Short answer: Bing records the search terms you submit and may also process your IP address, approximate location, cookie or similar identifiers, search date and time, browser configuration, and—when a feature requires it—text, voice, or image input. You can review or clear Bing history in Bing Settings or the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard, but deletion does not guarantee that every de-identified log or backup copy disappears immediately.
AI features need a closer distinction. Copilot Search is an AI-enhanced Bing experience and follows Bing’s core web-search data-collection description. Copilot or Copilot Chat web grounding uses a separate flow in which Microsoft derives a short query from your prompt and sends it to Bing without user and tenant identifiers. The protections documented for that generated query do not automatically apply to every consumer Bing search.
What information does Bing collect?
Microsoft Support says Bing collects the terms you enter, your IP address and location, unique identifiers in cookies, the date and time of the search, and browser configuration. These categories help deliver results, maintain security, operate the service, and understand how search features perform.
Search terms and clicked items
The query itself is the central record: words, numbers, names, or other text submitted to Bing. Microsoft’s privacy statement also describes collection of characters typed and items clicked when Bing provides search suggestions. A suggestion request can therefore involve more than the final query you submit.

Network, device, and timing information
- IP address: The address used to connect to Bing. It can provide network and approximate geographic context.
- Location: Bing may process location information associated with search activity.
- Cookie or similar identifiers: Microsoft identifies these as unique identifiers contained in cookies. They can help associate activity with a browser or device.
- Search date and time: Bing records when a search occurs.
- Browser configuration: Details about the browser environment are part of the documented collection.
These fields are listed by Microsoft as categories, not as a promise that every search always contains every field or that each field is used for the same purpose in every region or product version.
Text, voice, and image inputs
Bing services can process different input types depending on the feature. Microsoft’s privacy statement covers text that is typed or inked, voice data, and images. If you use voice-enabled Bing, voice input and performance data associated with speech functionality are sent to Microsoft so the speech feature can operate and be evaluated.
What happens after you click a result or advertisement
The website you visit is a separate recipient from Bing. When you select a result or ad and open its destination, the destination site receives ordinary browser-request information such as your IP address, browser type and language, and the hostname of the referring site. Clearing Bing history does not erase records that the destination website keeps under its own privacy policy.

Copilot Search in Bing
Microsoft describes Copilot Search as Bing’s AI-enhanced search functionality. It reviews and summarizes web search results, and Microsoft says its collection and use of personal data are consistent with Bing’s core web-search offering. In practical terms, using an AI summary inside Bing does not turn the feature into the separate Microsoft 365 Copilot web-grounding flow described below; the normal Bing categories still matter.
Copilot and Copilot Chat web grounding
When web search is enabled in Microsoft Copilot or Copilot Chat, the service parses your prompt, derives a short search query, and sends that generated query to Bing. The complete prompt is generally not sent unless the prompt is very short. Microsoft’s documentation says whole Microsoft 365 files, uploaded files, and Entra identifiers are excluded from the generated query. In some cases, document content can inform the query without the entire document being transmitted to Bing.

Microsoft says those generated queries are sent without user and tenant identifiers. Its documented commitments for this web-search feature say the queries are not used to improve Bing, create advertising profiles, track behavior, be shared with advertisers, or train generative-AI foundation models. The documentation distinguishes this query from the Copilot prompt and response, which remain within Microsoft 365 unless the customer directs otherwise.
Those commitments apply to the generated Copilot web query described in Microsoft’s Microsoft 365/Copilot documentation. They should not be generalized to all searches typed directly into Bing, to every Copilot experience, or to every piece of conversation data.
Comparison of the two data flows
| Aspect | Personal Bing or Copilot Search | Copilot or Copilot Chat web grounding |
|---|---|---|
| Input sent toward search | Search terms and feature inputs such as text, voice, or images, depending on the Bing feature | A short query derived from the Copilot prompt; the entire prompt is generally excluded unless it is very short |
| Identifiers | Bing documents collection of IP address, location, cookie or similar identifiers, date and time, and browser configuration | Generated query sent to Bing without user and tenant identifiers |
| Use commitments | Covered by Bing’s ordinary privacy and search-history terms | Microsoft documents commitments not to use the generated query for Bing improvement, advertising profiles, behavioral tracking, advertiser sharing, or foundation-model training |
| Main user controls | Bing Settings and, for signed-in personal accounts, the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard | Web-content toggle; in managed Microsoft 365 environments, an administrator policy can control availability |
| History relationship | Bing search history | Separate from Bing history, Copilot conversation history, personalization, and model-training controls |
Where your search history is stored depends on sign-in status
Signed in with a personal Microsoft account
Search terms and clicked results can be associated with the account’s Bing history. Microsoft provides two ways to manage that history: Bing Settings and the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. The dashboard is the account-level place to review and delete activity that Microsoft makes available there.
Searching while signed out
Unsigned searches are handled separately. Bing Settings can show or clear stored history associated with the device, but those searches do not appear in the account’s Privacy Dashboard. Deleting account history therefore does not remove searches made while you were signed out on a device.
Private or guest browser modes can limit what the browser saves locally, but they do not make a request invisible to Bing or to the website you open from a result. The server still receives the information needed to answer the request.

How to review and clear Bing search history
Signed-in personal account
- Open Bing and select Settings.
- Open the search-history or privacy section and review the listed searches and clicked results.
- Use the available clear or delete control to remove individual entries or the available history range.
- For account-level activity, open the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard, sign in to the same personal Microsoft account, choose the Bing/search activity area, and delete the entries shown there.
- Return to Bing Settings after deletion if you also used the service while signed out; device-associated history must be handled separately.
Microsoft’s labels can move as settings pages change. If a control is not visible, start from Bing Settings or the current Microsoft Privacy Dashboard rather than relying on an old bookmarked subpage.
Not signed in
- Open Bing Settings on the device and browser where the searches were made.
- Find the stored search-history controls for the current device.
- Review the entries and choose the clear option.
- Repeat on other devices or browser profiles where you searched while signed out; device-associated history is not one account-wide list.
What clearing does and does not do
Clearing history removes it from the account’s search-history view or the device-associated history view. It does not erase the destination website’s server logs, browser records saved outside Bing, or every copy Microsoft may retain under its privacy terms.
Retention periods and the limits of deletion
Microsoft’s current search-history guidance states that, after 18 months, it no longer uses cookies and other identifiers that can be linked to an account or device to personalize search. The same guidance says authenticated users’ data may be retained for up to five years to improve products and services, with sensitive information removed and safeguards applied first. These are policy durations, not a guarantee that every individual record remains for exactly 18 months or five years.
Microsoft says users can delete search data, including data stored longer, but limited backup copies may remain temporarily. Its privacy statement also explains that clearing Bing history does not delete information from search logs retained and de-identified as described in the statement or in dashboard instructions. “Deleted from your history view” and “immediately absent from every internal system” are therefore different outcomes.
If you need a record removed, delete it through the available control as soon as possible, then allow for backup and de-identification processes. Do not interpret the appearance of an old de-identified log as proof that the account-history deletion failed.

Managing Copilot controls separately
Bing history versus Copilot conversation history
Bing search history, Copilot conversation history, personalization, and model-training choices are separate controls. Deleting Bing searches does not delete Copilot conversations, and changing a Copilot training preference does not clear Bing’s search-history list.
Consumer Copilot training choice
Microsoft says eligible signed-in consumer Copilot users can opt out of using future conversation activity for model training. Eligibility, categories, and markets can differ; Microsoft’s Copilot FAQ lists exclusions. Treat that setting as a forward-looking conversation-activity choice, not as a retroactive deletion of Bing searches.
Web-content toggle
In Copilot experiences that expose a web-content toggle, turning web content off prevents that session from using the web-search grounding feature while it is off. It does not delete earlier Bing history or conversation history. If your organization manages the account, the toggle may be unavailable or locked by policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Controls in Microsoft 365 organizations
Administrators can use the Allow web search in Copilot policy in managed Microsoft 365 environments. When an administrator disables web search, users cannot turn the web-content toggle back on. This is an organizational control over whether Copilot can obtain web-grounded answers, not a command to erase existing Bing history.
For workplace questions, ask which account and tenant you are using before assuming that a consumer setting applies. The documented no-identifier and no-ad-profile commitments concern the generated web query in this managed Copilot flow; they do not change an organization’s own retention, audit, or security obligations for prompts and responses.

A practical privacy checklist
- Check whether you are signed in before searching. Account history and unsigned device history are managed in different places.
- Use Bing Settings to review both search terms and clicked results.
- Use the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard for personal-account activity that appears there.
- Clear device-associated history separately on browsers or devices used while signed out.
- Remember that voice and image features introduce additional input types beyond typed text.
- Review the destination site’s policy when you open a result or advertisement; that site receives normal request data.
- Keep Bing history, Copilot conversation history, personalization, model-training choices, and web-content access as separate decisions.
- In a work account, check whether an administrator controls web search in Copilot.
- After deletion, allow for temporary backups and retained de-identified logs rather than expecting instantaneous erasure everywhere.
Common privacy misunderstandings and fixes
“I deleted Bing history, so Copilot conversations are gone.”
They are separate data sets and controls. Open the Copilot history or privacy controls if your goal concerns conversations, personalization, or model training.
“I used Copilot, so every prompt was sent to Bing.”
For the documented Copilot web-grounding flow, Copilot derives a short query. The complete prompt is generally not included, and whole Microsoft 365 or uploaded files and Entra identifiers are excluded from that generated query. Copilot can still use document content to inform the query in some cases.
“The Copilot web-query commitments cover all Bing searches.”
They do not. Microsoft describes those commitments for generated queries used by the Copilot web-search feature. Direct consumer Bing searches remain subject to Bing’s ordinary collection and history terms.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“Clearing the dashboard removed every copy.”
Deletion removes data from the history view, but Microsoft says backup copies may remain temporarily and de-identified search logs may be retained. The destination website and your own browser may also have separate records.
“Private browsing means Bing cannot identify the request.”
Private browsing mainly changes local browser storage. Bing still receives the request data needed to provide results, and a clicked destination receives ordinary browser-request information.
What to expect when settings do not match an older guide
Microsoft changes labels and page layouts over time. A missing menu does not necessarily mean that history controls were removed. Start at the current Bing Settings page, then open the current Microsoft Privacy Dashboard while signed in. If an entry is absent, verify whether the search was made under a different account, a different browser profile, or while signed out. For Copilot, confirm whether you are using a consumer account or a managed Microsoft 365 account, because an administrator policy can remove the web-content control.
