BioShock 2’s original release had a separate competitive multiplayer mode, not co-op through its story campaign. It put players in the role of Plasmid test subjects during Rapture’s fall, with weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. BioShock Infinite has no released multiplayer mode, and BioShock: The Collection omits BioShock 2 multiplayer entirely.
That means the version you buy matters more than the word “multiplayer” in a store description. The original BioShock 2 is the edition to investigate for the historical multiplayer mode; the remastered collection is aimed at the single-player games. If your goal is to share a story campaign with a friend, none of these releases provides the co-op experience that phrase usually implies.
The direct answer: multiplayer is not the same as co-op
“Co-op” normally means two or more people work through a campaign or shared objectives together. “Multiplayer” is broader: it can describe cooperative play, competitive matches, or another separate online mode. BioShock 2 falls into the second category. Its original release included a standalone multiplayer experience, but the official descriptions do not present it as a cooperative run through the single-player story.
The mode’s setting is connected to the series’ fiction. Players take the role of Plasmid test subjects for Sinclair Solutions while Rapture is collapsing. The publisher’s original product description says the experience is “set during the fall of Rapture,” and the release announcement describes players stepping into the shoes of Rapture citizens while learning more about that period. You can read the wording in the Steam product listing and the Take-Two/2K announcement.

There is no supported basis for calling that mode a two-player campaign, a cooperative story mode, or a way to bring a friend into BioShock 2’s single-player missions. The safest description is “a separate multiplayer experience set in the BioShock universe.” That wording tells a prospective buyer what the mode is without promising a feature the official descriptions do not establish.
What BioShock 2’s original multiplayer actually offered
A separate Rapture-set experience
The multiplayer mode was designed as its own experience rather than as an extra player slot in the campaign. Its narrative frame places participants among Sinclair Solutions’ Plasmid test subjects during the fall of Rapture. That setting explains why the mode uses familiar BioShock equipment while allowing players to inhabit roles different from the campaign protagonist.
Take-Two’s May 8, 2009 announcement described players stepping into the shoes of Rapture citizens and learning more about the city’s fall as they progressed. That is useful context: the multiplayer premise was not an unrelated modern arena, but it also was not a cooperative replay of the single-player plot. It offered another perspective on the same fictional disaster.

Weapons, Plasmids and Tonics
The original listing identifies progression and combat around the series’ three recognizable systems: weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. In practical terms, those are the categories the official description associates with the multiplayer character and advancement system. A buyer can therefore expect the mode’s identity to be built around the same broad BioShock vocabulary rather than a completely different genre.
The sources do not establish a complete list of modes, maps, player counts, unlock levels or balance rules, so those details should not be inferred from the single-player games. A store page that mentions multiplayer does not, by itself, document every rule or guarantee a particular playlist. Keep the confirmed description separate from memories of how a specific match may have played.
Why the historical mode is easy to misunderstand
Store pages and articles often use “multiplayer” as a catch-all label. A reader searching for “BioShock co-op” may therefore find BioShock 2 references and assume that the full campaign can be played with a friend. The setting and equipment are multiplayer features, but they do not change the basic distinction: the mode is separate from the story campaign.
The confusion is reinforced by the fact that the multiplayer setting is narratively connected to Rapture. “Set during the fall of Rapture” can sound like an extension of the campaign, yet it only establishes when and where the separate experience takes place. It does not say that campaign missions, checkpoints or decisions are shared between players.

What is not established
- There is no official description here of cooperative campaign missions in BioShock 2.
- There is no evidence that another player can join the single-player story as a second character.
- There is no basis for promising shared campaign progression, co-op checkpoints or story decisions.
- There is no documented claim that the remastered campaign adds a hidden or unlockable co-op option.
What the official descriptions do establish
- The original game had a distinct multiplayer experience.
- That experience was set during Rapture’s fall.
- Players acted as Plasmid test subjects associated with Sinclair Solutions.
- Weapons, Plasmids and Tonics were part of the multiplayer progression concept.
If your requirement is “play the BioShock 2 campaign from start to finish with a friend,” the original multiplayer mode does not answer that requirement. It is a different activity built around the same universe and gameplay vocabulary. If your requirement is simply to find a BioShock-branded mode involving multiple players, the original release is the relevant edition to investigate, subject to current platform support.

BioShock Infinite: no released multiplayer mode
BioShock Infinite is not a co-op alternative to BioShock 2. No multiplayer mode was released with the game. GameSpot reported creative director Ken Levine’s answer when asked whether Infinite would include multiplayer: “Nope.” Read the report at GameSpot.
Consequently, there is no in-game multiplayer menu, team campaign or versus playlist in the released version that a buyer can select. A listing for Infinite should be understood as a single-player purchase, not as a way to play BioShock with another person. Extra story content or a different edition does not change the central answer established by Levine’s statement: the released game has no multiplayer feature.
This also means that comparing BioShock 2 multiplayer with Infinite multiplayer is not a comparison of two equivalent modes. BioShock 2 had a distinct mode in its original release; Infinite has no released mode to configure, join or troubleshoot. Treating them as two versions of the same online offering leads directly to the wrong buying decision.

Original BioShock 2 versus BioShock: The Collection
The edition distinction is the most important buying detail. The original BioShock 2 and the later collection are not interchangeable when multiplayer is your priority.
| Edition or game | Multiplayer status | What the sources establish | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| BioShock 2 original release | Included a separate multiplayer experience | Players were Plasmid test subjects for Sinclair Solutions during Rapture’s fall, using weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. See the original Steam listing and Take-Two’s announcement. | Readers specifically seeking the historical BioShock 2 multiplayer mode |
| BioShock 2 remastered content | Multiplayer is not included in the collection release | The collection announcement explicitly states that multiplayer will not be included. See the 2K/Steam announcement. | Readers who want the remastered single-player experience |
| BioShock: The Collection | No BioShock 2 multiplayer | The collection packages the three games’ single-player content; 2K’s announcement says, “Multiplayer will not be included.” The 2K Store description and PlayStation Blog overview describe the collection. | Readers who want the campaigns and remastered presentation |
| BioShock Infinite | No released multiplayer | Levine’s “Nope” response, reported by GameSpot, rules out a released multiplayer mode. | Readers seeking Infinite’s single-player story |
The phrase “remastered” describes presentation and included single-player content; it should not be read as “the original game plus every original feature.” In this case, the collection announcement specifically warns that multiplayer will not be included. That explicit exclusion outweighs a generic page heading that mentions the BioShock series or all three games.
How to choose the right edition
- Decide whether you want campaign play or the historical multiplayer mode. If you want the stories, BioShock: The Collection is the relevant package. If you specifically want BioShock 2’s multiplayer, start with the original BioShock 2 listing instead.
- Check the exact product name. A page labeled “Remastered,” “Collection” or “BioShock 2 Remastered” should not be treated as the original multiplayer release. The collection announcement expressly excludes multiplayer.
- Verify the platform and edition before purchase. The original Steam product page advertises multiplayer, but a store description alone does not confirm that matchmaking is currently active on every platform.
- Read the current platform information. Look for the edition’s own online-service notes, compatibility details and user access requirements. Availability can differ by platform and time; the historical inclusion of a mode is not proof that online matches are operating today.
- Buy the collection only for its stated purpose. It is appropriate when you want the three single-player games and their remastered presentation, not when your deciding feature is BioShock 2 multiplayer.
- Save the product page for the exact version you checked. Similar names can hide major differences. Keep the platform, edition label and multiplayer wording together so that a later purchase or download does not silently switch you to the collection.
- Separate ownership from service access. Owning an edition that historically included multiplayer and being able to find a current match are different questions. Confirm both before treating the purchase as an online-play solution.
Does BioShock 2 multiplayer still work today?
The original listing confirms that multiplayer belonged to that edition, but the available source material does not verify present-day servers, matchmaking, player populations or platform-by-platform support. Those are separate, current questions.
Do not treat an “Includes multiplayer” label as a guarantee that you will find active lobbies. Before spending money for online play, check the current listing for your platform and look for a recent, platform-specific service notice. If no current information is provided, the safest conclusion is limited: the original release historically included the mode, while present availability remains unconfirmed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThis caution applies even when two listings use nearly identical cover art. A legacy release may preserve the mode in its description, while a later remaster may omit it entirely. Conversely, a platform store can continue to sell an old product without promising an active population. Ask three separate questions: Is this the original edition? Does its listing explicitly identify multiplayer? Is there current evidence that the relevant online service works on this platform?

Common questions about BioShock multiplayer
Is BioShock 2 multiplayer co-op?
Not in the campaign sense. The original game had a separate multiplayer experience set during Rapture’s fall. The official descriptions do not identify it as cooperative story play, so it should not be sold or expected as a co-op campaign.
Can two people play through BioShock 2’s story together?
The cited official material does not describe a cooperative version of the single-player story. It establishes a separate multiplayer mode, not a second-player campaign option.
Which BioShock game has multiplayer?
The original release of BioShock 2 is the game identified here as having a distinct multiplayer mode. BioShock Infinite has no released multiplayer, and BioShock: The Collection omits BioShock 2 multiplayer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does BioShock 2 Remastered include multiplayer?
No. The collection announcement says multiplayer will not be included. Treat the remastered BioShock 2 content in BioShock: The Collection as single-player content.
Can you play BioShock Infinite with a friend?
There is no released multiplayer mode in BioShock Infinite. It does not provide co-op or versus play.
Why do some pages call BioShock 2 “co-op”?
“Multiplayer” is often used loosely in search results, and readers may use “co-op” to mean any mode involving multiple people. In this case, the official descriptions support the narrower conclusion: BioShock 2’s original mode was multiplayer, but not a cooperative playthrough of the story.
Is the multiplayer included when I buy the collection?
No. 2K’s collection announcement uses the direct wording “Multiplayer will not be included.” The collection is for the three games’ single-player content and remastered presentation, not the original BioShock 2 online mode.

Is BioShock Infinite’s lack of multiplayer only a collection issue?
No. Infinite itself has no released multiplayer mode. The answer is not that a remaster removed it; there is no released co-op or versus feature to select in the game.
Can a PC mod add official co-op?
The cited official descriptions do not document a supported co-op campaign or an official modification that adds one. Do not treat an unofficial project, if encountered elsewhere, as a feature of the retail releases.

What the official announcements say
The wording matters because it prevents several common assumptions. The original Steam listing describes BioShock 2’s mode as being set during Rapture’s fall, with players assuming the role of a Plasmid test subject for Sinclair Solutions. Take-Two’s May 8, 2009 announcement says players would step into the shoes of Rapture citizens and learn more about the fall as they progressed through the experience. Both descriptions frame a separate multiplayer experience; neither describes cooperative completion of the main story.
For the collection, 2K’s announcement is direct: “Multiplayer will not be included.” That sentence is the decisive edition warning. The collection can be the right purchase for the three campaigns, but it cannot satisfy a buyer whose main reason for purchasing is BioShock 2 multiplayer.
For Infinite, the reported one-word answer from Ken Levine is equally clear: “Nope.” There is no released multiplayer feature to enable, configure or unlock. These statements answer the inclusion question; they do not answer the separate, current question of whether a legacy online service remains populated.
Buying checklist for readers comparing listings
Start with the title line, not the cover image. “BioShock 2,” “BioShock 2 Remastered” and “BioShock: The Collection” can look related while carrying different feature sets. Next, read the platform field and the edition description. A page that says the collection contains the single-player games is consistent with the multiplayer exclusion, even if the overall franchise description uses the word “multiplayer.”
Then identify what you actually need. For a campaign, prioritize the collection’s stated single-player contents. For the historical multiplayer mode, locate an original BioShock 2 listing and verify that it is not a remastered or collection package. Finally, investigate current online support separately. This sequence avoids the most expensive mistake in the comparison: buying the correct franchise but the wrong edition.
Bottom line for buyers
Use the word co-op carefully. If you mean a shared BioShock story campaign, these releases do not provide one. If you mean any multiplayer experience connected to the series, the original BioShock 2 had a separate Rapture-set mode with Plasmid test subjects, weapons, Plasmids and Tonics. That mode is absent from BioShock: The Collection, and BioShock Infinite never received released multiplayer.

Check the exact edition first, then investigate current platform support. Historical inclusion and present-day matchmaking are different claims, and the available product descriptions establish only the former. The original release is therefore the only edition to investigate for BioShock 2 multiplayer, while the collection is the straightforward choice for the campaigns and remastered presentation.
