There is no single best material. Use geopolymer concrete when you need structural or chemically resistant concrete and can secure consistent aluminosilicate feedstocks, alkaline activators and controlled curing. Use mycelium composites mainly for insulation, interior panels and other lightweight, nonstructural elements. Use biocement—most often microbial-induced carbonate precipitation (MICP)—for targeted soil improvement, crack repair, grouting or permeability control rather than as a drop-in bulk concrete. The sound choice depends on structural demand, moisture and fire exposure, local supply, transport, process energy, service life and end-of-life options.
What the three materials actually are
These technologies reduce Portland-cement use in very different ways. Treating them as interchangeable “green concrete” products leads to bad specifications and unrealistic expectations.
| Material | Primary role | How it is made | Evidence highlighted in recent reviews | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biocement (MICP) | Ground improvement, grout, crack repair and permeability treatment | Microbial or enzymatic reactions precipitate calcium carbonate inside soil pores or cracks | Application-dependent gains; reviewed studies report up to 1.5–3.0 MPa unconfined-compressive-strength improvement in loose sands, up to 386 kPa splitting-tensile-strength restoration in cracked mortar, and permeability reductions of 3–4 orders of magnitude | Scale-up, field control, durability validation, environmental conditions and project economics |
| Geopolymer concrete | Structural and infrastructure concrete substitute | Aluminosilicate wastes or minerals react with alkaline activators to form a hardened binder | Selected formulations exceed 60 MPa compressive strength; a 2026 review reports reductions of up to 70% CO₂ in particular formulations | Activator cost and impacts, feedstock consistency, curing requirements, standards and commercialization |
| Mycelium composites | Insulation, acoustic products, panels and lightweight nonstructural parts | Fungal mycelium grows through a lignocellulosic substrate, which is then dried and formed | Reviewed values include thermal conductivity as low as 0.03 W/mK and Young’s modulus up to 3.66 GPa | Moisture, fire and durability detailing, variable properties, growth time, sterilization and drying energy, and current cost barriers |
Biocement: a treatment process, not a bag of concrete
How MICP works
In microbial-induced carbonate precipitation, selected microorganisms—or enzymes derived from them—drive reactions that form calcium carbonate. The mineral grows around soil grains, within voids, or across a crack. Depending on injection strategy and chemistry, the result can bind loose particles, fill pathways or seal a defect.

That mechanism makes MICP a targeted intervention. It does not automatically produce a castable, load-bearing replacement for reinforced concrete. A design team must specify the host material, treatment depth, injection pattern, reactant delivery, by-products and required verification tests.

Where it is useful
- Loose sands and foundations: carbonate bridges between grains can raise stiffness and shear resistance.
- Grout and void filling: precipitation can reduce connected pore space where conventional grout access is difficult.
- Crack repair: mineral growth can restore part of the tensile capacity of cracked cementitious material when the crack is reachable and remains within the treatment conditions.
- Permeability control: sealing pore channels can protect against water or contaminant migration.
A 2026 review of biocement applications reports unconfined-compressive-strength improvements of up to 1.5–3.0 MPa in loose sands, splitting-tensile-strength restoration up to 386 kPa in cracked mortar, and permeability reductions by three to four orders of magnitude. Those are application-specific outcomes, not universal design values: organism, nutrient chemistry, temperature, saturation, pore geometry, treatment uniformity and test method all matter.
What a field project must control
- Delivery: Verify that cells, enzymes and reactants reach the intended zone rather than short-circuiting through a preferential flow path.
- Uniformity: Sample or image treated regions; a strong surface crust can hide untreated material below.
- Water chemistry: pH, salinity, temperature and native groundwater can change reaction rate and mineral form.
- By-products and containment: Nutrient reactions may create dissolved compounds that need capture or dilution before discharge.
- Long-term behavior: Check wet–dry cycling, freeze–thaw exposure, chemical attack, erosion and any biological persistence required by the project.
Choose MICP when the problem is localized and a treatment can be monitored. If the project needs thousands of cubic metres of predictable, code-recognized structural material, geopolymer concrete is the more relevant comparison.
Geopolymer concrete: the structural candidate
Binder chemistry and feedstocks
Geopolymer concrete replaces or greatly reduces Portland cement with a binder made by activating aluminosilicate powders. Common precursor categories include industrial by-products and natural minerals, but the useful chemistry depends on reactive silica and alumina, particle size, impurities and moisture. Alkaline activators initiate dissolution and polymerization; their concentration, modulus and dosage strongly affect setting, strength and durability.
Because precursor chemistry varies by region and supplier, a recipe that works in one plant cannot be copied by mass ratio alone. Characterize each feedstock, then adjust activator chemistry, water content, aggregates and curing to the required performance.

Strength and durability potential
Selected formulations in a 2026 review exceed 60 MPa compressive strength, demonstrating that geopolymer concrete can reach structural-grade performance. The same review reports carbon-dioxide reductions of up to 70% for particular formulations. Both figures are formulation-specific: they do not guarantee a result for an untested local precursor or for ambient curing.
Durability must be designed rather than inferred from compressive strength. Evaluate shrinkage, creep, permeability, carbonation, chloride ingress, sulfate exposure, abrasion, fire exposure and reinforcement compatibility for the actual environment. Chemically aggressive service can be a strong use case, but only when test data represent the chosen binder and curing regime.
Curing is part of the material
Some geopolymer systems gain strength with heat curing, while others are engineered for ambient conditions. Heat may improve early strength yet add energy demand and limit field practicality. Ambient systems simplify placement but can be more sensitive to temperature, humidity and mixture proportions. The specification should state curing temperature, duration, moisture condition, strength-age requirements and acceptance tests instead of naming “geopolymer” as if it were one standardized product.

How the composite is formed
Fungal mycelium grows through a lignocellulosic substrate such as agricultural residue. Once the network binds the particles, the part is removed from growth conditions and dried or otherwise deactivated to stop biological activity. Mould geometry, substrate grading, moisture content, growth time and post-processing determine density and mechanical behavior.

Thermal and mechanical profile
A 2026 review reports thermal conductivity as low as 0.03 W/mK, which places some mycelium composites in the range expected of effective insulation. It also reports Young’s modulus up to 3.66 GPa. Modulus is not the same as structural design strength: values vary widely with density, species, substrate, orientation and test protocol, and a stiff laboratory coupon does not establish load-bearing capacity for a wall, beam or slab.
Current evidence supports mycelium for insulation boards, acoustic absorbers, packaging-like building elements, interior finishes and lightweight panels. It is not a direct replacement for reinforced or prestressed concrete in foundations, frames, retaining walls or elevated slabs.
Moisture, fire and production limits
- Moisture: untreated biological composites can absorb water, swell or lose mechanical performance. Detail them outside bulk-water exposure and specify vapor control, drainage and compatible finishes.
- Fire: test the complete assembly—core, facing, adhesive and joints—not just the dried composite. Fire resistance and reaction-to-fire classifications are project and jurisdiction specific.
- Variability: biological growth creates batch-to-batch differences in density and pore structure. Incoming inspection and statistical property limits are essential.
- Process energy: sterilizing substrate and drying finished parts can dominate impacts, especially where electricity is carbon intensive.
- Time and scale: growth cycles are longer than conventional panel pressing, and production capacity may be limited for large projects.
Which is greener? Carbon, energy and cost in context
Geopolymer results are lower on average, not automatically
A 2025 meta-analysis found average greenhouse-gas reductions versus Portland-cement concrete of 12% for low-strength mixes, 30% for normal-strength mixes and 50% for high-strength mixes. The same analysis found average production cost approximately twice that of traditional concrete. These averages combine different system boundaries, regions, precursor sources and activator recipes; they are useful benchmarks, not a quotation for a specific plant.
Alkaline activator production is a major cost and environmental driver. Transporting activators or low-reactivity precursors over long distances can erase an apparent carbon advantage. Compare delivered materials, electricity and heat, batching, curing, reinforcement, service life and disposal on the same functional basis—such as one cubic metre meeting a specified strength and exposure class.

Mycelium can look negative on paper, but processing decides
Some modeled mycelium systems show net-negative global-warming potential because the substrate stores biogenic carbon. That result depends on how biogenic carbon, land use, feedstock transport, sterilization, drying, coatings, replacement and end-of-life are counted. A low-conductivity panel can also reduce building energy use, but that operational benefit belongs in a whole-building assessment rather than in the material’s factory-gate number alone.
Biocement needs a functional comparison
MICP does not have one meaningful carbon figure because it can replace different things: deep densification, a grout treatment, a crack-repair intervention or a hydraulic barrier. Compare the complete intervention with the conventional alternative, including drilling or injection, nutrient and mineral inputs, pumping, monitoring, avoided excavation and expected maintenance. A small amount of treatment that prevents replacement of a large soil volume may perform well; a heavily pumped, chemically intensive treatment may not.
The boundary conditions that change the ranking
- Local electricity mix and fuel used for heat or drying
- Distance and mode of precursor, activator, substrate and aggregate transport
- Whether an industrial by-product receives an allocation burden or is treated as a waste input
- Functional unit and strength, insulation or permeability requirement
- Expected service life, repair frequency and replacement interval
- Recycling, reuse, biological degradation or landfill assumptions at end-of-life
A 2026 mycelium review frames construction as responsible for nearly 40% of energy-related emissions worldwide. Treat that as the review’s framing statistic, not a universal project calculation; verify the underlying inventory and boundary before using it in a business case.

A practical selection workflow
- Define the function. Write the required structural resistance, thermal resistance, permeability, crack width, fire rating, service life and exposure class. Do not begin with a material label.
- Set the functional unit. For concrete, this may be one cubic metre meeting a specified strength and durability class. For insulation, use a panel that delivers a specified thermal resistance and fire classification. For MICP, define the treated soil volume, repaired crack length or sealed flow path.
- Map local inputs. Obtain assays for aluminosilicate precursors, activator availability, fungal substrate, water chemistry and aggregate. Record delivered distance, storage requirements and seasonal variability.
- Screen process energy. Include activator manufacture, heat curing, sterilization, drying, pumping, mixing and transport. Use the local electricity and fuel mix.
- Run laboratory formulation trials. Test representative batches at the intended ages and curing conditions. Measure the properties that control design—not only compressive strength.
- Build a pilot at realistic scale. For geopolymer, place and cure a full-size element. For MICP, treat a representative soil or crack network. For mycelium, manufacture production-scale panels with actual facings and joints.
- Complete lifecycle and cost comparisons. Include maintenance, replacement, durability, monitoring and end-of-life. Report uncertainty instead of presenting one precise carbon number.
- Obtain approval before procurement. Confirm applicable building codes, material standards, fire rules, environmental permits and engineer-of-record acceptance in the project’s jurisdiction.
Implementation and quality-control checklists
For geopolymer concrete
- Qualify each precursor for reactive silica/alumina, fineness, moisture and contaminants.
- Document activator concentration, silicate modulus, dosage, water balance and admixtures.
- Specify batching order, mixing energy, placement window and temperature limits.
- State ambient or heat-curing requirements and verify internal temperature and moisture.
- Test strength at design ages plus shrinkage, permeability and the exposure-specific durability properties.
- Check reinforcement bond, dimensional tolerances, repair compatibility and field acceptance criteria.
For MICP
- Characterize grain-size distribution, permeability, groundwater chemistry and native microbiology.
- Choose microbial or enzymatic treatment with a defined delivery and containment plan.
- Stage injections to avoid preferential flow and verify treatment distribution between points.
- Monitor pH, temperature, reactant concentrations and effluent by-products.
- Use cores, strength tests, flow tests or imaging to confirm the specified improvement.
- Define a maintenance and monitoring period long enough to observe wet–dry, freeze–thaw or chemical effects relevant to the site.
For mycelium composites
- Control substrate moisture, particle size, contamination, species or strain and growth temperature.
- Record density and dimensions for every production batch; reject parts outside property limits.
- Validate drying or deactivation so growth cannot resume in service.
- Design vapor, rain, capillary and condensation control before selecting finishes.
- Test the complete wall, roof or partition assembly for fire, moisture, acoustics and fastening.
- Specify handling, repair, replacement and end-of-life routes; do not assume untreated compostability after coatings or laminates are added.
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
| Failure mode | Why it happens | Preventive action |
|---|---|---|
| Calling any low-cement mix a geopolymer | Binder chemistry and activator reactions are not defined | Specify precursor, activator and verification tests, not just a marketing term |
| Using a laboratory geopolymer recipe on site | Local feedstock moisture and chemistry differ; curing is uncontrolled | Requalify with production materials and a field curing plan |
| Assuming mycelium insulation can carry a frame | Thermal performance is confused with structural capacity | Keep it nonstructural unless a complete code pathway and tested assembly exist |
| Applying MICP as a universal concrete repair | Cracks are inaccessible, moving or contaminated, or precipitation is uneven | Diagnose crack cause, confirm access and test repaired capacity and leakage |
| Reporting one carbon percentage without boundaries | Transport, energy, allocation and service life are omitted | Publish the functional unit, geography, electricity mix, system boundary and uncertainty |
| Ignoring approval and insurance | Novel materials may lack accepted standards or documented durability | Engage the approving authority, structural engineer, fire consultant and insurer during concept design |
So which one should you choose?
Choose geopolymer concrete when the project needs a cast structural material and a qualified local supply chain can meet the curing and durability requirements. Its environmental advantage is plausible and often substantial, but alkaline activators can make it more expensive and impact-intensive than expected.

Choose mycelium composites when reducing heat flow, mass or petrochemical content in a panel or insulation assembly is the objective. Protect the material from moisture, prove fire performance at assembly level and budget for biological-process variability and drying.
Choose biocement/MICP when a targeted mineral treatment can solve a soil, crack, grout or permeability problem with less disruption than excavation or replacement. Design the delivery and verification system as carefully as the chemistry.
The longest-lasting option is not determined by the label “bio,” “geo” or “natural.” Service life follows exposure-specific design, quality control, detailing, maintenance and the ability to repair or replace the element. A conventional-looking solution with a verified local supply can outperform a theoretically lower-carbon material that requires long-distance shipping, energy-intensive processing or early replacement.
