Bird Construction (TSX: BDT) and Aecon Group (TSX: ARE) offer different ways to invest in Canadian infrastructure. Bird is the smaller construction-and-maintenance platform, with a higher 2025 adjusted EBITDA margin and substantial recurring master-service-agreement work in its pending backlog. Aecon is the larger, more diversified company, combining construction with concessions and major exposure to nuclear power, utilities, transit and civil infrastructure.

Neither is a universal winner. Bird is more relevant to an investor prioritizing margins, self-perform capabilities and recurring work; Aecon is more relevant to an investor prioritizing scale, a larger contracted backlog and exposure to complex national infrastructure programs. The comparison below uses reported 2025 results and declared 2026 dividends, not a price target.

What Bird Construction and Aecon actually do

Bird Construction: construction, maintenance and self-perform work

Bird Construction is a Canadian construction and maintenance company serving industrial, buildings and infrastructure markets. Its capabilities include self-perform work, where the company carries out more of the construction activity with its own crews and equipment rather than relying entirely on subcontractors. That model can support schedule control and margin capture, although it also leaves Bird responsible for labour, equipment and execution costs.

Bird’s 2025 construction revenue was C$3.3968 billion. Its operations span industrial facilities, commercial and institutional buildings, infrastructure renewal and maintenance. The acquisition of FRPD added marine and foundation capabilities and was financed with a new term loan, so the transaction expanded the operating platform while also increasing financing obligations.

Aecon: construction plus concessions

Aecon operates a larger platform that combines its Construction segment with Concessions. Its project mix includes nuclear and other power work, utilities, civil infrastructure, transportation and transit. Concessions add exposure to infrastructure assets and long-term arrangements rather than only one-time construction contracts.

Aecon reported that 2025 included growth as a nuclear and power company, expansion in United States and international markets, and substantial completion of legacy projects including two modern light-rail transit systems. That breadth gives shareholders access to project categories that Bird does not pursue at the same scale, but it also exposes Aecon to the execution risk of very large, technically complex programs.

2025 side-by-side snapshot

The headline figures show why the two stocks appeal to different investors. Aecon was materially larger by revenue, new awards and contracted backlog. Bird generated the higher adjusted EBITDA margin and reported higher net income attributable to shareholders, although Bird’s result was affected by a significant receivables and contract-asset impairment.

Measure Bird Construction (TSX: BDT) Aecon Group (TSX: ARE)
2025 revenue measure C$3.3968 billion construction revenue C$5.435 billion total revenue, up 28% year over year
2025 adjusted EBITDA C$222.1 million C$234.6 million
Adjusted EBITDA margin 6.5% 4.3%
2025 profit attributable to shareholders Net income of C$47.4 million C$15.2 million
Year-end contracted backlog C$5.1 billion C$10.714 billion
Additional backlog information Pending backlog above C$6.0 billion, including more than C$1.5 billion of recurring-revenue contracts 2025 new contract awards of C$9.487 billion
Declared dividend discussed here C$0.07 monthly for March and April 2026 C$0.1925 per share quarterly
Principal disclosed issue C$62.2 million impairment tied to one customer’s creditworthiness; new term loan for FRPD acquisition Legacy fixed-price project losses and complex megaproject execution

These are not perfectly identical measures. Bird’s revenue figure is identified as construction revenue, while Aecon’s figure is total revenue. Backlog definitions also differ: Bird separates contracted backlog from pending backlog, whereas Aecon’s C$10.714 billion figure is reported year-end backlog. A direct comparison should therefore preserve those labels instead of treating every dollar as equally certain.

Scale, backlog and visibility

Aecon has the larger contracted base

Aecon ended 2025 with C$10.714 billion of backlog, roughly twice Bird’s C$5.1 billion contracted backlog. It also reported C$9.487 billion of new contract awards during 2025. A large contracted base can provide more revenue visibility and spread corporate overhead across more projects. It does not eliminate risk: the timing of work, cost-to-complete estimates, change orders and cash collection still determine whether backlog becomes profitable revenue.

Bird adds a recurring-work angle

Bird reported pending backlog above C$6.0 billion. More than C$1.5 billion of that pending amount consisted of recurring-revenue contracts, primarily multi-year master service agreements, maintenance arrangements and task-order work. These arrangements can create a steadier stream of activity than a single fixed-price project because the customer relationship and service need extend over several years.

Pending backlog is awarded work that has not yet been included in Bird’s contracted backlog measure. It should not be counted as equivalent to the C$5.1 billion that Bird identifies as contracted. Conversion depends on contract finalization, customer authorization, timing and other conditions. For an investor, the useful question is how much of the pending amount becomes contracted backlog and revenue, and over what period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What backlog can and cannot tell you

  • It can indicate future workload: A higher contracted backlog relative to current revenue may support multi-year planning and capacity utilization.
  • It cannot guarantee margin: A project can be busy but unprofitable if labour, materials, financing or subcontractor costs rise.
  • It is sensitive to timing: Infrastructure and industrial projects can move between periods when permits, design approvals or customer funding change.
  • Definitions matter: Keep Bird’s contracted and pending categories separate, and confirm whether Aecon’s reported backlog includes the same types of commitments when reading later filings.

Margins and earnings quality

Bird’s 2025 margin advantage

Bird’s 2025 adjusted EBITDA was C$222.1 million on the reported construction revenue base, producing a 6.5% adjusted EBITDA margin. Aecon generated slightly more adjusted EBITDA in dollars, C$234.6 million, but its 4.3% margin was lower. The gap suggests Bird converted a larger share of its reported revenue into adjusted operating cash-profit before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and specified adjustments.

Adjusted EBITDA is a management-defined, non-IFRS measure. It is useful for comparing operating performance, but it is not net income, operating cash flow or free cash flow. It excludes items that may still require cash, and definitions can differ between companies. Read the reconciliation in each company’s filing before treating the margins as directly interchangeable.

Net income tells a different story

Bird reported 2025 net income of C$47.4 million. That result was reduced by a disclosed C$62.2 million impairment on receivables and contract assets connected to one customer’s creditworthiness. The charge highlights a risk that an attractive project margin cannot solve: a contractor may record revenue and profit expectations but still face a loss if a customer cannot pay.

Aecon reported C$15.2 million of profit attributable to shareholders in 2025. That was a sharp improvement from the C$59.5 million loss attributable to shareholders recorded in its 2024 annual report. The recovery indicates that earnings improved as projects progressed and legacy problems were addressed, but the comparison also shows how volatile reported profit can be for a company carrying large, complex projects.

Questions to ask beyond the margin percentage

  1. Check whether adjusted EBITDA growth is accompanied by operating cash flow and cash collection.
  2. Read notes on contract assets, receivables, provisions and impairments for evidence of customer or project stress.
  3. Compare current-period profit with prior-year profit after unusual charges, not only with adjusted EBITDA.
  4. Track whether backlog is being converted at the margin management previously indicated, rather than assuming every backlog dollar has the same economics.

Business mix and strategic exposure

Why an investor might prefer Aecon’s mix

Aecon’s nuclear, power, utilities, transit and civil-infrastructure exposure aligns it with long-duration public and private capital programs. Concessions can add an investment and operating dimension beyond construction contracts. Its scale also supports participation in projects that require substantial bonding capacity, engineering resources and specialized management.

The trade-off is concentration in high-value, technically demanding programs. A delay, design change, labour shortage or cost overrun on a major fixed-price project can have an outsized effect. Aecon’s prior disclosures about legacy fixed-price project losses make contract selection and execution discipline central to the investment case.

Why an investor might prefer Bird’s mix

Bird combines industrial, buildings, infrastructure, maintenance and self-perform capabilities. Its recurring master-service-agreement and task-order work can produce repeat business with established customers, while FRPD broadens the platform into marine and foundation work. The company has also pointed to opportunities tied to energy projects such as liquefied natural gas and nuclear, as well as infrastructure renewal in defence, healthcare, transportation and trade.

Bird is not insulated from large-project risk. The customer-credit impairment, the timing of project awards and the integration and financing of the FRPD acquisition all matter. Its smaller scale can make an individual customer, project or acquisition more material to group results than the same event would be for Aecon.

Principal risks for each stock

Bird-specific risks

  • Customer credit: The C$62.2 million impairment demonstrates that a customer’s financial condition can affect receivables and contract assets.
  • Pending-backlog conversion: More than C$6.0 billion of pending backlog is not the same as contracted backlog. Delays or cancellations would reduce the expected visibility.
  • Acquisition leverage: FRPD was financed with a new term loan. Interest, repayment and integration performance should be monitored alongside the strategic benefits.
  • Project and customer concentration: Bird’s smaller revenue base means a single troubled project or customer can have a larger percentage impact.
  • Timing: Industrial, infrastructure and maintenance work can shift between quarters as customers release task orders and approvals.

Aecon-specific risks

  • Legacy fixed-price exposure: Aecon has described ongoing exposure to losses from legacy fixed-price projects. Fixed-price contracts can compress margins when actual costs exceed estimates.
  • Megaproject execution: Nuclear, transit and civil projects involve long schedules, multiple stakeholders, stringent specifications and substantial change-management requirements.
  • Concessions and capital commitments: Concession assets can require capital and produce returns over long periods, making assumptions about traffic, regulation, financing and operations important.
  • Profit volatility: The move from a C$59.5 million attributable loss in 2024 to C$15.2 million of attributable profit in 2025 shows how project outcomes can move reported earnings.
  • International and U.S. expansion: Growth outside Canada adds market opportunity but also introduces jurisdictional, currency and execution considerations.

How to research or buy BDT and ARE without relying on a headline

Both securities trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under BDT and ARE. A disciplined process separates the business decision from the transaction decision.

  1. Confirm the ticker and security: Check that the quote is the common share on the Toronto Stock Exchange and that you are not viewing a derivative, foreign listing or stale quote.
  2. Read the latest annual and interim filings: Start with the income statement, cash-flow statement, debt notes, contract-asset and receivable notes, and the backlog discussion in management’s report.
  3. Reconcile adjusted measures: Record the company’s definition of adjusted EBITDA and list every adjustment before comparing Bird’s 6.5% margin with Aecon’s 4.3%.
  4. Separate backlog categories: Keep Bird’s C$5.1 billion contracted backlog separate from its pending backlog above C$6.0 billion. For Aecon, identify what its reported backlog includes and how it is expected to convert.
  5. Stress-test cash needs: Review working-capital swings, contract assets, receivables, debt repayment, acquisition financing and bonding capacity. Construction companies can need cash before customers pay.
  6. Check dividend sustainability: Compare the declared payment with free cash flow, net debt, covenant headroom and the capital required to execute backlog.
  7. Set a position size: Decide how much project, customer, sector and Canadian-market exposure the portfolio can tolerate before placing an order.
  8. Use a limit and review plan appropriate to your account: Transaction mechanics, tax treatment and order types vary by investor and platform. Confirm fees, currency and settlement details with the regulated service you use.

Why a valuation verdict is not included

A stock can be an excellent business and still be a poor purchase at an excessive price. A current Bird-versus-Aecon valuation requires share prices on the same date, market capitalization, cash, debt, net debt, expected earnings and analyst estimates. Those synchronized inputs are not established here, so a target price or claim that one stock will outperform would be false precision.

Once you have current figures, compare enterprise value to revenue and adjusted EBITDA, price to earnings where earnings are normalized, free-cash-flow conversion, backlog-to-revenue, net debt and dividend payout. Then test whether the multiple reflects the different risk profiles: Aecon’s scale and concessions versus Bird’s margin and recurring-work orientation.

Bottom-line suitability framework

Choose Bird when your portfolio needs a smaller Canadian contractor with a 6.5% reported 2025 adjusted EBITDA margin, self-perform and maintenance capabilities, and potential visibility from recurring master-service agreements. Treat the C$62.2 million customer-credit impairment, FRPD term loan and pending-backlog conversion as non-negotiable diligence items.

Choose Aecon when you want greater scale, a C$10.714 billion contracted backlog, nuclear, utilities, transit and civil-infrastructure exposure, and a concessions business. Treat legacy fixed-price losses, megaproject execution and the volatility demonstrated by the 2024 loss and 2025 recovery as central to the thesis.

The suitable stock is therefore the one whose risks and cash-flow pattern match your portfolio, not the company with the larger revenue number or the higher declared dividend alone.
