill you pay separately. You also face the bid-ask spread, any brokerage commission, and the price impact of your order. A fund can underperform the reference price because of these expenses, trading frictions, cash balances and tracking differences.

One filed example illustrates why a single headline number is not a market average: the 2025 prospectus for the ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Equal Weight ETF reported “Total Annual Fund Operating Expenses Before Fee Waivers and Expense Reimbursements” of 1.03%. Waivers and reimbursements can change the amount actually borne by shareholders, and expense ratios differ by issuer, product and date. Read the current prospectus rather than applying 1.03% to every crypto ETP.

Direct-buying cost stack

Direct purchases can include the venue’s quoted spread, a commission, a deposit or withdrawal charge, and the blockchain network fee when you move the asset. A hosted custodian may charge for custody or impose minimums and limits. A low commission does not necessarily mean a low total cost if the quoted spread is wide; compare the all-in amount you pay with the market value you receive.

Cost question ETP Direct asset
Recurring charge Annual expense ratio deducted from fund assets No universal fund expense; custody or service charges depend on venue and wallet
At purchase or sale Bid-ask spread plus any brokerage commission Exchange spread plus commission, if charged
Moving the asset Not applicable: shares transfer through the brokerage system Withdrawal charge and blockchain network fee may both apply
Hidden performance drag Tracking difference, cash handling and NAV-versus-market-price deviations Slippage, network congestion and execution quality

Risk differences

Risks specific to an ETP

The SEC says crypto-asset ETP disclosures may need to address limited rights of holders, insurance, valuation, liquidity, technology, cybersecurity, legal, regulatory and tax risks. You rely on the sponsor’s governance, the custodian’s controls, the index provider’s methodology and the market’s ability to make a liquid two-sided market in the shares.

Tracking risk means the share may not match the spot price you see on a crypto venue. A wide spread or thin order book can raise the cost of entering or exiting. The fund can also be affected by changes in regulation, custody arrangements, accounting treatment or the eligibility of an underlying asset.

Risks specific to direct holdings

The SEC’s investor alert warns that the risk of loss for individuals participating in crypto-asset transactions, including crypto-asset securities, remains significant. Direct holders face hacking, malware, phishing, exchange failure, withdrawal halts and insolvency. If a crypto entity fails, customers may not recover their assets. Deposit-style protections such as FDIC or SIPC insurance should not be assumed for crypto assets held directly.

Self-custody removes dependence on an exchange for withdrawals but transfers the failure points to you. A lost recovery phrase, a compromised device, a wrong address or a mistaken network selection can be as damaging as a failed intermediary. Hosted custody is easier operationally but leaves you exposed to the custodian’s solvency, security and withdrawal policies.

Volatility is common to both

The SEC’s 2024 investor bulletin specifically tells investors to consider the volatility of bitcoin and ether. An ETP wrapper does not make either asset a stable investment. A direct coin can trade continuously while an ETP share trades only during exchange hours, so overnight crypto moves may appear as a gap in the next session’s opening price. Position size, time horizon and the ability to tolerate a large loss matter more than the wrapper.

IRA and other account access

ETPs in retirement accounts

A listed ETP can generally be purchased in an IRA or other brokerage account when the custodian offers the security and the account’s rules permit it. Contributions, distributions, fees and tax treatment follow the specific retirement account rules. Confirm the ticker, share class and transaction permissions with the custodian; availability is not universal.

Direct BTC or ETH in an IRA

Direct crypto in a retirement arrangement requires a structure and custodian that specifically support digital assets. Fees, trading windows, withdrawal rules, permissible transactions and tax reporting can differ sharply from a conventional brokerage IRA. Do not transfer coins to a personal wallet or a non-approved address without confirming that the arrangement allows it; a prohibited transaction can create tax consequences. Obtain advice from a qualified tax professional for your circumstances.

Tax treatment and recordkeeping in the United States

Digital assets are property

The IRS treats digital assets as property. Selling or exchanging BTC or ETH generally creates a capital gain or loss measured in U.S. dollars. The taxable amount depends on proceeds, adjusted basis and holding period. Transaction costs can include gas fees, transfer taxes and commissions; retain records showing how each cost was treated.

Moving coins between wallets you own is not automatically a sale, but a disposal, swap, payment, reward or other transaction can be taxable. Keep the date, quantity, dollar value, wallet or venue, transaction identifier, fees and basis for every movement. Do not assume that an exchange’s statement captures activity in another wallet.

Broker reporting does not remove your responsibility

Under the IRS Form 1099-DA framework, broker reporting for covered digital-asset dispositions begins with transactions on or after January 1, 2025. Broker forms can make ETP share records easier to reconcile, but product-specific reporting and basis rules still apply. You remain responsible for checking the form against confirmations and reporting gains or losses accurately. The IRS states that gains or losses from digital-asset sales should be reported on a federal income-tax return in U.S. dollars.

Market mechanics and liquidity

Exchange hours versus continuous crypto markets

ETP shares trade on a securities exchange during its regular session, with possible pre-market or after-hours access depending on the broker. The underlying crypto market generally runs continuously. If BTC or ETH moves sharply on a weekend or overnight, the ETP cannot print a new exchange price until its market opens, and the opening spread can be unusually wide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NAV, premiums and discounts

NAV is the value of the fund’s assets per share according to its valuation process. The traded share price can be above or below NAV because buyers and sellers are not perfectly balanced. Creation and redemption mechanisms, including the in-kind process permitted by the SEC on July 29, 2025, are designed to support arbitrage, but they do not eliminate intraday deviations or execution costs.

Direct-venue execution

Crypto exchanges differ in order-book depth, available pairs, settlement practices and withdrawal policies. A displayed price may not be available for your entire order. Use limit orders when controlling execution matters, examine the full fee schedule, and avoid assuming that a quoted price on one venue is immediately transferable to another after fees and network delays.

Which route fits which investor?

Choose an ETP when convenience is the priority

  • You already use a brokerage and want security-based price exposure without learning wallet operations.
  • You value consolidated statements and potentially simpler basis tracking.
  • You need a listed security for an eligible IRA or another account that does not support direct coins.
  • You accept an expense ratio, trading spread, sponsor and custodian risk, and the inability to use the underlying asset.

Choose direct ownership when control or utility is essential

  • You need to transfer BTC or ETH on-chain, use a supported application, or hold keys yourself.
  • You can maintain secure backups, verify addresses and networks, and monitor a custodian’s withdrawal and security policies.
  • You understand that operational mistakes and insolvency risk can lead to permanent loss.
  • You are prepared to maintain detailed tax records across venues and wallets.

Use a split approach only for a clear reason

Some investors keep investment exposure in a brokerage ETP and a separate amount of direct crypto for a specific on-chain purpose. Treat these as two different risk systems, not interchangeable copies. Set separate position limits, document which account serves which purpose, and do not move funds merely to chase a small fee difference without calculating withdrawal, network and tax effects.

A decision checklist before you buy

  1. Define the objective: price exposure, on-chain use, transferability, or a retirement-account position.
  2. Set a loss limit: crypto prices can fall sharply; decide the maximum portfolio percentage before placing an order.
  3. Compare all-in costs: include the ETP expense ratio and spread, or the exchange spread, commission, withdrawal charge and network fee.
  4. Check access: verify U.S. account eligibility, trading hours, minimums, withdrawal limits and supported networks.
  5. Read custody terms: identify who controls keys, what insurance is actually provided, and what happens during a halt or insolvency.
  6. Plan taxes: choose a recordkeeping method before the first transaction and save confirmations, wallet data and dollar valuations.
  7. Test operations: for direct ownership, practice a small withdrawal and recovery process before committing a larger balance.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Calling an ETP “owning bitcoin” or “owning ether”

That wording confuses security exposure with possession of a transferable digital asset. Describe the ETP as price exposure through shares; reserve ownership language for the asset held through a custodian or wallet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing only the advertised fee

An ETP with a low expense ratio can still be expensive to trade in a wide spread. A “commission-free” exchange can recover revenue through its quote. Compare the amount debited with the quantity received, then include any later withdrawal and network costs.

Sending a token on the wrong network

Before a withdrawal, match the destination wallet’s supported asset and network exactly. Send a small test amount, wait for confirmation, and retain the transaction identifier. Never rely on a copied address without checking the first and last characters on a trusted screen.

Assuming a tax form is complete

Broker and exchange reports may omit transfers, self-custody activity, staking or transactions on another venue. Reconcile forms with your own ledger and preserve records in dollar terms.

Confusing access with protection

A familiar brokerage interface does not remove market, product, regulatory or custodian risk. An exchange account does not provide a guarantee that customers will recover assets after a failure. Read the applicable agreements instead of inferring protection from the app’s branding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

A bitcoin or ether ETP is usually the most convenient choice for a U.S. investor who wants regulated brokerage access, intraday trading and simpler account administration, and who accepts an expense ratio and security-level risks. Direct BTC or ETH is the appropriate tool when you need transferable coins, self-custody or on-chain utility, provided you can manage keys, backups, fees, security and taxes. Compare the complete cost and failure modes, not just the label “ETF” or a single advertised fee, and remember that both routes retain the underlying volatility of bitcoin and ether.
