BioDex is an Android-first plant-collector game that turns a photo into a suggested plant match and a collectible card. Its developer describes it as an offline MVP with a 4,271-species field guide. It is designed for learning and exploring—not for confirming a plant’s identity or making safety decisions.
How BioDex works
In a typical use, you photograph a plant, BioDex compares the image with its prepared plant-name data, and the app presents its closest match as a field card. You can collect cards, save progress on the device, and share a card as a PNG image through Android’s share sheet.
According to developer Jayant Jeet Tomar’s Oct. 7, 2026, description, the Android app is built with Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and CameraX. It uses ONNX Runtime to run an image encoder on the phone. The encoder produces an image vector, which the app compares with precomputed vectors for the species in its field guide.

What the 0.45 threshold means
The app selects the closest match when its cosine-similarity score meets a minimum threshold of 0.45. That number is a matching threshold, not a probability that the suggested species is correct. Tomar explicitly cautions that “the score isn’t a confidence level.” If no match reaches the threshold, the app can report that rather than return a match.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Best Gifts for Collectors & Kids】A great gift for kids aged 3–12 and adult collectors for card storage, easy to carry for school or gatherings. This is a 3-ring loose-leaf binder, not a flat integrated album; perfect for long-term collection, not recommended for flat display at card trade shows. Ideal for large trading card collections.
- 【Archival-Safe Premium Material】Crafted with waterproof PU outer shell for easy cleaning. Inner pockets are made of acid-free & PVC-free clear PP to stop card fading, bending and yellowing during long storage. Top-loading pockets hold cards snugly to prevent slipping out; the wrist strap enables easy carry for all users.
- 【Adjustable 3-Ring Structure with 40 Pages】The 3-ring design lets you freely add or remove inner pages. Equipped with 40 double-sided sheets (9 pockets per side), it holds up to 720 standard cards when fully loaded. Fully filled cards will limit ring space; frequent repeated disassembly may cause minor ring looseness under regular use.
- 【Full Zip All-Round Protection】Waterproof PU material resists dust and moisture for simple daily maintenance. The full zipper locks pages securely inside during FBA transit, preventing page bending, scratches and card loss caused by rough delivery conditions. Great for long-term card storage and daily sorting.
- 【Only for Standard Sized Cards】Perfect for all standard-size TCG, sports trading cards and mini Fuji Polaroid photos for daily collection. Pockets CANNOT fit thick top loaders, bulky sleeves or oversized cards. Display cards in photos are not included in your order.
Where identification can go wrong
The comparison is limited to plants and the 4,271 entries in BioDex’s list. If a photographed plant is absent, the system may still suggest its closest listed relative; it does not establish that a plant is outside the list. A suggested match should therefore be treated as a prompt for further learning, not a confirmed identification.
What the cards and game features add
BioDex frames plant exploration as a collection game. Tomar describes rarity-based experience points, extra XP for duplicate cards, levels, daily streaks, daily field missions, badges, and a field rank. The intended loop is to explore, make a card, and build a collection.

Common names and field notes are generated in advance with Gemma 4 E4B using Ollama, then included with the app as JSON. The developer warns that these AI-written notes can be wrong and describe a species in general, not necessarily the individual plant in the photograph. They are not a verified report about the specimen you scanned.

The developer says BioDex works without a signal, does not connect to the network, and keeps photos, cards, and progress on the device. Those are implementation claims in Tomar’s post; they have not been independently verified here.

The model is substantial. The developer reports an upstream OpenCLIP/PyTorch checkpoint of 3.94 GB and an exported FP16 ONNX image encoder of 1.26 GB. The exported model is bundled in the app assets and copied to private storage on first use, which Tomar says makes initial use slow. He estimates that a device needs about 3 GB of storage and several GB of free RAM, and says high-end Android hardware is needed.
The post does not give inference-time measurements or a device compatibility list, so it does not establish how quickly the app will run or which Android phones will work well. It also does not establish confirmed availability in an app store.

What BioDex is—and is not—for
BioDex is presented as an educational, game-like way to notice nearby flora and build a collection. It is not an independently validated plant-identification service. The project description supplies no independent accuracy benchmark, and its developer warns that both suggested matches and generated field notes can be wrong.
Do not use BioDex to decide whether a plant is edible, poisonous, or medicinal. If you need an identification for a consequential reason, consult a qualified local expert or another reliable source rather than relying on an app match.
