BirdNET can suggest bird species from audio without an internet connection after its on-device model is installed. Gemma has a separate job in the Trail Notebook workflow: helping turn outing details into journal prose. Treat the identification as a candidate, keep your own observations distinct from generated text, and do not assume every project detail or optional app feature works offline.

What BirdNET and Gemma each do

The Trail Notebook project is described in an indexed GitHub result as a laptop workflow that uses local open-weight models: BirdNET for acoustic identification and Gemma for journal writing. The project description says identification continues if Ollama is unavailable, while the journal note is skipped. The repository page itself could not be opened, so its current setup instructions, operating-system support, model versions, dependencies, and maintenance status are not independently confirmed. See the indexed Trail Notebook project description.

The useful distinction is between evidence and narration. BirdNET analyzes sound and offers possible species; Gemma can help write about the outing. A language model-generated paragraph should not be treated as confirmation of a species, and it should not blur a model suggestion into something you personally saw or heard.

Can I identify birds offline?

Yes, with BirdNET Live, species inference runs on the device using its ONNX model; its FAQ says an internet connection is not required for inference. This applies to BirdNET Live’s documented on-device identification, not automatically to every BirdNET product or to an unverified Trail Notebook installation. Install and configure the relevant app or models before leaving a reliable connection. BirdNET Live FAQ.

BirdNET Live documents live identification, field survey modes, analysis of audio files, session review, and export. Its workflow is to record, analyze, review ranked suggestions and confidence scores, then optionally contribute observations. The Cornell BirdNET app page describes a different interaction: record a short sample and receive ranked suggestions. These are distinct documented workflows, not evidence of a head-to-head accuracy difference. BirdNET Live documentation and Cornell BirdNET app page.

What still may use the internet?

Offline inference and optional connected features are separate. BirdNET Live’s privacy policy, updated August 6, 2026, says audio analysis and species identification happen entirely on-device and audio is not transmitted to external servers. On a fresh install, map tiles, place-name lookup (reverse geocoding), and weather snapshots are optional and disabled by default. If enabled, the corresponding requests send information needed for those services to third-party providers. Review the app’s settings and policy if you want to use it with networking disabled or limit location-related requests. BirdNET Live privacy policy.

Those statements describe BirdNET Live, not the Trail Notebook project or every way of running Gemma. The indexed project description characterizes its models as local, but the repository could not be inspected to verify its network behavior. Local model inference can keep audio and prompts on the device, but check each tool’s settings and behavior rather than assuming that every component is offline.

How to use the workflow in the field

  1. Prepare before the outing. Install the application and models you intend to use, and confirm that identification works without a network connection. The Trail Notebook result does not establish specific installation commands or requirements, so use the project’s own current instructions if available rather than relying on guessed setup steps.
  2. Capture useful audio. BirdNET Live’s app guidance recommends getting closer to the singing bird when possible, holding the device steady, and reducing traffic and other background noise. Do not disturb wildlife or enter restricted areas to improve a recording.
  3. Review candidates, not just labels. Examine the ranked suggestions and confidence scores in the identification workflow. Note what you heard yourself—such as call pattern, direction, habitat, and time—separately from what the model proposed.
  4. Write the journal note separately. Use Gemma, if available in the Trail Notebook setup, to help organize outing details into prose. Check the draft against your own notes; keep uncertain identifications explicitly tentative. If Gemma or Ollama is unavailable, the indexed project description says the note can be skipped while identification continues.
  5. Save or export your records. BirdNET Live supports session review and export. For the Trail Notebook project, the indexed description does not establish its saving or export behavior, so confirm where its outputs are stored before relying on it as your only field record.

How reliable is an identification?

A model output is a candidate identification, not proof. BirdNET Live says accuracy depends on recording quality, distance, background noise, and the species involved. Its FAQ describes detections above 70% confidence as generally reliable guidance, not a universal accuracy guarantee. It specifically advises visually verifying rare-species detections. • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Keep three kinds of information legible in your journal: your direct observations, BirdNET’s suggestion and confidence, and any prose Gemma generated. This makes it possible to revisit a record later without mistaking model-generated wording for field evidence.

Can I analyze recordings I already have?

BirdNET Live documents file analysis as well as live identification, so existing audio can be part of the workflow. The available documentation cited here does not establish a complete list of supported formats or Trail Notebook’s file-analysis behavior; check the current app documentation for format and import details before preparing a batch of recordings.

What does the species-coverage figure mean?

BirdNET Live’s FAQ states that BirdNET+ V3.0 covers 9,789 species, including birds, amphibians, mammals, and insects, citing BirdNET-Team (2026). That is the stated coverage for that model version in BirdNET Live; it should not be read as the coverage of every BirdNET application, version, or Trail Notebook setup. Coverage also does not mean every listed species can be identified reliably in every recording.

Plan for battery and a paper trail

Continuous neural-network inference can put a noticeable load on a phone during long outings. A portable power bank is a reasonable optional accessory, but the appropriate choice depends on your device and session; no specific capacity is established here. If you want an independent record, you can also jot observations on paper, but a paper notebook is not a requirement of the software workflow.
