Biomass can be converted into gasoline, but there is no single recipe. A process first turns the chosen feedstock into an intermediate—such as synthesis gas, sugars, or bio-oil—then cleans, separates, and upgrades that stream into hydrocarbon fuel or a gasoline blendstock. The feedstock and intermediate determine which steps are needed, and an intermediate or blendstock is not automatically finished, specification-compliant gasoline.
What “upgrading” means
In biomass-to-fuel production, upgrading is the conversion of a biomass-derived intermediate into fuel blendstocks or finished fuels. It can involve catalysts, biological processing, separation, and further refinery finishing. The steps vary because syngas, sugar-derived streams, and bio-oils have different compositions and require different treatment, as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) explains in its Synthesis & Upgrading overview.
That distinction matters when interpreting a process diagram or a claim about renewable gasoline. A route may produce a hydrocarbon blendstock that still needs separation or finishing; only fuel that meets the relevant gasoline specification can be treated as finished gasoline.

How the main biomass-to-gasoline routes differ
Feedstock condition is a useful first filter: dry solids, sugar-rich material, and wet biomass do not enter the same conversion process. The table compares the pathways by their intermediate and key upgrading needs; it does not rank them, because the best fit depends on the feedstock and process design.

| Route | Intermediate | Main conversion and upgrading steps | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gasification and catalytic synthesis | Syngas, primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen | Gasify biomass with heat and some oxygen; clean and condition the syngas; convert it catalytically through a synthesis step, such as methanol, into gasoline-range hydrocarbons. | Contaminants and gas composition must be addressed before synthesis. The NREL high-octane-gasoline example uses methanol as an intermediate. |
| Sugar upgrading | Sugars released from biomass | Pretreat and hydrolyze biomass to release sugars. A modeled route purifies and concentrates sugar-derived streams, then uses aqueous-phase reforming and fractionation to produce hydrocarbon fuels; biological upgrading is another possible route. | Preparation and conversion depend on the sugar stream and chosen configuration. DOE’s pathway document describes technical barriers and research needs; it is not evidence that every configuration is commercially mature. |
| Pyrolysis and bio-oil upgrading | Bio-oil made by condensing pyrolysis vapors | Heat biomass without oxygen to produce vapors, condense them into bio-oil, then stabilize and upgrade the oil, either in a standalone process or as appropriately treated refinery co-feed. | Bio-oil differs from petroleum crude, so it cannot simply be assumed to be ready for direct use as gasoline or refinery feed. |
| Hydrothermal processing | An oil produced from wet biomass | Decompose wet biomass under elevated pressure and moderate temperature, then catalytically upgrade the resulting oil as appropriate. | This route is relevant to wet feedstocks and is distinct from the dry-feed gasification and pyrolysis descriptions. |
DOE’s Thermochemical Conversion Processes, Catalytic Upgrading of Sugars to Hydrocarbons, and Synthesis & Upgrading materials describe these different process families. They should be read as pathway descriptions, not as evidence that all options have the same readiness or performance.
What happens in the gasification-to-gasoline pathway
1. Convert biomass into syngas
Gasification heats biomass at high temperature with a controlled amount of oxygen, producing syngas—primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen. This is not yet gasoline. The raw gas must be cleaned and conditioned to remove contaminants and achieve a composition suitable for the next catalytic step.

2. Make an intermediate such as methanol
In the NREL research concept described by DOE, conditioned syngas is converted to methanol. The methanol is then a feedstock for catalytic gasoline production; it is not itself gasoline.

NREL researchers studied a copper-modified beta-zeolite catalyst for converting methanol into high-octane gasoline blendstock. The example illustrates one way catalysis can upgrade a biomass-derived intermediate. It is not a universal design for biomass-to-gasoline plants.

4. Separate and finish the product
After conversion, product separation and any needed finishing determine what fuel stream is obtained and whether it is a blendstock or finished gasoline. The pathway concept and its performance figures do not establish that every output is ready for vehicle use without additional processing.
How to interpret the NREL performance figures
DOE’s September 10, 2020 account of NREL research reports the following results for the copper-modified beta-zeolite catalyst compared with an unmodified beta-zeolite benchmark in that high-octane-gasoline pathway:

| Reported figure | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 38% increase | Increase in high-octane gasoline product yield in the stated catalyst comparison. | A 38% increase at every plant, for every feedstock, or across all biomass conversion routes. |
| 35% reduction | Reduction in conversion costs reported for the same catalyst comparison and modeled pathway context. | A guaranteed cost reduction for a commercial facility or for other process designs. |
| $0.66–$0.69 per gasoline-gallon equivalent (GGE) | DOE-reported conversion-cost estimates for the high-octane-gasoline pathway. | A pump price, a current market quote, or a guarantee of plant economics. |
These are research and process-model results reported by DOE, not general commercial benchmarks. Zia Abdullah, Laboratory Program Manager at NREL, also described the pathway as a potential “bolt-on technology for existing methanol plants” using natural gas, biogas, or municipal solid waste to generate syngas. That statement concerns a possible application of the pathway; it does not mean biomass is the feedstock in every such plant.
When does the output count as gasoline?
The label depends on the finished fuel, not merely on its renewable origin or an upstream process step. DOE’s Alternative Fuels Data Center says renewable gasoline that is chemically identical to petroleum gasoline and meets ASTM D4814 can be used in existing vehicles and infrastructure. That compatibility statement applies to fuel meeting the specification—not to untreated bio-oil, syngas, or an unfinished blendstock.

For a particular process, check whether its reported product is a blendstock or finished fuel, what separation or refinery finishing remains, and whether the resulting gasoline meets the applicable specification. Those details prevent a claim about a promising intermediate from being mistaken for a claim about drop-in fuel.
What is established about commercial readiness?
The DOE materials cited here explain pathway options and describe a featured NREL research concept, but they do not establish a current inventory of operating commercial plants, their capacities, or current project-level costs. DOE’s general renewable-gasoline overview mentions commercial use of a technology, but that does not establish commercial deployment of the specific NREL copper-modified catalyst pathway. Treat the NREL figures as research-specific rather than proof of the route’s present commercial scale.
